Nora Roberts - Tribute
Tribute by Nora Roberts

Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a long way from Hollywood. And that’s exactly how Cilla McGowan likes it.

Cilla, a former child star, has found a more satisfying life working with her hands to restore homes from floor to ceiling - and has come here to her grandmother's farmhouse, tools at her side, to rescue it from ruin. Sadly, no one had been able to save her grandmother, legendary Janet Hardy. An actress with a golden voice and a tumultuous life, Janet entertained glamorous guests and engaged in decadent affairs - but died of an overdose in this very house more than thirty years ago. To this day, Janet haunts Cilla's dreams. And during her waking hours, Cilla is haunted by her melodramatic, five-times-married mother, who carried on in the public spotlight and never gave her a chance at a normal childhood. By coming to the East Coast, rolling up her sleeves, and rehabbing this wreck of a house, Cilla intends to take a shot at finding some kind of normalcy for herself.

Cilla has her work cut out for her - the house, once a place of comfort and simple rural beauty, is long neglected, crumbling, the grounds chocked by weeds. Plunging into the project with gusto, she's almost too busy and exhausted to notice her neighbor, graphic novelist Ford Sawyer - but his lanky form, green eyes, and easy, unflappable humor (not to mention his delightfully ugly dog, Spock) are hard to ignore. Determined not to carry on the family tradition of ill-fated romances, Cilla steels herself against Ford's quirky charm, but she can't help indulging in a little fantasy.

But love and a peaceful life may not be in the cards for Cilla. In the house's cluttered attic, she has found a cache of unsigned letters, tied with a faded red ribbon, suggestion that Janet Hardy was pregnant when she died - and that the father of her child was a local married man. Cilla can't help but wonder what really happened all those years ago. The mystery only deepens with a series of cruel and intimidating acts and a frightening, violent assault. And if Cilla and Ford are unable to sort out who is targeting her and why, she may, like her world-famous grandmother, be cut down in the prime of her life.

Paula (paulainauckland) I have my copy (insert evil laugh) and I'm about half way through.

message 3: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulainauckland) well I finished - sat up last night to do so! My review is posted too.

And there's plenty of references to Lost, BTW, for the person that posted on the no spoilers thread.

My question is: recently I've had several people complain that they believe it's not Nora writing, but a series of ghost writers. They say this explains the lack of consistency in writing. I did say in my review that I felt in some ways that this is almost a re-write of the novel that was sent in Olympia National Park; with the creepy damages and the movie/tv ancestor links.

What do you think?

I haven't read it yet, but I did pick it up this afternoon.

...then I spent hours upon hours trying to sort out why my internet connection died.

But in general, I don't think Nora uses ghost writers. I think she has too much respect for the written word to ever do such a thing. I look at the similarities as as inevitable because of the number of books she's written.

Gina (ginrobi) | 40 comments Even though I usually despise spoilers, I was itching to check out what you all wrote. I won't be able to pick up Tribute until it comes out in MMP (can't afford hardcover). However, the subject of 'ghost writers' has me intrigued, to say the least. I know that she was writing this while busy with her son's wedding... could be maybe she was just a little too distracted between the wedding and the B&B while she was writing this... hmm, curiouser and curiouser...

I'm about 60 pages into the book so far...would be further if my Dad hadn't decided to fall and break his ankle last night :/

But so far I'm enjoying the book. I really like what I've see of the character of Ford to this point. He's rather amusing.

Off to read some more before I take a much needed nap.

Gina (ginrobi) | 40 comments Ouch! Hope your dad feels better soon! Been there, done that!

I've got about 50 pages to go (the world seems to be conspiring to keep me from finishing the book)...and I still don't know for sure who the bad guy is. I LOVE that. Nora's done a fantastic job of tossing me off the scent.

As soon as the cable guy leaves, I plan to finish.

Finally finished!

My review is posted here.

For anyone else who finished it, did you also enjoy trying to figure out who the bad guy was as much as I did?

message 10: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I am to the 2nd section of this book and it was hard for me to get there. I hope the last 2 sections pick up. Cilla and Ford so far are just ok. They remind me of Quinn and Cal from Blood Brothers.

message 11: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 3 comments I had part of the end figured out. I knew who she had the affair with but I didn't figure out the other part until there was a knock on the door.

I thought the book was ok. It took awhile for the action to start and there was a lot between each incident.

message 12: by Miss Kim (last edited Jul 28, 2008 01:02PM) (new)

Miss Kim (thatsmisskimtoyou) I finally finished this over the weekend. I don't know if I was busier or the book was longer... anyway... I reallly liked it. I had a feeling who the villian was about midway through, but then there was twist... I still have to post my review.

I totally pictured Ford as Sawyer from Lost. In her other book, Blue Dahlia, I also pictured the man as Sawyer. I think he is just soooo sexy.

As far as ghost writing, I don't think Nora would do that. I tend to agree with Isys, that she's written so many books, that there are bound to be similarities.

I was leaning one way for the antagonist, but I was never really sure. I kept wondering if perhaps her mother or the smarmy step-dad (#7 or #5 or whatever) was trying to chase her back to Hollywood. My over-active imagination even wondered a few times if perhaps the half-sister was super jealous of Cilla and trying to get rid of her.

