Barbora | 2 comments (I'll just hop into an introduction of myself as I assume that was the original purpose haha)

I'm an 18-year-old girl from Slovakia currently studying Japanese and Business in Denmark. Back home I have two cats, two dogs, a bunny, and six fish. Reading fantasy books is one of my greatest passions, as is learning languages and playing PC games. I also enjoy hiking and spending time in the nature in general.
I believe in faeries and aliens! Among a number of other beings, that is~

Favorite book: The Name of the Wind. Yes. Can't help it.
Favorite games: Dragon Age, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape: Torment, Warcraft 3, Star Wars: KOTOR... (yes, BioWare games make me happy)
Last movie I watched: no idea, to be quite honest. I remember watching a few episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog, not sure if that counts, though

I see that you're all a bunch of cool people, so I'm happy I joined this group o.o/

Matt Taylor | 23 comments Hey guys thought I should introduce myself as I've been hanging around and posting for a while now.
I'm 37 and and yacht delivery skipper/barman when not at sea. I read virtually anything although fantasy then scifi top my list. I'm also a big gamer when not at sea.
As for favourites they probably change every time I think about it so I'll go top three :)
Books, The Legend of Huma (Dragonlance Legends1 First book I ever read voluntarily and must of read a dozen times over the years much like an old friend now)
American Gods by Neil Gaiman dark and twisty and I think Gaiman at his best
And obviously KKC not since I read Game of Thrones have I raved to my largely uninterested friends so much and for my money I think KKC is written not necessarily better but more beautifully!
Really trying to stop myself now but a nod to, the Eddings espicially for the Elienium ( for D&D players see how to play your paladins here), Stephen Donaldsons Gap series for some truly dark scifi and lastly Robert Jordan, Terry Pratchet, Brandon Sanderson, Douglas Adams, William Gibson............
TV, Fringe regularly blows my mind, Just got round to watching Prison Break loved that, and I just have to say Farscape (see Crackers Don't Matter) would of said SG1 but they just couldn't leave it! Can't really say Marvels Agents of Shield yet as feel J.W. Hasn't really hit his stride yet but it shows promise!
Games, Gave up COD for Planet Side 2 really like the open more epic style,
Skyrim is Ace (and the Fallout/New Vegas) and just got Baldurs Gate on my IPad enjoying playing through it again a lot. Nearly forgot Borderlands 2 awesome fun.
Movies, pretty much any of the marvel offerings with notable excptions, LotR, Dune ( I may be in a minority but I think it's just stunning), Blade Runner and The Dish (fab little film about the Aussie radio telescope team during the moon landing)
Other than that I love being outdoors and whether it be sailing, diving, walking, skiing or sitting in a pub beer garden feeding the puppy ( my 4 year old springer spaniel Jet) crisps under the table.
I think that covers it for now other than to say I glad to have found you guys.

Bettina (bettinakb) | 1 comments I am a 45 year old used-to-be-Architect now HR Manager/Building Manager/Admin Manager get-my-fingers-into-every-pie Melbourne, Australian. I'm engaged to an 64 year old man who hasn't discovered how to act more wizened than a 10 year old boy. We have George-ous the dog and I get in trouble if I don't bring him to work.

Yes I fess I started with Tolkien, progressed through Mary Gentle SF (check out her Orthe series for world building) and have devoured Patrick's Kingkiller Chronicles, both written and audio versions (get your ears on the Rupert Degas recording).

Favourite Video Game: Used to be Age of Empires. Now no time.
Favourite TV Show: Game of Thrones/True Blood
Favourite Book: Wise Man's Fear
Favourite Movie: The Lives of Others/Burnt by the Sun (nothing like a life/love affirming but depressing eastern European movie)
Last Movie I Saw: Jasmine
Last Book I read: re-read (listened to) Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos

I've just discovered I've lived my life out of believing "life's not fair, I don't know if I can do this, I'm hopeless" which is hilarious...now. Especially how often that sucker shows up! When I'm stuck in it, not so amusing.

Thrilled that I managed to meet Pat in Chicago last year at a book reading.
Thanks Pat for the books, the beard and the heart.

