Should be fun. I just listened to Rufus Fear's lecture on Lord Acton, which discussed in some detail his belief in the rightness of the Southern cause.

It's also perhaps interesting to consider whether the Declaration of Independence suggests that the South's right to secede should, under the principles of the Declaration, have been recognized as valid and legitimate.

Hope it's as fun a read as you expect!

Thanks - and happy holidays!

I can't go along with a right to secede under the Declaration, though. Whatever might be found in the declaration, it was superseded by the constitution, which - IMO - precluded any state from unilaterally opting out after ratification.

Currently having a break from Chunksters and reading The Redbreast by Jo Nesbø. It's almost a chunkster and just under 500 pages but a bit easier going that many of the others. I love a good detective thriller and this one is living up to it.

Suzanne (thysanura) I figured out how to get library books on my Kindle (so easy now!), so that's distracted me from my chunksters. I picked up Ready Player One and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks -- both great, and the waits were much shorter for the e-books than the hardcovers.

I'm hoping to catch up on my chunksters soon though!

message 257: by Andrea (new)

Andrea The only thing that is distracting right now is the number of great chunksters I have going at the same time!

Are you liking Henrietta. I just read it for my "real life" book club. We all liked it and it certainly lent itself to great discussion.

I have Ready Player One waiting to be read, and read Henrietta Lacks last year. It was quite good!

message 260: by Sera (new)

Sera RPO is excellent. I highly recommend it on audio.

I've finished our two chunksters so I'm going to dig into some other books. Both of the chunksters received 5 stars from me so that they have set the bar high for my current reads.

I thought it was excellent. Very thought-provoking and it broke my heart a thousand times. Lots of great fodder in there for a book club discussion -- that must have been interesting!

After reading the first book of Game of Thrones way ahead of the group, now I've started on the second. It is definitely distracting me from my side read but still a great Chunkster!

Oh good - I'm hoping to hit it in April.

I want to read the book and watch the first TV series before April when the new one starts!

Well, maybe I will shoot for late March. Still toying about the series, which my husband watches, because of all of the violence.

Yeah, I've heard there are quite a few very violent bits and some quite graphic sex scenes. I personally don't really mind but it's a shame if it puts people off

message 267: by Loretta (last edited Feb 26, 2012 03:44PM) (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) The GoT TV series uses "Sexposition" very, very frequently. Basically, because the books contain so much expository dialogue, the TV show thought it would "spice" things up by having someone delivering that dialogue either during sex or while others are having sex in the background.

I actually don't mind graphic sex on TV even a little (I loved Deadwood, watch True Blood, etc.) but this strikes me as SO silly, and as such a stupid way to liven up the scenes that it reduces the quality of an otherwise excellent show.

message 268: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Loretta, I'm laughing and blushing just reading your post! I may have to check this out...hahah

Same here - I just couldn't stick to the schedule since week one! I've finished the first three books in the series and am currently about 300 pages into book four, with the paperback of book five preordered for when it comes out in mid-march I think. I've been so caught up in this series that I never even picked up Middlemarch and The Moonstone :( But when I'm done with A Feast for Crows (book four) I mean to catch up on The Moonstone at least!

message 270: by Becky (new)

Becky 1) ALLERGIES. Ugh, everything I hear sounds like its echoing about in my head. Luckily I'm a bit ahead on Middlemarch so I can take a break.

2)Undaunted Courage great book so far. I love it, but it does take away from other things.

3) just started a A Feast for Crows So excited. Book 3 in the series was easily my favorite so far, and left each of the characters in such tantalizing places.

Ha ha ha - that's how my husband explained it to me, too. I told him that there's not even close to the amount of sex that happens in the book as opposed to the few episodes that I've watched of the series. He told me that the sex was scenery - I told him that that was stupid. Between that and the violence, I gave up on the show after a couple of episodes, but then loved the book, so who'll knows what I'll do :) I"ll probably end up watching it since my husband wants me to get into it with him.

message 272: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) "Sexposition" -- hahahah! That is the perfect term for it, Loretta.

I agree the sex in the HBO series came off as really juvenile. Boobs and butts at any opportunity, as if to make sure we didn't forget that it was on cable. I enjoyed it otherwise though. As I'm reading the book now, I'm so impressed by how much the scriptwriters were able to include!

