Who Loves Fantasy? discussion
J.K. Rowling VS. Stephenie Meyer
Ooh, this is such a hard question. I really like both of them, but for me, it would have to be J.K. Rowling. They both have great writings, and different styles, but Stephenie Meyer's books have a more straight-forward plot, whereas J.K. Rowling's are a lot more complicated, with sub-plots and such. Both authors have characters that are alive, and original plots, but I've grown up with Potter, so I think I'll stick with Potter.
Also, many people are saying that Stephenie Meyer is the "next J.K. Rowling" with Breaking Dawn coming out this summer, and the Twilight movie coming out in the winter. What are your opinions on this subject?
This is really hard!! I Love Harry Potter, and the Twilight Saga! Ugh...Harry Potter, is one of my most obsesive things! But Twilight is growing on me...I think I am going to have to go with Twilight, even thought I have known Harry longer. There is something about the Twilight series, that makes me want MORE and MORE!! So...my conclusion, Stephenie Meyer.
Teresa:I get kind of frustrated when I hear that stephenie meyer is "the next j.k. rowling". To me, honestly, J.K. rowling is a better writer. I mean I love Stephenie Meyers books. I'm obsessed. But J.K. rowling created an entire world and with the tiniest details to. She creats a thousand little creatures that without, harry potter just wouldn't be the same, she creates monsters, and people that are monsters, and spells and just this entire universe. I feel like her imagination and writing skill is so much more advanced than Stephenies. But don't get me wrong, because I still love Stephenie,(She's also Mormon so she gets kudos there) But I just don't agree with the fact that she is the next J.K. Rowling.
I agree, Jessica. Stephenie Meyer is a great writer, her books are amazing, and she has a large fan following, but she doesn't compare to J.K. Rowling.Like you said, J.K. Rowling creates a whole new world in which her books take place, and creatures and everything that makes up the series. Harry Potter is an enormous phenomenon, and I don't think that is going to change anytime soon. One of the reasons I think people say Stephenie Meyer is "the next J.K. Rowling" is because the Harry Potter series "is over" in some people's eyes, with the books out, and the Twilight series is becoming more and more popular. But a lot of J.K. Rowling's fans and Stephenie Meyer's fans are the same people.
I guess that both series are great and we really can't compare the two, because they are just so different. But I think there's only one J.K. Rowling.
Thanks Teresa... that was some really good input. I'm glad that at least someone agrees with me. You obviously aren't an Edward obsessed love struck 14 year old girl if you are agreeing with me. Thanks. hehe. But Harry Potter is no where near being over. We still have at least two movies left if not three. I'm a bit obsessed with Him right now though. Have you happened to read J.K. Rowlings other little books? They are called 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to find Them' and 'Quiditch Through the Ages'
both of which are mentioned in the books. She actually wrote them though. They are pretty interesting. And funny. But they are really tiny.
You should check them out if you like Harry Potter.
You're welcome Jessica. You're right, I'm not an over-obsessed Edward fangirl. :D Haha. And I bet other people prefer J.K. Rowling over Stephenie Meyer, too. I don't know how people think the series is over either. The books are out, and now we know what happens. Now we wonder what could happen next, instead of what will happen next. Along with the three movies (Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2) left, we still can wait for J.K. Rowling's encyclopedia, which she says she will get around to eventually, but she's not going to "start it tomorrow". But it'll be really cool if we can see all the back-stories of some of the other characters, and learn all of this information that she didn't explain in the books, even if we have to wait a few years.
Actually, yes, I have read Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I love the commentary in Fantastic Beasts from Harry and Ron. They're so funny! :)
Well, I don't think comparing the two is the best way to go. Like you've said, there's only one J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer's style is completely different. J.K. Rowling did an amazing job at creating an entire new universe just from her imagination and I loved trying to figure out all her different sub-plots and all the little stuff that happened in the books, and especially how it all fit together! And the Twilight series is nice because it is straight-forward and it's not as much to think about in the way of lots of different little things, but I find that her stories have a certain...depth...to them. I feel as if the story goes deeper than Harry Potter, just in the history of it and the certain mysteriousness she gives the story, which is different from the mystery and depth of Harry Potter. To me, both stories are great and very well written and should just be admired as their own stories, not compared to each other. ^-^
Thanks for the input Ashlyn. I do agree. Although it isn't obvious in the fac tthat I started this discussion but I think the only reason I did start it was because of the article in Entertainment Weekly about Stephenie Meyer being the next J.K. Rowling. It was a little nerve racking. Thanks eveyrone for your input. I really appreciate it!
J.K Rowling is by far the better writer. Don't get me wrong, I love Twilight. But I love Twilight for the romance and suspense. The Harry Potter series is amazing- look at how many names she made up! Whether it be character names, spell names, incantations, beasts, ect., J.K. has taken the cake on putting her imaginative juices to the test. Plus, the series has so many layers that all come together in the end. Twilight is a great book but it's definitely not even close to being on-par with Harry Potter.
