Leea So, I think that i'm going to return my Nook Color for are regular Nook. I'm finding that it's hurting my eyes when I read. I also was trying to read outside and it was so hard because of the glair. I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced this? I love the Nook Color but Just feel like it just does not fit my needs. I hope they let me exchange it :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) You should if it's bothering you. It might make a world of difference to read on something without a backlight.

message 53: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I know I would never want a backlit screen to read on. :) good luck on your exchange. I have had really bad experiences with B&N's customer service so I hope it goes smoothly for you!

message 54: by Leea (new)

Leea This sounds lame but i'm sending my husband... He's in sales and somehow the man get anything and everything he wants. I know i'm a wimp :) I do hope it works out if not - i'll just have to be okay with it.

message 55: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments Sorry to hear that Leea. I've had issues with my Nook as well. Like hello I lost all the books in my wishlist. I was pissed.

There are too many glitches with mine but I've never had a problem with the brightness. I know you can control the brightness.

Well when you get your other one, let me know, so I can lend you some books. Wait...can I still lend you books from the Nook color to the regular Nook?

message 56: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Marcella, I believe so -- it is just from nook account to nook account. I have a friend who lends to me and she has a nook color (I have a plain old nook).

Leea, you could always sell it and then just get a regular Nook or a Kindle. :) My first ereader was the first generation Kindle, I bought it refurbed for cheap to see if I would like ereaders. I loved it and sold it (kindles are different than nooks, even after you de-register, the books bought stay on the kindle) -- I sold it loaded with lots of books and recouped all my money and then I bought the newest kindle with the money, which at the time was the Kindle 2 (now there is a Kindle 3). Yes I have both a Kindle and a Nook. :)

I saw today that amazon is offering an AMAZING deal. For $114, you can buy a brand new wifi only Kindle. It comes with three deals $20 Amazon gift card (you purchase it for $10), 6 audible books for $6 and an mp3 album for $1. The only downside is instead of the regular screen saver, it is advertisements.

message 57: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments Thanks Regina! I think I am going to go to Best Buy and see if I can get a new Nook since I have had nothing bur glitches since I bought the thing. I know I'm technically challenged but I don't think the glitches are from user error.

message 58: by Leea (new)

Leea Thanks Ladies! I really feel bad because I did a lot of research but I never did take it outside... I've only had it a week so I have not had any problems. My husband called our B & N store and they said each store have a person who know's all about them and is in charge of deciding what to do if they are damaged. I bought a Nook because I wanted to get books from a neighboring library who is no sharing eBooks (Kindle does not have that option - yet :) I was outside with the kids reading and it was really hard to see. So i'm hoping to get it exchanged tomorrow :) I'll let y'all know how it goes.

message 59: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Marcella I doubt it is your fault at all! All techinical things have bad ones that are produced. Definitely take it in. You don't need that stress while reading!

message 60: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Leea, I don't think you should feel bad. It happens.

message 61: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 886 comments I hear you Regina. I will do that this weekend. Thanks!

Leea...do let us know when you get it so I can lend you some SMUT!!!

message 62: by Leea (new)

Leea Oh I will Marcella... Wish I had some books to lend you ;( Soon for sure. I only feel bad because it's a gift from my husband for my birthday. :)

message 63: by Leea (new)

Leea Oh Lucky ME!!! Let me tell you that B & N rocks! Stevie at the Stockton, Ca store hooked me up. She exchanged my Nook Color for a Nook (3G). She even returned my anti-glare cover and case. So now I need to figure out how to use the Nook :) I have to say that Stevie as an avid reader herself understood that the Nook Color can be hard on the eyes and did teach me so ways to fix that. For me it's more the glare.

Unfortunately I did lose all my side loaded books which is strange, but I have them on my laptop. I so excited!

Marcella, I don't know if your B & N store does this but mine has a Nook Specialist and that person teaches a class on how to use them. During the class a few people has some issues and she was able to fix it. Good Luck Girl!

willaful Leea wrote: "Unfortunately I did lose all my side loaded books which is strange, but I have them on my laptop. I so excited! "

They probably downloaded your B&N library for you, but not your documents.

Glad it worked out okay! I'm totally chicken about returns; I make my husband do them. :-)

message 66: by Leea (new)

Leea LOL Willaful, I was going to do the same thing, make my husband return it for me. I decided it better put my big girl panties on and do the deed. So glad I did because not i'm flying high off my return. hehe!

message 67: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Yes! Congrats!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh nice! Hope you like it. I actually love the buttons on the Nook classic because I can rest my thumb on them and be able to change the page without having to really move. I feel my finger always hovering over the screen on the color version.