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous. I mean, really, I enjoy a good sex scene on my TV. But they only work if they tell you something about the character or the character's relationship to the person they're having sex with. See e.g. the rampant sex in Deadwood I mentioned above.

In this case, they invented an entire character on the TV show (Roz, the prostitute) whose sole purpose has been to have sex with various characters who are actually important, so that they can give her their life history while mid-coitus.

Ridiculous.

I had heard from friends about a few scenes and wondered where they fit in to the story as they certainly were not in the book! Now I understand

message 275: by Loretta (last edited Feb 27, 2012 01:31PM) (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) LOL, yeah, in the first season, Roz managed to have sex with/near Theon Greyjoy, Littlefinger, Tyrion Lannister and Grandmaester Pycelle, and they each told her stories while they were going at it.

I feel like the actress must have had to sign an employment contract that stated she would be completely naked in almost every appearance on screen (seriously, she was nude for at least 80% of her screen time).

message 276: by Missy (new)

Missy (LittleMissMissy) Since I've started reading The Moonstone The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, I have also read:

Cold Summer Nights Cold Summer Nights by Sean Thomas Fisher

and

The Sinking of the Titanic The Sinking of the Titanic by Bruce Caplan

Missy (LittleMissMissy) Just read Triangles by Ellen Hopkins and LOVED it.

Loretta (lorettalucia) Reading Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov and A Dance With Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire, #5) by George R.R. Martin right now and enjoying both.

Both of these are on my TBR list. I'm currently at 90% in a storm of swords and having to really resist going and finishing it because I'm trying to revise for exams.

That is my main distraction at the moment and my textbook is a huge 1291 page chunkster! I won't nominate it for a group read though, lol

message 280: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) HA! I don't think anyone would vote for it. ;-)

What are you studying?

message 281: by [deleted user] (new)

Medicine, in my final year. Got exams coming up in 2 weeks, hence the increased use of all distracting websites!

message 282: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) LOL, I remember being really addicted to online versions of the games Risk and Scrabble during my last year or so of law school... :)

message 283: by Becky (new)

Sera Becky wrote: "There is now a Settlers of Catan for Kindle... I haven't read a book on it in weeks..."

message 285: by Becky (new)

Becky Its horribly addicting. Its as bad as the real game! Just a friendly warning :D

message 286: by Sera (new)

Sera Oh no - I have too many addictions already...

message 287: by Andrea (new)

Andrea I have couple of books going, but I'm still trying to crawl my way through Middlemarch. I have a bunch of books that I have finished as well. My goal for tonight was to get at least a few of them listed as finished with a little review. I have a million things to do and never enough time, I hate that feeling......

message 288: by Shea (new)

Shea Andrea, I too am still trying to get through Middlemarch (and The Three Musketeers). I have been left way behind by the groups. I am hoping once soccer season is done I will get more reading time.

message 289: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Hahaha, well I guess I am in good company then! I think I'm about 5 weeks behind, with a miracle I will finish with the group!

message 290: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thysanura) Not that I should fuel others' distractions, but today's Kindle Daily Deal features some chunksters, including Wizard's First Rule and An American Tragedy.

There's some other good non-chunkster stuff there, too. For $.99, how can I resist?!

Thanks, Suzanne! I just picked up the Dreiser book. It's been on my TBR for awhile.

Andrea and Shea, Thank you Thank you Thank you. I am also working on getting Middlemarch done and not doing well. I'm glad that I am not the only one still working on it. Best of luck to both of you.

message 294: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Almost finished with Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and just loving it!

message 295: by Juliette (new)

Juliette Just started The Night Circus for my "in real life" book club. It's rather interesting to read along with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

message 296: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I LOVED The Night Circus! Have fun!

message 297: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) My distraction was Breakfast at Tiffany's, but it is such a small book it didn't take long to finish. The bigger thing distracting me is a reading of The Chronicles of Narnia I found here. It's all seven books for free. I've never read the books, and I prefer Tolkien to C.S. Lewis, but I cannot resist listening to the whole series. I'm in book 4 now.

message 298: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Sadly, I still have not finished Middlemarch but I keep chipping away at it a little at a time. I've hit a slump and have not been doing much reading at all. On the other hand my gym time has increased a ton...lol

message 299: by Becky (new)

Becky Sometimes you need a break from reading, just like any other hobby. The sudden sense of obligation or duty to a hobby is terribly offputting.

message 300: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Do you listen while you workout?? That might pickup your reading...
