(Thank you, NY Times, for writing this thread question for me...it didn't even need editing.)

Actually, check out this article...it's about candy, guilt, etc...pretty cool. What do you think?

message 2: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I think that candy is completely understood, not necessarily evil, but completely understood.

message 3: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I dated Candy for a while. Candy is a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Candy.

message 4: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments “At least candy is honest about what it is,” she said. “It has always been a processed food, eaten for pleasure, with no particular nutritional benefit.”

as honest of a line as has been written

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments As I finish my bowl of Count Chocula, I will consider this question...
I love candy, and even more than eating it, I love thinking about it. It fascinates me that you start with one ingredient - sugar - and with the addition of a few other ingredients you can make it do so many things. Hard candy, fudge, taffy, all those different textures that depend just on how long you cook it, and then the (sometimes very) small amounts of flavorings and colors you add. And it's so pretty! I love just looking at that picture of the suckers! I love having it around just because it's decorative.

But having said that, my tolerance for sugar is so high it's obscene.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I don't think candy is evil, it's just candy. As the article states, and Kevin has posted here, it doesn't represent itself as anything more than something eaten for pleasure.

I said somewhere recently that Fun Size candy IS fun! I'm not crazy about "King-Sized" candy bars, I think that overindulging is not good, and making people think they're getting "value" for their money by eating more candy is a bit evil...
Okay, I'm done. :)

Sarah | 13814 comments Candy candy candy I can't let you go
all my life you've haunted me I love you so
candy candy candy baby life is crazy

Seems like a pretty simple song to me. I don't know what the fuss is about.

What kind of moron flushes handfuls of candy corn DOWN THEIR TOILET? I think we need to revoke her PhD based on that alone.

“Candy should not be sold in huge bags at the drugstore,” said Jennifer King, a founder of Liddabit Sweets, a small candy company in Brooklyn that proudly sells candy bars — such as a recreated Snickers — for as much as $6.50.

Right. We should not make food affordable. We should make it all expensive and gourmet so that only affluent people can buy it! Affluent people who will appreciate the delicate irony of an artisanal, recreated Snickers. These people also might enjoy going to a chic restaurant and paying $30 for a deconstructed Frito.

message 9: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) I can never outrun it.

message 10: by Jan (new)

Jan | 241 comments All snack food is evil. Tonight I had potato chips with dip, a chocolate chip cookie, and a birthday cupcake. When I got home, I ate a whole 3.27 oz. bag of peanut M & M's. Now I wish I had had carrot sticks instead. The guilt is dehibilating.

message 14: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I'm addicted. What can I say?

message 15: by Jan (new)

Jan | 241 comments >>I'm addicted. What can I say?<<

That's my problem. On Biggest Loser last night, Jillian said to maintain good eating habits, lay off anything and everything that contains sugar, refined wheat products, and something else. I forgot what the third thing is. Tomorrow I start on 2/3 of a diet. I hope it helps.

message 16: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) Um, what was the middle part ?

message 17: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments Yup, I'm addicted too. I guess I had the whole diabetes thing coming when I'd scour the kitchen for anything with sugar &/or chocolate in it as a kid.

Candy is not evil in itself. The advertising companies that sport Halloween candy in August, and make up new kinds of Peeps for every major and minor holiday throughout the year, they are truly evil. I've been off sugar since May and I'm dreading these upcoming candy extravaganzas. So, I'm arming myself with stevia-sweetened pecans and greek yogurt and praying that the Halloween Candy-ghoulies pass our hosue by. ;)

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments At lunch I bought our Halloween candy. I would have left it in the car but it's actually close to eighty degrees so I brought it inside. Then I told myself I was allowed to eat one little mini Heath bar as a reward for having run errands at lunch.
I'm now in a war with my eyelids over whether my eyes should be open or closed. Eyelids are winning.

Do they still make these? I think there was a time, in the early 90s, when I ate a Skor bar every day.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I love Skor bars. Darnit, I want some candy now.

Sweet, sweet chocolate...it's been too long. How I've missed you.

I sometimes like dark chocolate, sometimes milk. I don't really eat a lot of chocolate or candy anymore.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I prefer dark chocolate. Milk chocolate is too sweet, and stickier.

Italy was fun. Rome was full of history (duh), Florence was windy and wet (darn) and Venice was absolutely beautiful. A mixed bag, but a wonderful experience for me & the Mrs. Thanks for running the vacuum when you left. :)

Dark chocolate is a chick thing. Milk chocolate is for overgrown kids.

Pat (patb37) I hate white chocolate because is is a fraud. There is no chocolate in it.