I agree with most of you here. J.K. Rowling really is the better author. Her plots and subplots would make any normal person completely dizzy trying to keep straight. I do enjoy Stephenie Meyer's books--I've probably read all four that have been released at least 2-3 times--but the plots are really not all that complicated. She does a good job of getting into Bella's head and seeing the world from one character's POV. In the HP series, Rowling lets you see from many different and varied POV's. So many things are going on at once that you don't even realize all she was setting up until you've read the whole series. I look forward to seeing more work from both authors. :)
If I had to choose. JK Rowling. But that's mostly cause I hate SM
i have read 7 harry potter books and only the 3rd twilight book. Christopher Paolini is the best, and I think stephenie Meyer comes in second. JK Rowling is ok i guess.
thanks for all your input you guys. I'm glad to see that im not the only one that hasn't fallen so hard for edward that my own head has fallen off too. (giggles to self)I love twilight as i have said before and am yes obsessed. but i may nearly worship Harry Potter, and I haven't even read the whole series yet (winces and hopes she is not yelled at)
Thanks again for the input!!!
Your post cracks me up because I feel the same way. I can't read Twilight too often because I start to wonder why my husband doesn't treat me like Edward treats Bella every second of every day.. but he is a great guy.
I haven't read Stephanie Meyer at all...maybe I'll get a chance sometime soon. (I borrowed several books from my best friend and his wife, so I need to read those first.) However, something in Jessica's original post caught my eye. "A 12 year girl who is obsessed with Twilight said that she likes them better because she can understand them. That to me automatically means that Rowling is a better writer."
I have to disagree. I think it's all a matter of taste. Some folks don't like having to think while they read. They want to have everything laid out in front of them; they don't want to have to think. These are the people who read Mark Twain and think he's a racist; they don't read between the lines to discover how Twain is blasting slavery and other social issues. You really have to think about it. Now, consider Judy Blume. Her books are light reading, easy to finish in 30 minutes or so. They're much, much easier to understand. Does that mean she's a better writer? Not necessarily. If you prefer light reading, then to you, she's probably a better writer. I would personally rather read her than Twain, but not because she's easier to understand. Twain really does make me think harder when I read, and sometimes I'm just not in the mood for that.
I think it's human nature to try to compare somebody talented to an iconic person in that field. How many times have we heard about the "next Michael Jordan"? Heck, I even heard Pamela Anderson once called the "next Marilyn Monroe". I think it's all just our way to trying to provide some frame of reference for those who might not know of the person being discussed. So, for those who have never heard of Stephanie Meyer (like me), magazines may decide to call her the "next J.K. Rowling", especially if she has ANY similarities to Rowling.
So what you're saying is that everyone has their own opinion and limits to books. Right?
More or less, yes. That's part of what makes reading so much fun. Three people, for example, can read the exact same book and come up with three vastly different opinions. The Series of Unfortunate Events, for example. My wife read the first book while cooking dinner, and then had our best friend read it after she finished. When I got back from the store an hour later, they were both throwing it at me and telling me to hurry up and read it so we could talk about it. I sat down and read it as I ate, and when I finished, I mentioned that I thought it was brilliant. I loved how the author wasn't afraid to use huge words, and then define them almost sarcastically, as if to say "if you couldn't infer that, you're a moron", and I liked that he he had a much darker tone than you might expect. My wife thought the book was horribly sick, and refused to read the rest of the series. Our friend was in agreement with my wife, but added more opinions. He thought the writing style was horrible, because Snicket doesn't give every little detail about everything, whereas my wife and I found that to be trivial. He chose not to read the rest of the series, simply because he cared for neither the writing nor the darker tone. So, who's right? Is Lemony Snicket a brilliant author or a horrible writer? Is Edgar Allen Poe talented or completely mental...or a lot of both? It's all opinion. Wow....that was long-winded. I guess I'm just gearing up for another year of teaching math...hard to believe it'll be my 11th. I can't be that old!
hehe. It gives good points and examples! I agree that it is all based on opinion. You only think that the bad guy or good guy is who they are because of your own opinion. Greed is something everyone feels. Pride happens to all of us and brings us down. No one is really a hero. Everyone can be a bad guy because they wrong us in some way. That intimidates us and makes us judgmental. No one's perfect.
And I highly doubt you're old. People sound wise or such. They say the old are wise or senile. That doesn't matter. But by the sound of it. You sound quite wise. But the age part sounds a little off. You can't be that old. But I won't ask in case of offense.
See? That isn't that old! You still have a long life ahead of you. The young can be wise!!
Yeah, but you can be TOO wise when you're young. Kinda messes up your childhood. I would always construct my Christmas list very carefully, paying close attention to price and item scarcity, because I didn't want my parents to spend a lot of money or have to drive all over to find the toy. (Ah, the days before online shopping! I would love to see my students try to live the way I did in middle school. Most of them wouldn't last a week. What am I saying??? They wouldn't last three days.)
ha ha! I know what you mean. Sometimes your so wise that everyone thinks you talk in riddles or cryptic messages and think you're crazy. And I believe it! I would say more like an hour if it was me! ha ha! I can never find what I'm looking for, even online shopping stumps me.
