SOS: Serious Overload of Series discussion

I Know I Should, But I Can't
BDB. I've read the first three(at the beginning of the year) and they all received 3 or 4 stars. I have all of the others except the latest but I can't bring myself to read the next one. I don't know why. Perhaps it's the pressure of so many people loving them and I'm not a die hard fan, at least not yet.
Sometimes you're just not in the mood. I enjoyed the two Night Huntress World books, but I just couldn't get into the Night Huntress series. Of course, the fact that I dislike first person POV probably has something to do with it.
I don't mind first person POV. I think it's more to do with the fact that I think I'm going to really love the series. The weird thing is that when I find a series I really love I stop reading it - because I don't want it to end. e.g Vampire Academy, I've read the first two in the series and stopped because I loved them and don't want things to change (sad isn't it).
But Night Huntress is the first series I have conciously stopped myself from reading at all.
Does that make any sense at all??
It makes sense to me. I've got all three books in Krentz's Dreamlight Trilogy. I love her writing in all three of her genres. I own all of her books (I think). I love the Arcane Society books (which these are). And the books sit in my pile to be picked up and moved in favor of something else. Sometimes I think I'm reluctant to start something I've been anticipating because I'm afraid it will fall short of my expectations.
Makes sense to me Charlotte. I do that all the time.Sandra J, just finished Midnight Crystal yesterday. Once again JAK got it right, didn't disappoint. Interesting mix of The Guild and J&J. Go on, read them, I dare ya. LOL.
I know. I've been on a serious reread of some of her earlier books. I reread Affair yesterday. Maybe instead of rereading Trust Me, I'll start Midnight Crystal. I really like the Harmony books.
Yes, I'd noticed you'd been re-reading JAK & AQ, always a good thing. Love Affair. The Harmony books are some of my favourites!!
I have done the same thing with the Chicagoland Vampire series -- everyone seems to love the series, I love UF and I live in Chicagoland -- but I can't bring myself to read them. The Night Huntress series is really fun -- I recommend just starting. :)
Lol!! Why are the ebooks so darned expensive?!!! Okay. I will request from the library. :) you have given me the nudge I needed.
Just requested it from my local library. :) And while I was at it (and looking at your 5 star shelf), I also reqeusted Anne Bishop's Daughter of the Blood (another one I know I should but haven't yet). :)So this thread was productive for me! LOL.
I started Daughter of the Blood and couldn't finish it. Just didn't do it for me, but maybe you'll like it. It was one of those highly recommended series, so maybe my expectations were too high. But I second your recommendation for Night Huntress!
I also have the Chicagoland Vamps and the Daughter of the Blood on my TBR. I will get round to them some time.Glad this discussion is prompting you guys to try something new!!
I know it's not a series, but the whole world seems to love American Gods and I'm sure I would like it, but I keep pushing it off for other books.
I have had that one and Good Omens by him and Terry Pratchett on my bookshelf for .... ever. I can't seem to read either, so I'm not help. LOL!
LOL. Good Omens is on my shelf too, but I recently tried to read the first Discworld book (Pratchett) and didn't even finish the book - and it's a small book! - so Good Omens is going to have to sit on the TBR shelf a little longer.
I read Good Omens and no, it wasn't my cuppa. It wasn't bad, I just didn't love it.Now Anne Bishop's Black Jewels series? LOVED it.:)
I tried the first Discworld book also & hated it. I was very surprised 'cause usually I love weird stuff. But not this time. Luckily that was a borrow and not a buy for me. I'm not trying Terry Pratchett again, too much other stuff out there to read.
Sandra - I was surprised too, I expected to really enjoy it, having heard it's all quirky and out there. Mine was a library book, so it just went back unfinished. Oh well, leaves more time for other books!
I have a weird love for Good Omens. It was instrumental in building an awesome crowd in high school (we were partly held together with books, mainly that one but also Tom Robbins, Mercedes Lackey and Piers Anthony). At that time Good Omens wasn't available in the US, but I had one from the SF & F Book Club and another kid had one he'd bought on a visit to England. But honestly I have greatly disliked everything Pratchett or Gaiman has written otherwise. I do not like Discworld at all (can't stand corniness) and I did not care for American Gods either. Sometimes it is just people have different tastes. I know so many people who love authors I can't bear - particularly Marion Zimmer Bradley and Ursula K. LeGuin. Can't read anything by those two, their perspectives make me ill.
I'm up to number 18/19 in the discworld series, they're great fun, but I guess not to everyone's taste.
Just picked up Some Girls Bite and Daughters of the Blood from the library and starting Some Girls Bite today!

