Hi there Debbie! Welcome to our little family of junkies! I must confess that I too became hooked on the genre with Beverly Lewis. It was after we moved away from the Lancaster area & I missed the clip-clop of buggies on our road.

It was fun. I was always surprised by how much extra "traffic" we heard when the moon was full!

J.E.B. Spredemann (jspredemann) | 170 comments Hi Debbie and welcome!

Reading anything interesting right now? I'm in the middle of Shelley Shepard Gray's 'Peace', which goes along with her Secrets of Crittenden County Series. I really enjoyed the series and this book is good so far, too.

I'm also in the process of writing, reviewing, and editing. :) It's a lot of work, but so worth it!

Blessings,

J. Spredemann

P.S. Do you have a favorite author?

message 507: by Cecelia (new)

Cecelia (goodreadscomcecelia_dowdy) | 10 comments Hi, I'm Cecelia Dowdy and I recently joined this group. I review Christian books on my blog. I've reviewed countless Amish (and other Plain sects) novels. The last Amish book that I read was An Amish Miracle by Beth Wiseman . I really enjoyed one of the novellas in this collection since it dealt with an overweight heroine. I don't see many overweight characters in Christian fiction. I reviewed the book here if interested: http://ceceliadowdy.com/blog/2013/12/...

I've also research the Amish by visiting Lancaster County, PA. I even had dinner with an Amish woman and her family. I also featured a series on my blog - wondering why Amish fiction was so popular. I did this years ago, but, after taking a poll with several Amish authors - I came up with a list of reasons why Amish fiction is so appealing: http://ceceliadowdy.com/blog/2009/03/...

Which Amish titles and authors are you favorites?

message 508: by Christy (new)

Christy | 18 comments Has anyone read Promise to Return? I see that it has lots of good reviews. I've always enjoyed Amish Fiction; but was reluctant to read this one because it seemed from the back of the book that Miriam may not remain Amish. Anytime a story is about someone leaving the Amish it just loses something in the story for me. I read Seasons by this same author and it however was wonderful. I felt like it was reading a true Amish experience.

Rowena (rphilbeck) | 12 comments Hello all, My name is Rowena from Texas. Last year I picked up a Amish fiction at Half Price Books and fell in love with it. I love the mystery books. I found some books by Amanda Flower that I want to read in the future. I read all of Linda Castillo and waiting for her new one in April to come out. I really didn't realize their were so many Amish mystery writers. They are really good and I love the series books too. Looking forward in meeting and talking with all of you.

message 512: by Christy (new)

Christy | 18 comments Rowena another Amish mystery writer is P.L. Gaus. Also try Laura Bradford she has 2 Amish mystery books out. I personally enjoyed these.

message 513: by Sicily (new)

Sicily Yoder (amishauthor101) | 39 comments Rowena,
Whoopie Pie Bakers is mystery as is Single in Indiana. These are short-story volume serials, but the cost of all volumes comes out very close to the normal novel price of $7.99. The first volume of Whoopie Pie Bakers is free.

Natalie (creativecountry0407gmailcom) | 1132 comments @Missy: Welcome. I hope you enjoy the group reads. Beverly Lewis is also a good choice even though her books isn't one of the featured reads this month. Even though the author said that Murder Simply Brewed (Amish Village Mystery #1) by Vannetta Chapman can be read separately from the earlier mystery in Indiaina since it's a different series, I would start with either Falling to Pieces (Shipshewana Amish Mystery #1) by Vannetta Chapman , A Perfect Square (Shipshewana Amish Mystery #2) by Vannetta Chapman , and Material Witness (Shipshewana Amish Mystery #3) by Vannetta Chapman , or A Promise for Miriam (The Pebble Creek Amish, #1) by Vannetta Chapman , A Home for Lydia (The Pebble Creek Amish #2) by Vannetta Chapman , and A Wedding for Julia (The Pebble Creek Amish #3) by Vannetta Chapman , just so your used to Chapman's writing style.

