Katie | 50 comments 1. Which forum is your favorite one to lurk in?
The Next Best Bookclub. There are so many members so I just enjoy reading through posts and occasionally joining in on a game.

2. Which forum do you contribute to the most?
Right now, this one :)

3. Which forum are you still a member of that you never look at or contribute to?
There are a couple bc I had stopped coming to forums altogether for a while, mostly bc of health issues and not having a lot of time. Paranormal Romance would probably be the big group that I never go to at all.

1) If you could get one author to write the story of your life (dead or alive) who would you pick and why?

2) If you had the opportunity to become famous would you take it? Why or why not?

3) Name a book that you absolutely loved, but you feel like everyone else hated it.

message 52: by Mach (last edited May 28, 2011 03:06PM) (new)

Mach | 572 comments 1) I would have Fyodor Dostoyevsky write my life story, because he is probably one of the best authors who ever lived. The complexity, prose, vokabulary and the sheer writing skills of his are unmatched. Over a century after he died his books are still captivating.
I wish i could speak russian so i could read his books in their original language.

2) It depends on what i am supposed to become famous in. If i were to become a famous artist of any kind, then i would take the opportunity. But i wouldn't want to be famous for something i am not proud of, just to be famous.

3) I liked the Thomas Covenant books, i didn't love them but i liked them. Alot of people hate them because of a certain scene, but i thought they were good books at the time i read them.

1) Your favorite book that is not Fantasy or Scifi or any of their subgenres?

2)If you were to become an author what kind of books would you write? What genre?

3)What is your favorite hobby besides reading books?

message 53: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments 1. Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
2. It kept on changing for me. It's a split between Dark Fiction and YA Fantasy, because I've always like books that portray the dark and complex side of psychology, and enjoy the whimsical fun children's fantasy books like the Harry Potter series.
3. Anything to do with art and creating, working with my hands, drawing, painting, fibers, ceramics, book making, etc., etc.

------------------------

If you were to make a book by hand:
1. How would you decorate or illustrate the cover?
2. What would it be about?
3. Who would you give it to?

message 54: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (chesan) | 32 comments 1. I would illustrate the cover with a collage of pictures and words.
2. Romantic poems
3. The person who would most appreciate it.

----------------------

1. What was the name of your childhood pet and what kind of animal was it?
2. Elvis or The Beatles?
3. What facet of your personality do feel is the most misunderstood?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments 1. first was Corky he was a Boston Terrier and not long after was Priscilla (named by my dad). A mixed breed Collie, she was killed young.

2. Elvis

3. I tend to be frank, to some I'm sure I seem a bit...blunt.

-------------------------------------------------

1. Favorite all time fiction book, any genre.

2. Favorite hobby or interest other than reading.

3. The career or calling you believe you missed. In other words, what do you think/feel you should have been or should be doing if you could go back and make the decisions knowing what you do now?

message 56: by Katie (new)

Katie | 50 comments 1. Favorite all time fiction book, any genre.
It has to be Pride and Prejudice. I first read it when I was in middle school and I completely fell in love with Lizzy and Mr. Darcy both. I believed I was Lizzy for so long. Still waiting on my own Mr. Darcy haha

2. Favorite hobby or interest other than reading.
I love hiking with my dogs. I have a golden retriever and a toy poodle and they are just so much fun to go places with. We have a lot of parks near my house so when the weathers good I'm always hiking on trails with my pups.

3. The career or calling you believe you missed. In other words, what do you think/feel you should have been or should be doing if you could go back and make the decisions knowing what you do now?
I wish I had pursued singing as a career. I have a pretty decent voice and I could have gone to New York when I was younger and tried out for shows but I convinced my mom not to. Who knows if I would have gotten anything - there are a billion talented people out there. But I do regret that decision. If I had had more ambition maybe I'd be on stage somewhere right now.
********************************
1) What is your favorite sports team and why? (If you don't like sports tell me why you don't :) )

2) Who is the celebrity that you absolutely can't stand?

3) What would it take for you to give up reading novels forever? Money? Fame? Power? A yacht in the Mediterranean? World Peace? A Segway? Be specific.

message 57: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments 1. Not a team, but my favorite sport is Ultimate Fighting. I used to be into the martial arts. I started off studying the traditional Korean martial art style called Kuk Sool Won, then moved on to Muay Thai boxing because it is more practical until I decided to become a mom. I like watching UFC fighting because it combines all the various ways to defeat an opponent, martial arts, boxing and wrestling. My favorite UFC fighter is Randy Couture.

