Oh I am so sorry she didn't really enjoy herself Carmel. She obviously has her head screwed on correctly which would be thanks to you.
I hope she gets that results she is hoping for.

message 67: by Neko (new)

Neko Thanks for sharing with this with us Carmel! I had a different idea of what goes on. Maybe I am swayed by TV in this sense. It's a shame she didn't seem to overal enjoy it but at the same time it seems like it was a good learning op for her :)

Home is good! You never really notice how good it is until it is taken from you..lol

So all your 'schoolies' worries were unfounded..:) Super good luck with her results, I'm sure she will be fine, and the La Trobe uni would be great...

message 69: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I finally remembered a book I read about an experience similar to schoolies: Night of the Whale by Jerry Spinelli. I remember some of the characters felt the same way your daughter did, in that some of the kids were party-poopers, or sticks-in-the-mud, and everyone was behaving at least a little differently than they did in school, or expected to on this vacation. It might be hard to find, being old and American, but if any of you do find it I recommend it. It's short.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Cheryl. I am a few years away from schoolies. It will be good to have a few ideas of what to expect.

Well, Carmel...you enjoy your break!! Sounds like you certainly have plans to..:)

message 73: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Do any of you get real live trees, and then plant them in your yard? I heard a lot about that (here in the US) several years ago, but it didn't seem to catch on. Maybe it'd work better in your summer?

message 74: by Neko (last edited Dec 10, 2010 02:41PM) (new)

Neko @Carmel- Wow! Sounds like you'll be having a lot of fun.

I LOVE the smell of Christmas trees! If there is one thing I must have for Christmas, it is a REAL tree! Not a plastic thing that makes me feel sad and unchristmasy.

This is kinda funny story about xmas trees..
Few years ago my Dad, myself and a family friend went to cut down our own christmas tree! I got told about this place at work so I thought it sounded exciting. My workfriend didn't mention that you need to pay or where to pay. SO in the pouring rain, we stuck our trees into the car and drove off, thinking nothing different.

I got to work the following week and told my friend about the xmas tree and I mentioned 'free tree is great!' and she said 'Oh you didn't pay for it?'
To our defense there was no signs to tell you WHERE to pay for the trees so we assumed it was free...LOL Oops! We would have paid had we known. But it's just a funny story now hehehehe

We've also gotten a tree which we can plant in the backyard. It's a nasty tree and prickles you to death (very itchy). And the tree is tough as nails, it's turned yellow, been blown around, fallen over and stayed on its side for about a week when it was very windy. But it's still kicking! It's rather amazing tree if only it was better looking and not so spikey.

Mmm..So yea..Christmas trees mean a lot to me.

So hopefully this weekend I will go Tree hunting!! :D

And pay for it Laura??? haha :D

message 76: by Neko (new)

Neko Carmel wrote: "Ha ha great story Laura. We get our xmas tree through YMCA, they cost ~ $30 but the money goes to a good cause so I don't mind paying."
Great way to get a tree then :)I never thought about the YMCA selling trees.

Brenda wrote: "And pay for it Laura??? haha :D"
Lol :P Yes, I will be paying for this one.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

Sounds like a wonderful time had by both of you. It would have been me leaning on the fence opposite laughing my head off.

message 78: by Neko (new)

Neko @Carmel lol sounds like a great time! Nothin wrong with a leaning tree! ;) Hopefully it was easy enough to get lights on it?

We had our street Christmas party this weekend. It is always good to catch up with the people you wave to on a regular basis. There are always a few new faces, plenty of regulars. The kids have a ball playing soccer & cricket on the street while we sit back and relax, catching up on a years worth of gossip.

We had ours on Friday night too, Gail. It's always a lot of fun, but we always need to take the aerogard for the mozzies!! It's great to catch up with everyone, and enjoy nibbles, and a few drinks,..not far to walk home...:D

message 81: by Neko (new)

Neko ^ Or stumble home..ehehehe jk!

message 82: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

@ Laura....might have done that...:D
@ Carmel..that is really sad. Going back many years when my kids were still at primary school, we had a neighbour who was a grump, never spoke, smiled, waved or anything. One day I said to the kids, we will all wave every time we see her, and see what happens. Well, it took about 3 weeks, but she finally waved! We cheered like mad in the car..:D
So maybe, smile and wave to your scary neighbour, and see if he's just a lonely old man..but don't get too close on your own!!!

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

Just because you don't talk to one neighbour doesn't mean not having a street party. We just do a letter drop letting the whole street know it's on. We set up camp and start drinking. (It's down hill to my house from the set up position so rolling home is easy.) The first year we just crossed our fingers and hoped we weren't drinking alone. It was a combined effort between us and some friends who lived 6 houses up. The neighbour we don't get on with has never come to the street party.

message 84: by [deleted user] (new)

It is lovely. We are very lucky, but then we did choose the street deliberately.

Sounds like it's best to keep away from his sort!!! So sorry you have a neighbour like that...those of us who have good neighbours probably don't realize how bad it is for those of you who have 'bad' (for want of a better, less flattering (!) word) ones. :)

Neko Carmel wrote: "Brenda that sounds wonderful, I'm a bit envious of you having such a coridal group of neighbours, unfortunately I have a neighbour who is renting the house next door and he's not very nice, told me..."
That's a shame but I can understand being a little unnerved by a person like that. Many of the houses in our street all used to be lived in but within the past 5 years many have become renters.

One group of people who used to live across from us were constantly get drunk and yell out loud cursing towards the suburb and everyone who lived in the street. They liked to also take a pee in the garden, throw their beer bottles around, etc. It was quite unsettling considering that our neighbourhood is a good one. All the neighbours used to call the police and report their behaviour..In the end I think they got kicked out! :) They were worse than usual annoying bogans!! :(

People who've thrown parties actually have put notes in our letter box to warn us of the noise. Or they've knocked on the door, given us their mobile number incase the music gets too loud. Everyone who's done this have been in their late teens to mid 20's.

Neko Sounds like it was a reallly good time!! Great way to start the Christmas week off :)

-

Yeeeaaah, found a Chirstmas tree! Took probably an hour to find but the last place I went there it was! Bit of an adventure finding it though, I saw the aftermath of a car accident (looked really bad) and then there was a bunch of cops outside this house so all the traffic was getting dirrected away.

:s

I had to sit next to the tree while I was coming home..Was spiked to death..lol

Aparently this year the council have been getting RID of the pine trees soooo there wasn't MANY to be found at the pertrol stations :( So, it's the reason it took us ages to find ours this year.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

We have the cross over of winter and summer sports happening now which adds to the week. My daughter has signed up for school softball and is still playing club softball. Satuday mornings game is at 8.00 a local game this week (I am on canteen duty, yuck). My sons baseball game is at 8.30. Registration for the winter sports is on at various stages of the day. I have a hair appointment at 12.00noon which I AM NOT GOING TO MISS this month. :D

My Baseball game is on Sunday this week thankfully.