Nice to meet you all.

@Matt - also enjoy a bit of Planetside. I agree, better than COD. I've pretty much given up on console. Decided it's all PC from here on out.

message 106: by Vaewyn (new)

Vaewyn | 2 comments Hey there!
I am a 21 year old young woman, and I am pretty terrible at introductions.
I am a reader and a gamer, with no real set profession yet, probably because I spent my school years playing elder scrolls and reading fantasy book. But I am thinking I might go into Veterinary Nursing.
Currently I work in a call centre and get verbally abused for a living, but i come home to my significant other at night so that's okay. I have dreams of writing and illustrating but not the attention span to fulfill them.
I only just joined goodreads because my recent change in lifestyle, moving to a whole new place with my boyfriend, has left me feeling a little bit lacking in people who are like minded. SO here I am, I hope you guys will accept me, you already share an interest with some of the greatest books I have ever read, so I figured thats a good start.
This is also the first time I do not have a cat, so I am going insane.
Not sure where to go from here but I am hoping that this will become a place for me to come and socialize and share my interests without being call a hermit or a recluse.

I am currently reading the Shadows Heart, which is the last of the Risen Sun trilogy by K.J Taylor and I am really enjoying it.
Last movie i watched was Captain America, the Winter Soldier, which came out yesterday.
I could go into gaming but i probably wouldn't shut up about it, but you should know i WAS a pc gamer but now do not have a functional gaming pc, i have receded to wiiu and xbox until I can justify buying another one, which is hard to do when you want to buy a house.
And I could go into favorites but I find doing that an emotionally grappling situation where making choices is too god damned hard.

My only other child is my golden lab Nala! I am custodian for my day job, at night I am an entrepreneur, and I am a freak for reading fantasy books. I was unaware that I was a "Rothfussian" until just today!
I feel that I am among friends though!
I really like the name of the wind and wise mans fears so I though hey let me join this group!

Andrea Fitch (skinnypigannie) | 3 comments I've been struggling for about a month to finish reading the print versions of these novels at the same pace as my friend and sharer of my first name, Ions, listened to them for his... 6th time?

Anyway it's maddeningly relieving to finally be able to come on here and discuss things with more than just him. In the last few days he ferried a theory here that I originated and he fleshed out, about the in-universe numerology of the numbers 3 and 7, but it's nice to be here and able to post on my own behalf, lol.

I'm a 22 year old father from San Francisco, California. Aspiring writer, musician, all that artsy jazz.

My favorite book is Cromm by Kenneth C Flint.
My favorite series is the dragonriders of pern. Imagine my glee when Pat mentioned the series in the acknowledgement of NOTW!
favorite movie is memento. Ions will chastise me for saying so, but I don't care.

Suffice to say I plan to be here a lot in the next few months!

message 110: by Marco (last edited Jul 13, 2014 03:33PM) (new)

Marco Hi! I'm a relatively new member of this group. I joined last year, but I didn't post anything until now. I hope to be a welcome and interesting addition to the discussions!

I'm really hopeless when writing about myself, so I'll probably sound either too boasful, too self pitying or both, so please bear with me for a time.

I'm a 19 year old kid from Italy, currently studying Chemistry and dreaming of an interesting research job, even though I'll probably have to live abroad to find one.
I am a basketball lover, so I'm going to attend the World Cup in September and enjoy a couple of days in Barcelona with a childhood friend.
Other than that, I could be described as a nerd. You know the stereotype: that shy fellow, intelligent to a fault, who's not good with relationships in general and girls in particular, selective gamer and bookworm who reads mostly mangas and fantasy novels.
Until high school, I had some friends who had mentalities akin to mine. Sadly no one had my same passion for Chemistry and now I find myself in a rather boring environment, as far as university is concerned.
This brings me to my greatest regret/only awesome thing that happened in my life so far:
I applied to study at Oxford University and almost made it through the final cut. From what I have seen of my fellow applicants, I would have had a great time. Alas, Chtulhu had other plans for me, so who knows what His wisdom might bring in my future.

