What Else Are You Reading?

What are you reading in October 2010?
Yesterday I started reading Bury Your Dead by Louise Penny (mystery). And I finished Zombies vs. Unicorns, a surprisingly entertaining anthology. (You can click through for my full review if that interests you.) I also read/flipped through Wimbledon: A Celebration.I too am looking forward to CryoBurn. I had been planning to just get it at the library, but I think I might buy it, since it comes with a CD of almost all the books in the series. (I haven't made the jump to ebook yet, but I know I will eventually, so why not be prepared?)
I'm also looking forward to Laura Anne Gilman's Weight of Stone, the followup to Flesh and Fire. (Coming out on the same day as CryoBurn.)
I am about halfway through Soldier of the Mist by Gene Wolfe. After I finish that, I'll move on to:- War for the Oaks - Emma Bull
- Lakota Woman - Mary Crow Dog
- Journey by Moonlight - Antal Szerb
- Tomoe Gozen - Jessica Amanda Salmonson
- The Bloody Chamber - Angela Carter (hopefully in time for Halloween)
Just finished Fudoki, by Kij Johnson. I think I loved it in an understated way -- it should appeal to fans of Patricia McKillip & Catherynne Valente, though it isn't quite as ornate as either of those.Up next:
Janny wrote: "October for me will be Anathem"Yay! I love Neal Stephenson.
I'm re-reading Something Wicked This Way Comes in honor of the Season.
I'm continuing my rereading of classic literature I read as a child/teenager. My husband just got his Kindle, so he's joining me on the first two books: Frankenstein and Dracula. I'm not sure what will come after that. It's probably time for another non-fiction selection. Any suggestions?
I just finished 'Catching Fire' so I suppose a trip to the ol bookstore to pick up 'Mockingjay' is a must-do. :) Also, I just recieved Malcolm Gladwell's 'Tipping Point' as a gift from a completely random stranger. Not generally to my type of reading, but I owe it to her to give it a shot. :)
The Proteus Operation - James P. HoganSomething Wicked This Way Comes - Ray Bradbury
and still working on:
On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society - Lt. Col. Dave Grossman
I'm in the middle of "The Girl on the Boat" By P.G. Wodehouse. Just because I can use some ridiculous in my life. But otherwise I don't know yet as I'm due a trip to the library soon.
Aside from the group reads I have here at GR, I've still got my books from last month that I never read due to being stuck in a rut.
I just finished Soulless by Gail Carriger. I liked the setting and Carriger's quirky sense of humor. However, I thought the romance sub-plot was a little ridiculous. I hear the sequels are better so I plan to read them later.

I haven't decided yet if I'll be reading on in the series.
I just finished Just Another Judgement Day by Simon R. Green. It's the ninth book in the Nightside series and it was a bit better than the last couple of books.Candiss wrote: "I agree on all points. I've heard the sequels are a bit better so I figure I'll probably check them out.
Sigh, I'm still reading L.E. Modesitt,jr's "The Eternity Artifact." With any luck at all I hope to have it read by the end of this upcoming long weekend.
I was in the Nightside once again in the tenth book in the series, The Good, the Bad, and the Uncanny by Simon R. Green. It was a little rambling, but it did have some interesting plot and character development.

But it's actually short stories, which is fine but not perfect. I swear there is a mint to be made out there if someone would just write a dark comedy/ horror/ fantasy called Zombie vs Vampire Apocalypse. I would buy it just for the name.
Currently reading Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane and The Dead by James Joyce (Coyote Canyon Press Annotated Edition)
I really like Jon's efficiency by putting a link to her current month's bookshelf, so I made one for this month for me: My October shelf. Or here they are on my blog.
Just finished Intreigues by Mercedes Lackey, currently rereading War for the Oaks by Emma Bull (an old favorite), will be reading Out Of The Dark by David Weber (looks interesting though kind of grim).
I am in the middle of The Man in the High Castle and I have currently on my bookshelf waiting to be read: 1)The Yiddish Policemen's Union
2)Sexus
3)The Third Wedding
4)House of Leaves
5)God Is Dead
6)The Lost Symbol
7)Pharmakon
8)The Resurrectionist

by Stephenie MeyerI'm currently reading
by Boris Pasternak
by Brandon Sandersonand then I'll start on
by Suzanne Collins
Ooh, I love Finder. The Dervish House caught my eye in a bookstore, so once the library gets it to me I'll be taking a look at that.
I'm also planning to try some Timothy Zahn. I'm currently finishing a reread of Anathem.

