Paula | 1001 comments Yes, it's that time again!

I was delaying this a bit while we try to find new moderators, but don't want to delay anymore because we need to do nominations, then post the poll, and perhaps do a run-off. That doesn't leave much time for people to procure the book if I procrastinate much longer!

As with last time, the nomination can be either true Victorian (written between 1837-1901 by anyone anywhere), neo-Victorian (written after 1901 but based primarily within the Victorian era) or non-fiction Victorian (written anytime, but based on any topic, or set of topics, during the Victorian era).

Please only nominate one book and be sure to list which category your book falls under; True Victorian, Neo-Victorian, or Non-fiction.

Note: This is one book total, not one book per category. Should you nominate more than one book, only the first book mentioned will move into the polls.

Happy nominating!

Paula | 1001 comments Look at me changing my mind in two minutes! I said previously that if you nominate the winning book, you "may" be asked to lead the discussion.

I am going to ammend that to:
"If you nominate a book, you will be required to lead the discussion." I hope that doesn't stop anyone from nominating - as you can see from the "Dracula" discussion, the leader doesn't need to do anything fancy. Feel free to send me a PM with any questions!

Silver True Victorian

The Moonstone byWilkie Collins

message 4: by Linda2 (last edited Sep 22, 2010 06:43PM) (new)

Linda2 I don't have time to moderate, as I own 2 businesses, so you are discouraging my nomination. This was an unwise decision on your part.

message 5: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1001 comments Rochelle - while I respect everyone's opinion, please be respectful to me in return.

Everyman | 2507 comments Rochelle wrote: "I don't have time to moderate, as I own 2 businesses, so you are discouraging my nomination. This was an unwise decision on your part."

I'm sure that Paula and Boof have lives just as busy as yours, yet they have found time to moderate many discussions here, and to set a very high standard of moderation. Given their desire to move on to other priorities, I can well understand their decision to use this method to relieve themselves of some of their burden. I think under the circumstances it's a perfectly reasonable position to take.

That said, I also understand your choice not to nominate a book. Given your life situation, that is the best choice for you, just as Paula and Boof's decision is the best choice for them.

For myself, I am sort of in your position. I have my own group here for which I moderate discussions, which given my style of moderating (which is considerably more hands on than that followed here) is all I'm able to take on. So I will have to choose not to nominate a book. I certainly don't resent the situation or think it's unreasonable. We all, as we are entitled to, make the choices for our lives that fit our needs at any given time.

I am very grateful to Paula and Boof for all the work they put into making this group such a success. I'm sorry to see them go, but I certainly understand and respect their decision. And whether others here who have no idea how much work they have put into moderating this group may not understand their decision, I hope we can all respect it and appreciate the work they have done for us, all unpaid and frequently unthanked.

message 7: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1001 comments Thank you, Everyman, for the very kind words and your opinion :)

If we run into an issue where only one or two people are willing to lead a discussion, or if it has a significant impact on the nominations, I hope we can hear about that in a constructive manner. We can always make changes based on the group's feedback!

I just know that I am personally heading into the busiest time of year for work, and trying to finalize wedding plans for January, so I'm not able to lead a discussion. With Boof also stepping down, that meant that we wouldn't have a discussion leader. Perhaps I should have been more open about the reason for requiring that the nominator lead the discussion.

Thank you for understanding!

message 8: by Jamie (last edited Sep 22, 2010 09:16PM) (new)

Jamie (jaymers8413) I was totally going to nominate the Moonstone so I second it! I I can help with moderating if it wins and Silver needs help. Not that I would be great at it haha! I feel it is time for me to read another Collins book.

message 9: by Gary (new)

Gary | 2 comments If your guide lines of "anyone anywhere" are taken literally, am I allowed to nominate Hunger-Knut Hamsun?

message 10: by Wendy (new)

Wendy I nominate Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy -- True Victorian:)

So do I, therefore I second this book too.

....ooh dear, I really love the group (even tho I'm a total lurker) and admire those who do moderate discussions, but given health reasons, I can't. (Just to add another data point.)

Kin (kinczyta) Trollope's The Way We Live Now

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Gary wrote: "If your guide lines of "anyone anywhere" are taken literally, am I allowed to nominate Hunger-Knut Hamsun?"

Gary, yes absolutely! I am dying to read something by Hamsun.

For anyone who hasn't heard of Hamsun he was a Norwegian author who wrote during the Victorian era and was very popular.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Jamie wrote: "I was totally going to nominate the Moonstone so I second it! I I can help with moderating if it wins and Silver needs help. Not that I would be great at it haha! I feel it is time for me to read a..."

Me too! I'm ready for another Collins soon.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments So far we have:

The Moonstone - Wilkie Collins
Hunger - Knut Hamsun
Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy
North and South - Elizabeth Gaskell
The Way We Live Now - Anthony Trollope

Some great books there to chose from but nominations are still open for adding others.