As for books, I don't have a favourite, I organize them in tiers. So, here's what Tier 1 looks like as of now:

Everything / John Ronald Reuel Tolkien
Malazan Book Of The Fallen/ Steven Erikson
The Kingkiller Chronicle/ Patrick Rothfuss
The Millennium Trilogy/ Stieg Larsson
The Stormlight Archive/ Brandon Sanderson
A Song Of Ice And Fire/ George R.R. Martin
The Wheel Of Time/ Robert Jordan
American Gods/ Neil Gaiman
A Raven's Shadow/ Anthony Ryan
The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy/ Douglas Adams

message 112: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Frey | 6 comments HI , I am a stay ay home mom of 3...ages 8,7 &4! I have been reading since I can remember, I think the 1st fantasy book I ever read was "The Phantom Tollbooth" but I somehow recall one with magic buttons before that.
As a kid I always read...we moved a lot & as a member of a typical dysfunctional family it was my escape. In highschool I was obsessed with Steven King , Dean Koontz, & pretty much anything that would scare me so much I had to watch cartoons before bed. then a friend of mine gave me "Dune" to read & I was hooked on scifi/fantasy. In my 1st year of college I read Robert Jordan's 1st wheel of time book & followed, waited mourned and waited some more to finish the series. That was/is my favorite series ever! I will continue to reread it through the rest of my life! After finishing the final volume I was desperate to find something else to read...& after rereading my entire bookshelf, I found this website & a recommendation for Name of the Wind. I think Patrick Rothfuss is a very talented writer & cannot wait to read more.
As I've said reading is my escape, be it from the mundane ("mommy I need...fill in the blank) or the de-stresser (ie: potty-training) Or from this world. I prefer fantasy because this world & all of it's problems gets overwhelming sometimes & I need to leave it for awhile, if only so I can get up in the morning with hope for a new day & courage to raise my children with that hope ( & hopefully a love of reading!)
The book I am currently re-reading is "The Dagger of Adendigaeth" by Melissa McPhail, another new author whom I also think is fantastic!
last game I played was probably "hide & seek " (with my 4yr old!)
I don't know what many of the abbreviations you guys use are (did I mention I am 42 & seriously lacking in tech savviness???) But I love playing epic-mickey on wii with my 8yr old
favorite books:
HUGE LIST
Robert Jordan Wheel of Time
Lord of the Rings(obvious)
Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series
L.E.Modesitt Jr. Imagers series and chaos series
George RR Martin Game of Thrones (of which I feel I must say I became a fan of YEARS before the HBO series that I resent a bit for I think that is why it is taking FOREVER for the next book to be out)
David (& Leigh) Eddings The Belgariad & the Mallorean
well I could go on& on (as I have ...call it a lack of adult conversation ;-) but needless to say , I read A LOT!! glad to join a group that seems to as well & hopefully I didn't bore you too much with my story of stories!!

Dan | 1 comments I'm Dan - new member to the group.

Two kids, a wife, three dogs. At least one of these groups is trainable, I'm quite certain of it.

Reading and writing encompass much of my time. I'm a meteorologist, and yes I've chased my share of tornadoes.

The first two Kingkiller books are two of the best fantasy novels I have ever encountered. Besides Tolkien and Jordan's early Wheel of Time novels, I can't think of any fantasy which quite meets the level of Rothfuss.

The two things which stood out most to me were -
1) The characters are so well-developed, and reflect the character flaws we encounter throughout our lives

2) The almost musical, poetic quality of the writing. As a fellow writer, I have to say that I was both floored and inspired reading Rothfuss' prose. Amazing.

Can't wait for the trilogy finale. Hope to get to know all of you better over the years!

Eva | 3 comments Hi, I'm Eva from Austria (not Australia, just to clarify), 18 years old. I happily share a house with my parents and many ( 2 - 14, depending how one counts) siblings, and a few pets. I read a lot. When I was 8 years old, my mother limited my reading to one book a day. It didn't work. Not being allowed to read was an often used punishment.
My first fantasy books were Momo and The NeverEnding Story, and than, of course, Harry Potter.
Two of my sisters gave me The Wise Mans Fear as a Birthday Present one year ago, and there was no turning back. I'm desperately waiting for Doors of Stone.
My hobbies are reading, astronomy, painting, going for walks with my dogs, solving puzzles and traveling.