I finally faced my demons and read Halfway to the Grave. It confirmed my worst fears - I absolutely bloody loved it. Fell hopelessly in love with Bones and cried my eyes out during the final chapter.
Now I want to go on and read the next one - but I've got too many other books to read for challenges!!!
LOL, good for you, Charlotte - it's a great series, IMHO.I have a couple of series where I own a number of the books, but wasn't wowed by the first book (Anita Blake, Sookie and FaeFever), so I haven't read any further in the series. I'm assured they get better with subsequent books, but I just can't bring myself to find out.

yay! very happy for you. I am also thrilled you started this thread, b/c it made me read the Chicagoland Vamp series and start the Black Jewels series --both of which I now love.
I might have to try Halfway to the Grave, Charlotte! That sounds awesome. On another note, has anyone read Grave Witch? I opened it in the bookstore and read five or ten pages and was wholly put off. It sounded like it was mostly lifted straight out of Anita Blake, except for Death standing there in blue jeans talking like a normal person. What???? Does it get any better?

I heard it does get better, but I tried to read #1 of her Havens series and couldn't get more than 30 pages in -- I couldn't stand it.

I loved the first Anita Blake book and then stopped reading them (because I liked it so much). Sookie I have been reading - they're OK, book 4 - Dead to the World has been the best, I've never looked at Eric the same way since.
Faefever is another series on my list that I just haven't got to yet (along with Chicagoland and many others).
Ruby - I thought Grave Witch was really good, but at the same time, it isn't anything original. I would recommend giving it another go :)

I'll have to consider starting "Black Jewels" in 2011. Been seein' it a lot lately 'round here.

Love this series, eagerly awaiting
Luckily only started reading this series in about August so not too long to wait, but why don't these authors write faster. LOL.
I can't wait for that one! You're lucky! That's a definite benny of starting a series later ... less time between releases.
I really love Black Jewels as well! At least the main trilogy. Some of the peripheral books that came after aren't so interesting. But I absolutely adore the main ones:
,
, and
.
I just finished reading
yesterday and really liked it - just trying to get my hands on the next one!It was different to what I expected when I heard about it, I thought it'd be told from the main girl's POV and she'd be trying to work out who to trust/what's happening etc. In fact, it was very much the other way round. Anyway, I recommend it :)
Oh I have so many... Dark Hunter by Sherilyn Kenyon (read the first one but have been putting off the rest since there are SO MANY!)
Fever by KMM (read the first one but never continued because I am not too crazy about fae.)
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr (again not too crazy about fae)
Harry Potter (not on Kindle and thats a lot of reading to do in paper. Starting book 1 in December for a read-a-long though. )
And the last one is The Immortals by Alyson Noel. Read the first one and loved it thought second was meh and a bit confusing. Hesitating to continue. )
I just read Wicked Lovely (friend's copy) and thought it was pretty awful, but since she also had the fourth book, Radiant Shadows, I read that too and it was actually pretty good for Young Adult Paranormal Romance. Now I have to read the two in between, but I doubt I will be buying them.
I thought Wicked Lovely was better than Twilight(lucky to get 3 stars), but thats not saying much, I'm up to Ink Exchange also.
The Hunger Games.YA novels are one of my favorite genres but I'm terrified of giving THG a try. It seems likes so many YA books my friends rave about (The Dark Divine, Before I Fall, Hush, Hush, If I Stay), I end up hating. I hear so many great things about THG but I don't want it to end up on my "smack a bitch upside the head" shelf. If I never read it, I don't have to worry about being disappointed & I have something to look forward to when I get to it....someday.

I thought I was the only on who doesn't like Hush, Hush. I hated that book. Don't know why.
But I do like THG though, first 2 were really good, the ending was kinda let down but still good.
I loved THG! The second and third ones weren't quite as engaging, but still good. The first one was amazing tho.Series that I keep putting off reading but have heard (over and over) are good are Sookie and Chicagoland. I keep thinking, "Ya, maybe I'll read that next," but for whatever reason I pick something else up. Maybe one of these days.

Why can't I read the Night Huntress series?? What's stopping me??
Is it just me? Or does anyone else have a series that they just can't pick up???
What's your nemesis?
