Ariana | 53 comments I'm just remembering a snippet of this book:

The book had a Oregon trail era feel to it, I believe. The main character goes to visit her friend Yolanda. Yolanda has a lot of brothers who are named alphabetically and with Biblical names. Yolanda and this girl are not allowed to eat before Yolanda's brothers and father, even though the main character is a guest.

This is probably a Christian book published before 2001.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? (which also takes place in Oregon)

and which was based on a story by Stephen Vincent Benet ("The Sobbin' Women") though the boys weren't alphabetically named in the story

Cheryl (cherylllr) I remember a children's book with alphabetically named children, but nothing more about it...

The OP's profile says she's still active on GR, so we'll see.

Ariana, was this written for children, do you think?

message 5: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments The only other books I could think of with alphabetical children were Eleven Kids, No Pets and the sequel by Ann M Martin. But its boys and girls and didn't seem to match her description otherwise.

The topic title made me think of If You Only Knew, because the main character's siblings are named like that, but after reading the actual thread this book doesn't match what they are looking for either.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments I messaged her.

message 8: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 53 comments No, it wasn't 7 Brides for 7 Brothers or a similar story. It was more in the style of an Inspirational Fiction work. I remember that the 'mistreatment' of the main character and her friend Yolanda by forcing them to eat last was something that the main character disagreed with.

message 9: by SparksofEmber (new)

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Hmm, you probably don't remember but why would a family with a ton of boys named bible names give their daughter the name Yolanda?

message 10: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 53 comments Hahaha, I remember that Yolanda explained that they were alphabetical "except for us girls".

Was this children's, YA, or adult fiction?

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) unfortunately this is apparently abandoned

message 14: by Ariana (new)

Ariana | 53 comments It was a Christian Fiction book, so I suppose it was adult, but an easy reading level nonetheless.

We can keep the thread alive as long as you're interested in finding the book. Threads can go on forever, or until GR goes out of business, whichever comes first.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Maybe Heartbreak Trail or another in the series or by the author?

https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/... for a list of many of them.

And another: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...

Rainbowheart | 28640 comments My first thought when I saw your header was Ten Kids, No Pets, but that's way too modern.

If you think it might have been Christian, there are plenty of pioneer and frontier books with a religious focus. Maybe one from the Sadie Rose series?