2. Paris Hilton, if you can call her a celebrity. I can't stand empty celebrities with no entertainment value and no talent. And I hate spoiled rich people who add no value to the world, but who has so much, and takes up more air and resources than others. The business my stbx and I owned was upscale decorative. Our clients would include really wealthy people who would live like 2 people in a huge plot of land and mansion, with nothing better to do than obsess about how they're going to decorate their mansions with the finest stuff they can find, using the most expensive decorators. There is no justice in the world.

3. A list:
-A dystopia where there are no books and writers because they are banned. I don't think I would be one of those people who would be brave enough to go underground with a book if they are dangerous to my life and family.
-Brain damage where I can't comprehend a paragraph, and it stresses me out to try.
-I'm incarcerated and not allowed books or communicating with anybody who would be able to sneak a book in whatever format. Because you know I would try to figure out how to read a book via computer, movies, toilet paper, etc., as long as I'm not severely punished for it. I stop if the consequence is too severe.

2. What is the most magical-feeling event that happened to you?

3. Anybody who came into your life who you seemed destined to meet for some reason?

2. Lame as it makes me, the first time I kissed my first love was beyond all description. Magic comes as close to describing it as anything I suppose.

3. I think there's been a few people who I was destined to meet. I like to think that certain people are supposed to be in your life for certain moments. It doesn't mean they'll always be there but they each serve their purpose at a particular point.

1. If you were hosting a get together for Fantasy Aficianado members, what would you plan and where would the get together be held?

Why a midievil picnic with a duel of course!

2. If you could change any one thing about yourself physically, mentally or emotionally, what would it be and why?
I would definitely be able to handle my emotions better

3. What's the easiest way to put a big grin on your face?

One of my foster kids realizing things are stable and I am here for them...the other day one of them gave me a mushy card and I was good for days :)

Dang -I almost forgot my questions...

1. If you could morf into living the life of a fantasy character, who would you pick and why?

2. If you discovered your own 'sword in the stone' or similar unstoppable weapon, what cause would you take on and why?

3. If there was a single book you could pass out as a mandated read on Fantasy Afficionados, what would it be and why?

Lori (barfield) | 49 comments 1) Talea she's a thief and a gambler, she's also a swordswoman. And to top it off she's Jon-Tom woman. From the Spellsinger books.

2) Big overly fat government. Why you ask, because they need to be taken down & made to live like the rest of us little people!

3) That's easy Dragonlance chronicles, because there's so much good VS bad and a very fine line between the two sometimes. Besides the fact that Raistlin is the most bad assed mage ever!

1) If you could be any princess who would it be & why?

2) Who is your least favorite character & why?

3) What book have you wanted to read in fantasy & just haven't had the time?

message 61: by Legsoffury (last edited Mar 09, 2011 06:02AM) (new)

Legsoffury 1) how is it that I happen upon the princess question?
ummm...Perhaps Fiona from Nine Princes in Amber. She's cunning, powerful and...well-built. If I have to be a woman, I can at least be well-built.

2) Mr. Norrell. What a miser, all that knowledge, all for himself. Stingy, good for nothing,...

3) Some series finishers of Tad Williams. Unfortunately any of these would require that I re-read Tad Williams books, each of which are epics in their own right...ughhh. I cannot tolerate re-reading.

------------------------------------------

1) invisibility or super speed?
2) what piece of writing are you most ashamed/embarrassed of reading?
3) What piece of writing are you most proud of reading?

Ha! great questions below.

message 62: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments *You have an inner princess, that's why. You know you always wanted to be a princess. Time to grab that tiara.*

1. Super speed. I never have enough time in the day to finish anything.
2. I found a package of classic XXX erotica in eBooks online. Some of them dealt with incest. That was disturbing to peruse through.
3. I'm proud of most of them, but it would have to be the Time Life art series. It was my earliest source of comprehensive art history.

-------------------------

1. Would you rather live with an extremely neat and organized person, or a slob?
2. Have you ever hung around a forum because you like the people and not necessarily the genre of books.
3. Is your driving style similar to your sexual style?

Bill (billymac) | 20 comments 1) Neat and organized, but I doubt they'd live with me.

2) No, I hang around because I like the people and the genre.

3) Totally the opposite. I prefer to drive faster than slower, and I can get impatient at times.

-------------------------------------------------------

1) Country or city life?
2) Do you prefer to swim in a pool or in a lake/river/ocean?
3) Have you ever scuba dived or do you want to?

1. Country life all the way-I actually live right in between two Indian reservations...which is its own kind of odd.
As a young person I preferred the city and lived in Minneapolis.