It looks very very interesting. :) I couldn't find the featured book by Emma Bull at the library, so I got Finder. Glad to hear it's good!
I started, and finished, The Last Wish over the weekend. I was suprised that I liked it as much as I did. I'm starting Blood of Elves next.

Is it the first time you read The Man in the High Castle? I loved it and have read a couple of times. It got me interested in Alternate Reality type sci fi.
At the moment, I'm reading:The White Company, by Arthur Conan Doyle, and
The Green Man, by Kingsley Amis.
I'm not sure at all what is next on my list.
This is going to sound like a self-plug but it's not; I'm actually reading my wife's book, Tree of Life, this month, only this time from start to finish rather than in little pieces all over the place.Reading it on a Kindle makes it a lot more fun for me :)
In addition to reading our 2 selections for the month, I'm planning on Fire Study after that.I started reading Poison Study in August before the poll finished and it lost, but I enjoyed it so much I continued onto the sequel.
For non-fiction, I'm finishing up "You Can't Do That" a biography of political activist Marv Davidov.
Michael wrote: "It's Epic Fantasy month for me. I'll be reading The Black Prism and The Way of Kings en route to Towers of Midnight."Hi Michael just started "Way of Kings" - I am enjoying it so far but am reading slow to absorb.
Barb
i just finished acts of the apostles.dipped in and out of the entire harry potter series after a mega-weekend of watching all the released dvds.
in the middle of reading conan doyle's complete anthology of sherlock holmes and stieg larsson is on my list (off-genre, sorry).
got a hankering to go and re-read sci-fi/fantasy from the '60's - hopefully some of it is in e-book form because i'm geographically remote from anything like a bookstore!
and if anyone knows how to get hold of donald kingsbury's geta aka courtship rite stateside, i'd be really gratefully to hear from you.
Can you not pick it up from an Amazon used reseller?
i did buy once some used stuff. the books arrived and fell apart as soon as i opened them. that put me off doing it again.but i's a starting point, thanks for suggesting it. i'd really like an e-book version of it, but that's probably a long shot.
First I read Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper. A good little book on first contact. Last night I finished Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld. The sequel to Leviathan wasn't as original as the first book, but it was still very good.

I read Little Fuzzy at university in the '70's. I also read the others in the series. Cute, entertaining, most enjoyable

Just finished The man in the high castle, I'm sorry to say that it was a disappointing introduction to Phillip Dick's work. I expected something a bit more breathtaking consieering how innovative he is and it is a hugo award winning book :(
I've got a slew of brand new or even ARCs on my pile:CryoBurn, Pegasus, All Clear, Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files,
These are from the library:
Breath, Eyes, Memory, Mudbound, All Other Nights: A Novel.
currently reading: Labyrinth.
I own War for the Oaks and hope to read it.
Its been a tough month for reading for me. Feel like treading water. Been reading Kevin Anderson's Map of All Things, but only two thirds done.I want to read Cryoburn going to get at library and very interested in reading Towers of Midnight. Took Sanderson's new book out of library but at 1000 pages its hard to get motivated to carry the tome back and forth to work.
Clearly what you need is a Kindle. All books weigh the same and take up the same space in your briefcase that way!I'm reading:
Radium Halos: A Novel about the Radium Dial Painters - Shelly Stout
I finished The Last Light of the Sun last night. My review. I gave it four stars. I found it eminently listenable and coherent, moving at times, and quite good. I'm now starting The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, narrated by Lloyd James. If I make it through Anathem today, I will be very very happy. It's picked up considerably thank goodness.
stormhawk wrote: "Clearly what you need is a Kindle. All books weigh the same and take up the same space in your briefcase that way!"right there with ya, stormhawk. i love e-books.

I think the same, Jeffrey, although I have a Nook. And I didn't haul that brick back and forth to work. Read something on my Nook while I was reading it.
Stormhawk - Radium Halos sounds very interesting.
Sandra aka Sleo wrote: "Stormhawk - Radium Halos sounds very interesting. "So far it is, I'm about 1/3 through.
I have the Kindle but the book is free at the library and not interested enough to shell out the dough for an ebook on the kindle. Its also because been lugging work home with me too so its a double whammy.
Anyway I put the Man of All Things on the side and started reading Intrigues by Lackey today.
After finishing Frankenstein I read Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom and am now reading The Windup Girl, which I'm really loving and wish I had read it with the group, it has my brain really going. I guess it was the March book? So either it wasn't available for the Kindle then, or I was too busy having a baby to look at the titles that month.

I'm looking forward to CryoBurn later in the month. I'd like to tackle Connie Willis Blackout and All Clear but I think I'll wait until winter for those two tomes.
The rest of my October reading can be found on my current-month shelf.
