RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I've used the Riverside Shakespeare as a doorstop and a stand for a lamp that wasn't high enough. You?

(Let's see the Kindle stop a door, by the way...)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I sometimes use heavy books to weigh down or flatten things, for instance if I'm gluing down a piece of paper to a backer.

message 3: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I dug the middle out of one once and hid things in it when I was younger. I cut it out so that a box would fit in the middle, it was pretty handy for hiding things.

my wife decorates with books. she likes to display my older ones stacked up here and there all antique-y looking

and at my daughters wedding there were books on all the tables in the centerpiece arrangement (done very cool and tasteful) as she is a book lover and library employee. there were over 50 tables so a lot of books

Lee (LeeTschetter) Trophies of course!

janine | 7709 comments i use books as reading trophies and decoration.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I don't have a ladder, so to reach the smoke detector to change the battery, I had to pile a couple of thick books on my wooden chair seat to be tall enough to reach that high.

I guess my books are also decor. I do love a beautiful book.

My brother did this too, and now they sell these to hide valuables in. They line the hollow with velvet.

I also press flowers in them, and store autumn leaves.

And gather dust....lots and lots of dust...

message 13: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I've got one sitting ontop of the heat register in the bedroom. It's a hard cover book on how to quilt.

message 14: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) My alarm clock is on a stack of books.

In my dictionary I have a crisp clean note of each denomination of Australian dollar notes (that isn't quite true I stopped at $20, I thought saving a $50 and $100 was a bit extravagant). The paper ones before they changed to plastic.

message 16: by Auntie (new)

Auntie Raye-Raye (fabulousraye) I use heavier books to block my bedroom door closed. My cats still manage to get in.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Fab.Raye welcome to the group. The usual welcoming committee are probably asleep at the moment so you are stuck with me. :)

Thanks Gail! I've lurked in here for a long time. I figured I should start being more social.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

I would like to lurk but I have no control, I have to jump in and say something. :)

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) If you purchased this book without a cover you should be aware that this book is stolen property. It was reported as "unsold and destroyed" to the publisher and neither the author nor the publisher has received any payment for this "stripped book."

message 22: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments In my bookstore days, management allowed each employee a certain number of "strips" each month. It was sweet.

My friend used to work at B&N and she told me they did that. I think that's cool.

Welcome, Fab and Hillary! :-)

The pulping of unsold books has always struck me as hideously destructive and disrespectful of books....almost on a par with book burning.

message 25: by Jan (new)

Jan | 241 comments That would be like bakeries throwing out Past the Sell Date pastries. I don't know individual stores' policies, but I hope they donate the leftovers to homeless shelters. Does anyone have any more information on this subject?

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Pastries or books?

They usually just throw it away because they're afraid of being sued if anyone were to get sick from it.

Some stores donate the past the sell date pastries. I eat lunch at Kent Social Services. (It's kind of like a nice soup kitchen.) They get said donations and serve them.