My current favourite book is The Wise Man's Fear

Grace A (20grace24) | 7 comments I'm 13, and working on getting the credentials to skip a year of high school.
When I was little I used to get up at four am and read until seven. Then I started reading too quickly to get through three hours with only a single book.
I first read The Name Of the Wind in the last week of sixth grade and The Wise Man's Fear a week or so later.
They gave me a reason for living.
Why? Because I love Kvothe. I love who he is and isn't. And that's enough for me.

message 123: by Hayden (new)

Hayden Johansen (Hayd) | 72 comments I'm 20, I live in rural Alaska, and I ride my pet polar bear from my igloo to the Russian border every year.

All jokes aside, I come from two recovering consumtion addicts who have passed down the traits of addiction to me; however, where their addiction is more of a shapers idea of fune - give in to all desires and use them to shape their path. I have luckily built my addiction around one of the most aspired fantasy books in the genre. KKC changed my perception of quality when reading the first 100 pages of any up an coming books in the genre..

Outside of books I was born and raised a commercial fisherman. 15/20 years of my life I've devoted to fishing and I cherish the thought that I am a part of an ancient tradition that has fed the lives of men and women since the beginning of man....Also there is the +/-10g paycheck after 2 months of work so I guess that's cool too. "No man is brave, that has never fished in the Alaskan Sea" - paraphrased Teccam's theophany.

I stand fast as a Die hard Kvothe fan. I believe no quality can be lost from the series through overlonging production timing. The book's delivery is a message from pat himself. The one flaw Kvothe struggles with is Patience. Just as Luke Skywalker did, Kvothe rushes into things with his newfound power and is slowing being pulled to his (true)father's side of the philosophical spectrum of knowing/shaping. If we are to trust that pat has learned much in the 17 years it took to produce this book, we can trust he is teaching each reader the same patience that Ben, Elodin, Vachet, Arliden, and Lorren repeatedly try to teach Kvothe. "A good story takes time" - Kote.. Be patience and let the Caesura between book 2 and 3 ensnare you like a pillar of white flame.

Hannah | thebookwormsfeast (thebookwormsfeast) | 3 comments Hi there!

Well, what to write. I’m Hannah. A 21 year old living in the UK, working in IT, but mainly trudging through life without the least idea with what to do with it.

I discovered books only a few years ago - well discovered I liked them, and stumbled across NOTW last month. I have never enjoyed a book so much! I’ve then, as you can tell, subsequently stumbled onto this group. From what I have read so far, I have never seen so many people with the same interests and opinions as me – and there is a lot for me to read yet (I’m a bit late to the party, so to speak).

I guess I’ll round up how many of you have;

Favourite Book: Name of the Wind and Wise Man’s Fear (I can’t choose).
Favourite Game: A hard question, but lately Fallout 4. The Elder Scrolls Games will always be some of my favourites though.
Favourite Movie: Equally as difficult, perhaps The Grand Budapest Hotel. Wes Anderson’s films are brilliant, if not a bit odd at first.

Dustin | 5 comments Hello, my fellow Rothfussians!

I hope you all are well and enjoying your current reads.:)

Anyway, I'm a little late to the Kingkiller Chronicles brigade, but better late than never, eh? There's less of a wait for the third book, at least. Speaking of Rothfuss, I'm actually reading The Name of The Wind currently, and I'm really enjoying it. I have a long way to go, though, as I'm at Chapter 26.

My reading tastes are quite eccentric. If it piques my interest, I'll pretty much read anything except erotica and romance. No offense to anyone who likes these genres, they're just not for me.

I'm passionate about writing and the Arts in general. I love to pain and draw, and I've wanted to learn pottery for years. I'm thinking of taking some classes, actually.

I'm thirty-six, the father of a three and a half year old son (gotta love toddlers!) as well as a stepfather to two boys, ages fifteen and almost twenty-one. My wife and I will celebrate six years in August.

