Jennifer Lawrence is SO MUCH better then other actresses whos names were in the mix (mainly Jodelle Ferland and Alyson Stoner).
I havent seen Winters Bone, and I dont think shes the best choice, but it could maybe work...
Anyway, if shes cast, we'll probably see Alex Pettyfer as Peeta-which I HATE!!!!!

I watched the trailer for Winter's Bone, and it wasn't awful. She seems fairly young, but has that Katniss-y... (hmm. Spunk?
But pull off the Katniss in my head? Probably not. Honestly, at this point, I don't even want a movie. *sigh*
Alex Pettyfer...perhaps. BUT he has to choose between several different movies and something tells me he won't pick Hunger Games...

Anyway, I don't think any of us have checked this yet, and their movie page is excellent and they're discussing the cast as well:

Am I the only one who is screaming at the casting directors to cast Alex as Gale.
He is SUCH a Gale.
He is SUCH a Gale.

If I were an IMdb "pro", I could cast...I don't know...
(And I don't like Alex for Peeta or Gale. Maybe one of the tributes. A minor one. That dies.)

Yeah, a lot of people think that's going to happen, and as far as I can tell, it is, unfortunately, because he is in fact being seriously considered.

Ugh, Im seeing all these news feeds on google news and twitter that Jennifer Lawrence is officially Katniss. Dated 'seconds ago'
I must say, she has grown on me. A bit of make-up and hair dye can work wonders. I dont know what her acting's like, since im yet to see 'Winters Bone', though shes been nominated for an Oscar, so she must be good, right?

To tell the truth, Im happy with the decision.
Now attention turns to casting Peeta: Three names seem to be floating around.
Alex Pettyfer
Hunter Parrish
Josh Hutcherson
Out of them all, I like Hunter the best, thought I dont want any to get the part. Josh has been in too many kids/YA movies already. If he is cast, It wont be Peeta on screen, it'll be the guy from Bridge to Terabithia, Runaway Vacation, Zathura and The Kids are alright.
Ugh, I dont want him.
And i'd rather see Alex as Gale, but if hes not in it at all, that would be better.

Jennifer Lawrence is blonde, blue-eyed, light-skinned, and nearly 21. In complete contrast, Katniss has black hair, grey eyes, an olive complexion, and is 16. Also, Katniss is supposed to be a strong but petite-framed girl.
Lionsgate is just doing whatever is most convenient for them, which is a letdown but not a surprise.

1. Have any of you guys seen Winter's Bone? Just wondering. I've seen trailers, and she certainly does no look curvy and sexy in that movie. She looks ragged and around the age of eighteen.
I do have an issue with age, but realisticly, Katniss is going to look older than sixteen. Hollywood can get away with this one (unlike the Percy Jackson movie)
2. We can get bettter co-stars this way. While hopefully not Alex Pettyfer (I'm against him) or another hot actor on the market. As an ameteur, enthusiastic, movie maker, I can see the advantages of having an older star, whereas if they'd cast Hailee they would have to pick younger co-stars, or else have her kissing older guys.
I'm not saying I don't think there were better choices. But lets face it, something is going to be wrong with this movie no matter what we do.
Good points, though Im still not disappointed.
Im not thrilled either though.
You're right: she will have to loose so much weight and completely mess up her body if she is to even look the part. And thats considering she will most likely have plenty more roles in the next few years, besides Hunger Games.
However, filming will need to be quick-they cant drag out the trilogy for too many years, or she WILL start to look really old.
Im sure they will mange her looks for the first movie, at least.
I guess Im just happy she got the role, not Jodelle Ferland,Abigial Breslin or *shudder* Alyson Stoner.

Well, at least they confirmed that Rue and Thresh were both African American.

What I disapprove about is that this makes it much more likely for Pettyfer as Peeta. And the fact that the author of the book does not picture her main character the way she wrote her. Physical appearance, she probably agrees with the description, but the age? Honestly? You're going to give your character life and then tell us she's not actually the age we all think she is? You should write a character to fit the age, or change the age to fit the character. If you think they're older than you originally said, change it.
I know, I really hope they dont completely mess it up. Anyway, they can easily give her olive skin. As I said, her appearance probably wont be much of an issue in the first movie.

Sorry. Ignore the shouting.

I was thinking this over last night. First I thought: Maybe they can make Katniss 17 or 18, age them up and make the casting look better.
Then I thought: NO. Thats the shockingness and appeal of the books, isnt it? That Innocent children need to kill each other and fight, not adults.
Plus, if all the tributes are adults, the original thrill of catching fire would be much less, right? It would be like an exact repeat of the first movie.

I guess now im not mad at Jennifer, but at Lionsgate. When you put it like that, it pisses me off too, how they didnt even try.
I just hope they dont choose Alex Pettyfer or Hunter Parrish for Peeta. Though Ive got a baaaad feeling...