Toni (tonilh) Hello! My name is Toni, I am new to Goodreads and I have been a fan of Amish fiction for many years. I grew up in Ohio near the large Amish community there. The first Amish fiction author I read was Beverly Lewis and I have read nearly all of her books.

I recently finished four books by Vanetta Chapman and have just received Murder Simply Brewed (Amish Village Mystery #1) by Vannetta Chapman from the library. I look forward to reading and discussing with the group.

Hi Toni! Welcome to the group! Originally from California, I recently moved to Amish country in Southern Indiana.

I don't know if you've read any of my books before, but I love to meet new readers. You can find my Amazon author page here: http://www.amazon.com/J.E.B.-Spredema...

By the grace of God, Amazon readers have rated my books (14 in all) an average of 4.6 STARS! My book, An Unforgivable Secret (Amish Secrets - Book 1), was nominated in the Best of Amish Fiction category here on Goodreads. I hope YOU will love my books as well!

Be sure to pick up a FREE copy of Danika's Journey (Amish Girls Series - Book 2). Here's the link: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

Many Blessings and nice to meet you!

Heather Hello Everyone,

I am new to the message board but not new to Amish fiction. Shockingly, I have not read any books by Beverly Lewis.
I am currently reading Marta Perry's (I saw that she posts in this group) series "Pleasant Valley" I believe I am on the las of the original set and then I picked up an additional book from the library that seems to e a supplement.

I hope to see what lively discussions can be garnered on this site.

C. | 84 comments Hi everyone.I have been enjoying Amish Fiction for years.I live near the world's largest Amish community here in Ohio and the first Amish stories I read were books that I picked up in an Amish shop when visiting their community.I bought several titles by Mary Christner Borntrager, then I went to my library and got several by Beverly Lewis, and my favorites are by Beth Wiseman,Amy Clipson,Mary Ellis,Shelly Shepard Gray,Marta Perry,Cindy Woodsmall, and Dale Cramer.

There are still several authors that have been around for awhile that I want to try such as Jerry S. Eicher,Suzanne Woods Fisher,Patricia Davids,Tricia Goyer and Kim Vogel Sawyer[whose wonderful Sommerfield Mennonite trilogy,I loved].

However,I am extremely leery of all the 'new' authors trying to 'cash-in' on the popularity of Amish Fiction who know very little to nothing about the Amish and write books that do not portray true Amish in any way, some of these books are even borderline erotica!

I caution everyone to be wary of any 'Amish' book by an author not known for Christian or Amish fiction,or unknown authors, and be sure to read the 1-2 star reviews, which usually tell that the book is in no way an honest portrayal of the Amish!

Hey thanks, hers look good, will check her out!

I forgot to mention I also loved the book Love Finds You in Charm, Ohio by Annalisa Daughety

One of the best, and most fun,Amish-themed romances I have ever read, even though it is also a 'coming of age' story.

and nonfiction info on the Amish culture~

Christy: You're right about Linda Byler's books. I read the first two books in the "Lancaster Burning" series and loved them. However, I understand that Byler's publisher, Good Books in Intercourse, PA, has gone out of business. So the third book in this series, The Witnesses, scheduled for release on March 28, 2014, has not yet been published. Do you, or does anyone else out there, have any idea what has happened to this book? I really would like to know how this ends, or who the culprit was. (And I know that there are a number of other readers out there who would also like to know.)

I would appreciate any information anyone may have regarding the status of this book.

message 546: by Christy (new)

Christy | 18 comments You are right it was not published. The last I read about they were waiting on another publisher to pick it up. She also had a Christmas read scheduled for this year; but unfortunately it to was cancelled. I read articles from her in the Connection magazine; but so far all I read was she was still waiting to hear. I also have the first two in Lancaster Burning and hopefully one day it will be resolved.

message 547: by Carolyn E (new)

Carolyn E | 239 comments Christy: Thanks for the info. I hope she will soon be able to get the book published. I did notice that Simon & Schuster listed Linda Byler as one of their authors, but I have not been able to get any info from them either. (Their response was to add me to their mailing list.)