Lovely to meet you all!

message 131: by Beatriz (new)

Beatriz | 1 comments Hi!! *waves shyly from a corner* I just got here!
To this group I mean. I've been in goodreads for about three years, I had just never stumbled across this group before. Also, I have read Patrick's books about three years ago. This might not seem like a lot, but it is since in almost 18, it's about a sixth of my life (I would give the exact number but it's late, maybe I'll do it later). I don't know if anyone will read this and I have school tomorrow, but I'll write this anyway.
So, my story (it's a short one don't worry):
My name is Beatriz, I'm 17 almost 18! And I was born in a hospital slightly below the middle of Portugal in Beja. I moved to Algarve when I was 4 and I've lived here ever since. Although, im leaving in October to go to college. My fingers are crossed for St. Andrews, let's see.
I'm a good student, the best in my school... that's my thing. I'm not one of those people who study every second, no.. actually I find studying a very tedious task most of the time, because I can't choose what I study, and sometimes I don't like it. Well... to be honest, I like everything I learn, because I like just the act of learning, but studying is boring. Isn't that like an universal truth? The sun is a star! I was born! Studying is boring! It sounds about right...
People say I'm too nice, and I never know if they mean it as a compliment or not.
I love reading!! I'll tell you a secret: I'm bored most of the time. People bore me, routine bores me.... it's all just very equal everyday. And so, to escape this boredom that is my life, I read. Sure! I could change my life and make it less boring! And I am doing that! But when you are not even 18, it's not an easy task, it's not like I can really choose to move out right now.. but yeah, reading is a way for me to live new lives, meet new worlds, be excited!! And my fav author is (come on, you can guess it) .... you got it!! Patrick Rothfuss! His books are fantastic. I can't put into words how I feel about them. To be true, it freaks me out sometimes, because I didnt know you could love a story so much. But then... it's not just a story... it is much more than that for me now. It's a place where I find comfort. I do something funny, well, not funny like laughing... you might breathe a tiny little bit harder through your nose while you read this funny, this is the type of funny the thing I do is (I'm sorry for my English... not first language) so, I did this for the first time, when I had a chemistry test and I was freaking out: tears, despair, frantic reading and writing... the whole thing. I needed to calm down so I just opened the book in a random page and guess what? It was perfect! That part helped me calm down!! It was the part where Fela made the ring of stone, she was overthinking and when she calmed down she did it!! So from that day on, whenever I'm freaking out, I grab one of his books and do this. So far, it always helped. So yeah... his books are really important to me. I could write and write and write about them but I won't (even though you deserve it Patrick!! But sometimes I'm selfish).
I don't know if you are wondering, but I'm studying theoretical physics in college!! I know!! Very interesting!! Im not being sarcastic or anything! I really really love this. Im soo curious. And I want to know everything about the universe.
I am not really interested in the things that are closed to me to be honest. Sure, the car is very fascinating and it's amazing how someone made it work, but look!! A supernova!! Sure, electricity is essential for us, but, omg, have you thought about how the photons travel all this distance!?! Have you thought about time and how it's the weirdest thing?? Like, what is it? Why does it pass? Does it really pass?
This is my mind. All the time. And I love it. The universe is beautiful, and I want to uncover its mysteries.
Oh god, I'm of topic again, so: Beatriz, 18, books, physics, college.. that's about it I think.
Oh!! I forgot! My second career dream is o open a cupcake/icecream shop that only opens after 5 pm. Im not kidding, I have a theme and flavours and lots of things planned! It would be amazing. Also, I love writing!! It's fascinating how sometimes, you are so into a story, that it kind of comes to life! You don't have to think much, your hand just moves and you see it unfold! Its beautiful.
I know I said it would be small... Sorry, but hey! I did the math! I've known pat's books for approximately 16,90% of my life! (I couldn't not do it).
I'll leave you with my favourite quote, I hope to be like this one day:
"It was wise enough to know itself, and brave enough to be itself, and wild enough to change itself while somehow staying altogether true."

message 132: by Shantal (new)

Shantal Murillo | 2 comments Hello,

I created this account in Goodreads so I could join a group of the Kingkiller Chronicles. I needed to be among people who understood my love for the series, people with whom I shared something, a special bond, people I will never meet.