2) Lake-Again, it's all because of living in Minnesota

3) I have gone snorkeling a lot but not scuba diving

Okay-my questions:

1. What fantasy character is closest to your own personality?

2. If you were able to choose a months read and get everyone to read it, what book would you want to pick?

3. Do you beleive cannibalism is wrong or do cannibals have special dietary rights ? ;)

1. I’m not sure, I would maybe say Elspeth from the Mage Winds trilogy. She’s tough but sweet and has a sharp tongue. O-o

2. I would say Kushiel's Dart, The Riddlemaster of Hed, or one of a number of books by Andre Norton (Maybe start them off with Witch World?). They are all series that I think people could benefit from reading but aren’t your typical fantasy novels.

3. I think eating the flesh of your own species is a good way to get mad cow disease. I’m just saying! Gross.

__________

1. Is there a book that you are shocked that other people haven’t read? (LotR doesn’t count, lol).
2. What fantasy character do you feel is TSTL?
3. Do you write and can we see any of your work? IF that’s not applicable, if you were to write a book, what would be the well known tropes you would avoid?

*TSTL = Too Stupid To Live, typically used in description of really stupid romance heroines.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

1. The "Gormenghast" books, by Mervyn Peake. Just as influential a novel as Conan the Barbarian or Lord of the Rings, but I never seem to meet people who have heard of it, let alone have actually read a book or two from the series.

2. I think a better question would be "which fantasy characters do I feel aren't TSTL?" It seems to the be genre norm to have main characters who are slightly brain damaged.

3. I do, and I have a short story on my Goodreads profile.

------------------

1. Have you ever played croquet?
2. If you had to read a fantasy book about either cooking or mathematics, both presuming that the techniques/formulas are different from Earth's, which would you choose and why?
3. Would you rather live in taiga or the savannah?

message 67: by Kelly (last edited Apr 09, 2011 10:05AM) (new)

2) Math! I love math and physics. Plus, new math would still be useful, and cooking from another planet, well, we wouldn't have the ingredients!
3) Hard choice. But since I already dwell in Beautiful British Columbia, I'd have to say Taiga!

Tracey (stewartry) 1. Tomato Rhapsody - it's about how the tomato came to Italy, and how Jews were treated in Renaissance Italy, and about food and love and farming. It's funny and moving and wonderful, and hasn't gotten a fair shake.
2. Elves. Not usually so flighty.
3. Just about anywhere. Usually curled up in bed.

2. Bella from Twilight. Don't know if that would be classified into fantasy but she's the first person I've ever wanted to maim horribly in a book
3. Whenever there is free time, though it is good to unwind from a long day with a good book.

Got a link for this, tDPG? I like Indie's hat too. I never wore hats until about a couple of years ago when I decided I wanted to avoid skin cancers and keep my ear-tips. I have a bunch from a bevy of ball-caps to my favorite an outback hat made of kangaroo leather.

2. Yes: I've seen a ghost in the house I lived in as a child. I saw it aged about 7/8 but didn't tell my mum until I was about 15. Mum said my sister described seeing exactly the same thing! It was more a deep shadow of a figure surrounded by slightly lighter air than sheet-over-head variety.

3. Following the theme... The story of the woman coming home and feeling like there is someone in the house. She rings her mum who says "leave now... don't do anything... don't even hang up the phone". When she reaches here mum's house her mum is waiting at the door, chalk-white. 1. Air conditioning. Cause holy shit life in a castle without air conditioning?! No, ma'am. Needless to say it would have to be some kind of self powering perpetually re-cooling air conditioner :)

2. High on a mountain, highly defendible position, natural source of water nearby. Built into the side of the mountain seems like a plus...lots of marble, three foot concrete front. Lots of vaulted ceilings inside, the most amazering library ever and a kitchen with a walkin freezer and no less than two viking ranges. Heaven :)

3. Vengeance. Revenge stories suit me best.

Lol thanks :) I grew up on old movies. My favorites were always Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin.
I'm going to be selfish and answer your questions, since no one else has jumped in.

1. Whales feeding in the wild. They'd sometimes have half their bodies out of the water and you could see the barnacles on their heads.

2. My feet. I just hate the way they look.

3. A month in the Irish countryside...horseback riding, singing and drinking in pubs, that kind of thing.

1. What is your all-time favorite movie?

2. What is your biggest pet peeve?

3. If you could trade places with any character in any book, who would it be?

My dad was 61 when I was born. I grew up on old movies :) And you're not being selfish by answering...answer all ya like! This place kinda slows down on the weekends anyways

1. Forrest Gump. He's my hero :)

2. I haaaaaaaate when someone repeats themselves to me. It's so condescending and absolutely makes my blood boil. Half the fist fights I've gotten into in my life have stemmed from that alone.

3. Dresden. I still get to live with all the joys of modern luxury (well non electronic ones) but I get magic to boot. Sweeeeeet.

1. What's your favorite comfort food?

2. What's your favorite personal moment of the current year?

3. Do you have any major goals in life? If so what?