I love Robert Jordan's books; I just think he's sometimes got a little too much plot going on. I've had to reread the entire series with each new book, just so I can remind myself of what's happened. Hopefully the final WOT book won't be slaughtered by the guy hired to finish it.RIP, Robert Jordan
It's really sad when a great author dies. They're works go unfinished. Even when they are ended you hope for more. I hope R.A Salvatore doesn't die anytime soon or I will be really sad!!
At least Jordan had about half the final book written, and the rest jotted down in notes and told to his wife, so the author can "easily" finish it.
Let's just hope there isn't any screwing up.
Dragon Reborn was pretty good. By "Path of Daggers", I was wondering when he was going to end the series, because I felt like it was really starting to drag. The last few books drove me crazy at times with their plot points. (Perrin searched for his kidnapped wife for how many books? Three?)
Whoa! don't spoil it for me! I'm only on the first book! Perrin has a wife? Is it Egwene? Wait don't tell me!! I'll figure it out! *sigh* now I'm curious. I have this very bad habit of skipping ahead in books so I can figure out the ending. It makes things spoiled and ruins the fun. I can't help it though!!
I go for J.k rowling but cornelia funke is 264723497236487164876872643812648761294372648126439213647891263412634612834761863418732641723542354971623479812634 times better than her!
with the stephanie VRS. JK Rowling thing, JK rowling wrote great books it must have taking her like a thousand years to think of all that great stuff. and no one ever thought of that. ever. she created a whole world.
but with stephanie's work ive seen other romace with werewolfs and vampires. i mean i like stephanie's books a lot there just starting to grow on me but i will never stop loving the harry potter books.
and everyone's saying stephanie is the new JK Rowling. but thats only because a lot of girls like romance but i think that for the fact that only girls really like it the harry potter books girls and boys can love harry potter. so here's my answer.
JK ROWLING ALL THE WAY
... You should know mine Kenzie. haha! I cannot find any other more detailed or any other author who could match him! Or Drizzt for that matter. He's the best author I've EVER read about! *sigh* I can't wait for October.
I know that you know what I'm talking about.
I haven't read much of the Twilight books yet, but I'm starting to read the first one because some of my friends really like the books, and they always talk about it. Even though I'm not far into Twilight, I would prefer J.K. Rowling, because Twilight way too lovey dovey. Example: This is Bella thinking. " Edward's sweater fit snugly on his perfectly muscled chest." Another one is still Bella thinking. "The lightning that flowed between us when we were sitting next to each other in chemistry........." Also, I think I know what my friends that have read Twilight would say right now. My sister would definetlely choose Stephanie Meyers. She decided not to finish the last Harry Potter book, when it came out, whereas when Breaking Dawn came out, she pulled an all nighter. One of my friends would probably choose Stephanie Meyers, even though she hasn't read Harry Potter, yet. She says she doesn't like to read big books, but she read Twilight, anyway. I think I know that she would answer the way I did for her. I think I know her well enough to say that. My other friend would probably choose J.K. Rowling. She likes Twilight, but she doesn't love it. She went crazy about Harry Potter though.
That's what I have for my input. I hope I hear from more J.K. Rowling fans.
P.S. I like J.K. Rowling better, even though she says things that aren't even necessary. {Did you know that she's richer than the queen of England too??!! That didn't affect what I said though.}
Oh, yeah. I think Stephanie Meyers is better with the press, and all of those things. She only says things that are necessary, and things like that. But, overall, I think J.K. Rowling is the better writer.
Once again, I think that these books shouldn't be compared this way. I think they should be left alone to be their own books. Each author has a different style of writing and so they're going to be very different, and the people who prefer Stephanie Meyer's style of writing are obviously going to say that Stephanie Meyer is better, and same for J.K. Rowling.I also think that these books actually complement each other very nicely. Harry Potter is an amazing story and it's so complex and exciting. Readers love to try and figure out what J.K. Rowling is going to do next! Twilight is not as complex and not as difficult to figure out all the plot lines, because there aren't very many. Harry Potter is great for suspense and action, but for those people who like romance too, there's not much of that. In Twilight, there's almost nothing *but* romance! Like I've said, I think they complement each other amazingly! ^-^
hmmmm....I will vote for Stephenie Meyer. J.K Rowlings is really my type of author and also I'm a romantic so I go with Stephenie Meyer. But they are both good authors in so many different ways.
ya but jk rowling was pretty romantic too. i mean with harry and ginny and ron and hermione...just not as much.
Well, you have to consider this: Girls and boys both like Harry Potter. Meanwhile, mostly girls like Twilight, because it's so romantic. But, then again, I'm a girl, and I'm not obsessed with Twilight. I mean, I didn't finish the first book yet, but still...... They're both pretty good writers, but I would probably choose J.K. Rowling if I HAD to make a choice. However, J.K. Rowling shouldn't have made certain comments about the series, that she did. Oh, well.

But what i want to know is who you guys prefer: J.K. Rowling or Stephenie Meyer.
I personally think that Stephenie Meyer is no where near being the next J.K. rowling. I love her stories but she isn't a good Writer. She has good plots. A 12 year girl who is obsessed with Twilight said that she likes them better because she can understand them. That to me automatically means that Rowling is a better writer.
What do you think?