So it wasn't until the very end that I could say 100% who the bad guy was.

message 14: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I still haven't finished this book, Cilla and Ford haven't even gotten it on yet. I don't know what it is, but I just can't get into it. Someone needs to just PM me the villian.

message 15: by Miss Kim (new)

Miss Kim (thatsmisskimtoyou) Tlaroland, it's gonna be a while before they get it on...

message 16: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulainauckland) PM you the villan?! That's cheating!
I think it was nice that they didn't "get it on" too early in the book (I just re-read that and it makes me sound old :( ). Normal life isn't like that when you find your partner. Is it?

message 17: by Teryl (new)

Teryl I didn't care that it took them a long time, I was using it as a reference so people would know about where I was in the book, second section before consumantion :)

Usually I don't cheat on stuff like that, but with this book, it is going to take me FOREVER to get to the end :)

message 18: by Megan (last edited Aug 11, 2008 10:12PM) (new)

Megan Pagano (megabean) | 5 comments Well, I finished the book! I really enjoyed it. I loved that she had a little of everything in it; romance, love, passion, family, problems, thrill, mystery. You get the idea.

I don't watch Lost, so I can't comment on Sawyer. However, I love her reference to Elaine about Ford's dancing. And she must be a Star Trek Fan...Spock! LOL

I figured out about Tom when Ford talked with his Granddad, but I didn't think it would turn out to be Cathy. Shocker!

message 19: by Cassidy (new)

Cassidy Savage (savagegy6) Ok, wow...that took forever to get through.
It was good in I liked the characters and the setting, there was just so much that I didn't care to read about, the house rehab. I get that she wanted you to really know about how the house was coming a long and feel that blood, sweat and tears kind of thing so when the personal attacks came on her property it was more effective...but man it was boring!

I don't know...for the most part I could have passed on reading this book. I'm so blah about it...disappointing.

That's just my take though, I'm sure lots of people loved it and wish I were one of them! :)

message 20: by April (new)

April (aprilc) | 5 comments I just finished Tribute this morning. As I said in my review, it was a challenge to get into... But once I did I was very into the plotline and was excited to try to figure out the "villian" before she was revealed!

I mentioned some things that I liked a lot in my review, but forgot to mention the following:

1) I liked that the male characters were "real" guys (at least in my opinion) -- Ford's comic writing and "nerd" background, the guys giving each other a hard time about women, bbq skills, and video games, Ford bringing "adult" movies to Steve during his recovery, Ford taking a moment to indulge in a "threesome" fantasy.

2) I liked all the references to pop culture - Star Trek, Seinfeld, Lost, Grand Theft Auto. This made the story so much more "real" (for lack of a better word) for me.

I think that's all for now!

Hope that you are all having a lovely fall!

April, I also liked that the male characters came across as very real. I LOVED Ford. He was a fantastic character and I thought Nora did a great job writing him.

message 22: by Teryl (new)

Teryl That is one of the things I like about Nora's heros, a lot of the time they are pretty normal.

message 23: by Emily (new)

Emily (imabrooks2) | 81 comments I love that all her Heros are MEN. they don't let themselves be pushed around but are willing to give into the women they love, however they stand up when they need to.

message 24: by Amar (new)

Amar | 134 comments Count me in as another BIG fan of Nora's heroes...love that they are real men and not just romance novel cutouts...i loved Ford in Tribute, he was funny, nerdy, yet sexy and definitely hero mat'l...loved the way Cilla sort of wore the pants in the relationship and he was sooo okay with it! I think he is one of my all time Nora heroes.

message 25: by Suzanne (last edited Mar 25, 2009 05:32PM) (new)

Suzanne | 13 comments I am REALLY not going to look at the Spoilers as I am reading this one now. I wanna read this before seeing the movie.
I love her descriptive writing. That is something that you can not put into the movies.

Season Gonzales (lilmami) | 27 comments I love this book its one of my new favorites lol i love ford he was my kind of man lol and i loved spock too he was too funny chasing his invisble cats sad that he's not in the movie

I thought Tribute was fantastic.
I really liked Cilla and Ford as a pair, very smoldering and sweet, and I liked that they didn't rush into bed. The only thing is Ford kept reminding me of MacAllister Booke from Three Sisters Island trilogy, a lot of similarities. The whodunit bad guy is such a shocker, I was totally caught off guard, and the ending is very well developed and not rushed.

The house rehab stuff got a little too HGTV or DIY Network, but it added to the setting and Cilla's motivation.

Really enjoyed it overall, and who wouldn't adrore Ford's goofy dog Spock.

message 28: by Amar (new)

Amar | 134 comments I think it's time for a reread with this book...loved Ford and Cilla!

message 29: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samswindle) | 68 comments I totally loved this book. Ford and Cilla were perfect together. I also loved the way Cilla reconnected with her father, stepmother, and half sister. The development of Cilla's relationship with her dad especially moved me. I'm such a daddy's girl!!!

message 30: by Amar (new)

Amar | 134 comments I loved how Ford drew cartoons of Cilla...so sweet! And of course looooved the dog!

message 31: by Cheryle (new)

Cheryle I enjoyed this book. I must be a total geek, but I'm surprised no one mentioned the resemblance of Cilla's grandmother to Judy Garland. Having read many bios on Judy, I found many aspects of Janet Hardy's life to be very similar to hers. I just loved Ford. Where can I find me a Ford?? Spock was great, too.

message 32: by Amar (new)

Amar | 134 comments Cheryle, as I was reading this book, I knew there had to be some similarities between the older Hollywood set but don't know about enough them to draw parallels. Well spotted!