Thank you Everyman for your kind words ☺

message 21: by Marialyce (last edited Sep 23, 2010 04:10AM) (new)

Marialyce I nominate Silas Marner. (true Victorian) ....and thank you both, Paula and Boof for a fantastic job of being gracious, wonderful moderators.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments kyrn wrote: "Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy (true Victorian)"

Hi Kyrn, we actually read Tess as a group a couple of months ago (about March time, I believe). The discussions for this book are still open in the previous reads thread if you want to read and join in ☺

Do you want to nominate another book instead?

Carolyn (carolynrose3) Bleak House by Charles Dickens

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Sarah wrote: "Remarkable Creatures - Tracy Chevalier

Hi Sarah, while I absolutely adored this book and would LOVE to discuss it as a group read, it was actually set in the regency period, rather than Victorian. Most of the book takes place in the 1820's so I'm afraid that we can't include it in the nominations. If you do read it, let me know though - would love to chat with you about it.

Do you want to nominate anything else? ☺

message 27: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 1418 comments Sorry, I didn't realize. I was confused by some of the online descriptions of the book. (I hope to get round to it this winter anyways, so until then..) I will see if I had anything else of the period in my TBR list. Thanks Boof.

message 28: by Derya (last edited Sep 23, 2010 10:18AM) (new)

Derya (vampirellaninguncesi) (True Victorian.)

I would like to nominate A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 604 comments I believe we read A Christmas Carol last December, didn't we?

message 30: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments Carolyn wrote: "Bleak House by Charles Dickens"

Ooh, as long as you're willing to moderate it, a great choice. (Of course, any Dickens novel is a great choice, but Bleak House more so than most.)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 604 comments Fabulous novel, Bleak House.

Unfortunately, I am unable to moderate a discussion. I didn't realize that a nomination required moderation of the discussion. I apologize if that disqualifies my nomination. It is a really great novel though! =)

message 33: by Derya (new)

Derya (vampirellaninguncesi) Susanna, I consider myself as a new member here, thus I've no idea, if you've read the book, which I suggested in my last post. Well, in any case, I could nominate another one! What about reading The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling?

By the way, North and South is a marvellous book.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 604 comments We haven't read The Jungle Books as a group, and it's certainly eligible.

message 35: by MjerrieT (last edited Sep 23, 2010 04:09PM) (new)

MjerrieT | 4 comments I would like to nominate the book "Peter Pan" by James M. Barrie because the story first appeared as a play. It has been modified with many sequals in film and writing that would make an interesting discussion for the group. Also, it is one of the free books that I got with my ereader.

Ok, what about Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad?

message 37: by Faith (last edited Sep 24, 2010 07:06AM) (new)

Faith (faithbw) I think The Way We Live Now would be such an awesome book to read.

I love North and South and IA with Blutiful that it is a marvelous book!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 604 comments Is Peter Pan early enough? I thought it was Edwardian.

message 39: by Kathy (new)

Kathy | 11 comments Susanna wrote: "Is Peter Pan early enough? I thought it was Edwardian."

That's correct; Peter Pan doesn't qualify.

message 40: by Bu (new)

Bu (bu72) Orley Farm by Trollope! True Victorian

Let's see if this amazing novel wins this time! I just got it in my mail :)

message 41: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 1418 comments Mods,

I didn't know if you wanted to keep Orley Farm on the nominations list, but we were already planning a side read to begin Oct 1. We can adapt according to your wishes.

message 42: by Julia (new)

Julia (jujulia) | 30 comments I'm seconding "Hunger" as I've just got this from Amazon and would love to discuss it with people here - a Trollope sounds interesing as well, on the other side, I've never read anything by him and he's generally unknown to me, so this would be rather exciting...

message 43: by Aura (new)

Aura Shirley by Charlotte Bronte

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Thanks for some great nominations, guys. The poll is now live at the bottom of the home page and will stay up until 5th Oct.

Happy voting!

Hi Sarah

Yes, we'll keep it on as it has been nominated. The side read can still go ahead but this way anyone who wants to read it as an official group read can vote for it.

Deb this book sounds great! I added it to my to read books. Since the nominations are over you should nominate it for the next group read! The poll is up for nov/dec and ends Oct 5th.

message 48: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 2507 comments So, now that the poll is closed, is the Moonstone the next book, or are you going to have a run-off?

message 49: by Malcolm (new)

Malcolm Esquire (MalcolmEsq) | 344 comments Hi, I would like to nominated thr True Victorian novel 'Uncle Silas' by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. I would be happy to moderate :o)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) | 736 comments Hi Malcolm, thank you for your nomination but unfortunatley you have missed the cut off for the next read. However, the poll for the December read is still open (at the bottom of the page) so please feel free to cast your vote if anything on the list takes your fancy. If not, then please do nominate again for the next read in the new year - I, for one, want to read Uncle Silas at some point.