Yeah, the sideloaded books aren't shared between devices, only the library ones. It's not hard to have to reload them though at least.

message 69: by Leea (new)

Leea Why did I hold out getting an eReader?? I'm obsessed with this device and love that it's just sitting in my purse. I was able to so some much needed shopping by myself (a miracle in itself ladies) yesterday and stopped for lunch, the line was out the door so I just grabbed my reader. LOVE IT!!! Plus I like knowing all my favorite guys are just right there waiting for me if needed. You never know when you need a little Alexander, Jamie or BDBrother :)

Now i'm looking at my bookshelf filled with paper books like they are this strange foreign object that I just don't understand. LOL!!

So for those holding out, like I was... run don't walk and get one ;)

message 70: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I agree. :) My Kindle changed my life in almost a fundamental way!

message 71: by Leea (new)

Leea Yes, Exactly Regina. :)

message 72: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I absolutely adore my Kindle, but nothing will ever take the spot of a real book in my hands. I buy a book on my Kindle and read it, but if I fall head over heels in love with it I order it from Amazon so I can have that beautiful book with it's gorgeous dustjacket and cover. There's just something about a print book that is extra special.

Speaking of extra special print books! I can't wait for the anniversary edition of Outlander!

message 73: by Leea (new)

Leea oh same here... Did you see that DG is giving 50 away here on GR. I already have 3 Outlander books. 1. my husband gave to me for Valentines day a few years ago with a sweet message in it. 2. Hardcover and 3. another softcover that I lend out to friends. I do want to get all the Outlander books on my Nook, just because :)

message 74: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Apr 15, 2011 02:43PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I wish Outlander was still free for Nook and Kindle. About 3ish months ago I think, it was free for a brief time.

That's how I got started on the Fever series. It's like crack. The first one is always free...

message 75: by Leea (new)

Leea I remember that... I missed out again, bummer! Maybe something with come out for the 20th anniversary. Outlander Crack. hmmm!

message 76: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I got 20 copies free for promotion, of which I still have three. Then I have 2 hardcover and 1 paperback. I'm still getting a new one. I did see she was giving it away! I'm already signed up!

message 77: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) This is sort of our default ereader thread in this group. Okay, I have a questino about removing DRM. Anyone do this or have done it successfully? I found out about a Calibre plug in that removes DRM. I personally want to do this for personal reasons so that I can read my Nook books on my Kindle and vice versa. I was able to get it to work for all the Kindle books. I can now read my Kindle books on my Nook which is awesome, bc my husband often wants to read one of my kindle books and now I don't have to give up my kindle to do so! But, I can't get it to work for all of my Nook books. Here is the plug in and the blog that taks about it.

Anyone successfully do it for B&N Nook books? If so, do you have advice for me? I would love it if I could read my Nook books that I bought from B&N on my Kindle as I just prefer to read on my Kindle. Thank you!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Regina wrote: "This is sort of our default ereader thread in this group..."

I'll change the title to reflect the topic being about all ereaders.

I have not removed a DRM, but I'm a little jumpy about it because I already know more about filesharing than I probably should.

It makes sense that you'd want to remove the DRM for personal use if you're not redistributing the books. I can't help with getting yours to work though, since I have no experience with it. If you can find a plug-in that works, I'd be happy to know how you got it to work, since the only time I ever asked a friend about doing it for personal reasons (not redistributing), she sent me a verrrrry long code to use and it confused me so I didn't even try.

The only time I ever mentioned something about DRM's in the NOOK group, someone said they weren't going to go there because it wasn't legal, so I don't even know if they'd be of much help.

D.G. My Hubby found this article a while back and I posted it in another site I frequent. A lot of my friends have found it very useful so maybe it can help you out Regina!

Ebook Formats, DRM and You — A Guide for the Perplexed

message 80: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Thank you!!!

And Stacia, I agree it is illegal to distribute, but I am not clear if it is illegal to do it for my own personal purposes? But I haven't read the statute -- off to read that article.

message 81: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) LOL D.G. that is the article I linked above. :) For some reason the plugins referenced in the article are not working for me to remove the DRM from my Nook/B&N books so I can read them on my kindle -- they only work for some books.

message 82: by D.G. (new)

D.G. LOL! I didn't click on your link...I don't have an ereader yet so I have no clue what's the problem. :)

Removing DRM (for whatever reason) is illegal. It's very difficult to enforce because I imagine that most people that do it do it for personal use and it's not as anybody has the right to access your computer but if a publisher wants to make an example of somebody, they bloody well can. It's one of the reasons why I haven't gotten an ereader yet...it pisses me off that I buy a book and somebody else has the right to dictate how I read it.

message 83: by Leea (new)

Leea I agree with you D.G. when I buy a paperback book i tend to lend it to everyone who want's to read it. No need for them to buy it when they can just borrow it. It seems like the publishing industry is just trying to make sure they do end up like the music industry did a few years back with napster. It's a fine line!

message 84: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think the difference is that when you loan out a book the intention is for you to get it back. Where is if you can share the e-file you can give to to as many people as you want and the purchase of 1 book is now owned by 15 people.