My story, as any story, is full of disappointing pits, great oceans of sorrows and amazing heights of joy. I will not spend words and words trying to convince you all that my story is something special, something you never heard before. It is not. It is the all normal life of a simple no-one. Instead I will tell you my defining characteristic...

I do not like knitting, my mind lacks the patience. But I've been knitting a mask all my life. Every hour of my very normal life has been a stitch on the overall complex design of my mask. Soon enough, when I discover how mean people can be, I started to use iron thread. And so my mask became as resilient and unbreakable as a diamond. Somewhere along the line I let others to put threats on my mask, and then I cover those threat with my own until I could not recognize what was my doing and what was not. Then in high-school I started learning marcial art, because I needed to be strong to carry my heavy mask around. Because I was not planning to let it go. My mask was my identity.

Now I hate my mask. It is not me, but I can't really be sure of that, can I? My mask is, in many ways, my life's work, my most valuable possession, my biggest accomplishment.

To all of you dear strangers, who for some reason read this far: I don't need to use my mask in here. We have one thing in common you and I... we love Pat's story. It is a pleasure to meet you. Know that behind this digital persona is me, naked, without a mask because that is just how Internet work, I think.

Anyway... Hello

My life must look quite perfect from the outside though.
I go to a really good university where I study mathematics.
I don't know what I'm doing it for, what I'm going to do later. But I like it and I guess that's reason enough. (The funny thing is, if a philosophy student sais the same thing people smile and don't take them serious. But everyone seems to think mathematics is a serious thing to study.)
I have some good friends and a wonderful family. I have someone to share secrets with.

But still there are days where I feel hollow. It takes me a long time to get to know someone, to like and trust them. Some days I realize that there are strangers I will never really get to know, not because I don't meet them, but because I can't connect to them. Because I'm shy. An introvert, living in her own world.

I'd love to be like Auri. Silent. Tending to the world. Doing what needs to be done, without leaving to many traces. On the other hand, I want to burn like the sun. I want to change the world. I want to be fair and sincere and hearty.
But this is not about who I want to be. It's about who I am. Who I think I am. But it's hard to explain for I'm unlike anyone else, just like everyone else. If that makes sense to you :)

the.dustyarchive | 1 comments Hello, my name is Dustin, and I live in Canada! I am a 21 year old microbiology student with dreams of becoming a forensic pathologist. I am a huge science nerd, as well as a book and journal nerd. I love writing in journals and I also make my own journals too!

I have always wanted to write a book and I have one slowly coming a long, but university takes a big chunk of my time and I only have time to read.

I love to read fantasy! That has been my long time favourite genre, but recently I have been reading more and more thriller and horror. I have found my love for Stephen King, who does a wonderful job of mixing fantasy with horror!

I read The Name of the Wind and it instantly was my favourite book. After I finished reading it I was in too much awe that I couldn’t do anything else. My friends, family, and especially my fiancé grew so tired of hearing how phenomenal this book is.

Favourite book: The Name of the Wind

Favourite Authour: Stephen King and J. K. Rowling

Favourite series: Kingkiller, Harry Potter, and Throne of Glass

Thank you for listening to me ramble!

Raul Moran (raulm09) | 2 comments Hi everyone! My name is Raul and I’m 21 years old. I live in Mexico (Guadalajara City) and I study civil engineering.

I discovered the name of the wind by searching names of books in 9GAG. I was reading a sample from amazon when I decided to buy it. One of the best decisions I’ve made!!
Thanks to his book I discovered tons of great books too.
For example, I’m currently reading the wheel of time saga (almost finishing the fires of heaven).

Every time I’m on a library I try to write down names of books I’ll love to read, unfortunately there aren’t many -good- options in fantasy, at least in Mexico. So sometimes it takes me a while to discover great books.

So, is someone can give me any recommendations that will be awesome :) (As you may notice Spanish is my first language but I can read English books too)

Sorry if I had any misspelling, even though I have been learning English for some years, I need to practice more :)

Greetings to everyone!!