I mean, in a way I get it. I can understand why they are trying to prevent people from file sharing books. I just think that you should be able to loan a book more then one time.

message 85: by Leea (new)

Leea I know what you mean. It's all in the intensions. If each of those 15 people gave it to 15 people... I think you should be able to loan for than once also :)

message 86: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I totally understand that people shouldn't be allowed to distribute copies of books (which would happen if people were allowed to lend to multiple people at the same time.) But they could allow people to lend the book to more than one person (as long as only one person is holding the book) or even allow people to lend the book for longer periods of time.

Also I think the price of ebooks shouldn't be the same as a hardback/paperback UNLESS you have the same rights as you have with a paperback (meaning, you can lend it to whomever you want.) As it is now, publishers want to have their cake and eat it too by pricing the ebooks almost at the same price of the paper books when they don't incur in as many costs.

message 87: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I agree completely with all of that D.G. I agree completely that they don't need to be as strict about it. They have the lending capability, and it would be nice if the lending time was more like 3 months. 14 days is so short.

Regina (reginar) Amazon just announced that starting later this year, the Kindle will be able to access books via overdrive at the libraries:

The Amazon Kindle team says:

We are excited to announce that a new feature, Kindle Library Lending, will be coming later this year. Kindle customers will be able to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 public libraries in the United States.

Kindle Library Lending will provide the same unique features customers love about Kindle and Kindle books, including the ability to read on any Kindle or free Kindle app, Whispersync technology that synchronizes your notes, highlights and last page read, real page numbers, and more. After a library book expires, if you ever decide to check it out again or purchase it from Amazon, all of your annotations and bookmarks will be preserved.

We are partnering with OverDrive, the leading provider of digital solutions to libraries, to bring a seamless library borrowing experience to Kindle. We will announce more information on Kindle Library Lending later this year.

Thank you for being a customer.

The Kindle Team

Gwennie (blessedwannab) That's so exciting! Thank you for posting that!

message 90: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I am super excited!

About the lending time, some overdrive library systems have a 21 day period -- and you can choose 7, 14 or 21 days. It depends on the library system.

I think Wendy was referring to loaning personal ebooks, not library books.

I often use ADE to return library books early. Just noticed that a book I returned a few days ago has eleven people waiting for it, so I'm glad I could!

message 92: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Oh!! Yes, the 14 day does seem short. Also the period of time to accept is short -- I think it is 7 days on the Nook and Kindle? Once I missed the acceptance period on the Nook, but the person was able to resend the loan to me. But I had not yet accepted it.

I return books early too (usually). I wish we could return audio books early. I am glad you did that -- it benefits everyone!

Thanks for keeping us updated - That's great! I knew amazon would catch on soon. I have a lot of friends who have Kindles.

message 94: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Yeah, I was referring the the personal book lending. I'm not much of a library person, but I think I will use it more for my Kindle.

Oh, that's awesome! A Kindle is on my wishlist and that was the only thing that bothered me about it. (Not that I'm lacking for paper books to read...)

message 96: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I just heard about the Kindle library lending! This is really making it difficult for me to settle on one! ;)

message 97: by Regina (last edited Apr 20, 2011 01:44PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) What are the ones you are considering? And then what is important to you in terms of functionality?

message 98: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Library lending is the first thing that's why the Kindle has been out of my consideration until now. I wanted something backlit because I read in dark places a lot (and I almost never read outside) but I'm concerned that would bother me when I start reading on it all the time. I read The Count of Monte Cristo on my iPod so I know I can handle a few hours a day on it, but I don't know what would happen long term.

message 99: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I read for hours at night in the dark, I just use a clip on light. I like the flexibility that I can take the light off my kindle and then read in the bright sun easily too. So there is that option too.

message 100: by Leea (new)

Leea Honestly D.G I would not get one that is backlit. I first had the Nook color - it's kinds like an iPad but with android technology and a lot less money. It hurt my eyes. I just read with a light on and it does not bother me at all now that I have just the regular Nook. Just my 2 cents :)
