Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9987 comments Here we are in rainy Birmingham. Slight glitch in plans....
The carrier we used for our Milan-Birmingham trip, Germanwings, has a slightly strange system where one's cabin bag, if close to size limit, will be put into the hold as one is embarking. These bags are then collected on the tarmac after one descends from the plane. This is because the overhead lockers are not generous. But DH had paid for one checked in bag so we checked in my wheelie bag and his went through the business on the tarmac. That worked well, but with the short transfer time between our late flight into Dusseldorf and our flight to Birmingham, even though that one, too, was delayed, meant that my checked-in bag did not make it onto the flight with us. So after waiting by the baggage retrieval and realising it was not coming out, we went to report it lost. This means that I have no toiletries, no make-up, no charger cords for the phone, camera, tablet etc and very few clothes. And our three Aus/UK converter power plugs are all in that bag too. So here we sit in the hotel at Birmingham airport hoping to get a call to say that my bag has come in this morning's flight. What fun!

We worked out that both my tablet and DHs phone can be charged from his car charger (both Samsung), and might be able to use one of his other chargers for my phone. But no way to charge the camera battery, or transfer photos from camera to tablet....
About to go hire a car and go stay somewhere cheaper, will have to buy some toiletries etc

Mikana (mikanakat) | 72 comments Just wanted to say hello from Newcastle (NSW) and see if anyone else has an interest in pet rats?

message 22710: by Neko (new)

Neko i always wanted one but wasn't allowed as a kid...friend of mine had one or two soo i got to play with his. I was allowed mice which is completely different. Now with my cat I couldn't own a rat...I'm most certain he'd find a way to kill it :( **bad experience with mice/cat combo ages ago**

message 22711: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments Hope everything turns out ok Marianne and you get your bag soon.

First time we went to NZ my hubby's bag took 3 days to catch up with us - and it also had our chargers!

He had all his underwear in his luggage and so I very kindly offered him some of my lacy knickers! I have no idea why he turned me down ;)

message 22712: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9987 comments LOL Sally!!
We hired a car and are now in a B&B very near to Stratford-upon-Avon (walking distance, we discovered when we checked in) so guess what we're doing tomorrow?

Went to a Tesco near Warwick for some cheap essentials (deodorant, socks, undies) also bought a pair of joggers, as the ones I'm wearing have the sole coming loose, and a pair of jeans, as I somehow have a few tops in DH's luggage, but no pants..

Also got a bit of food and a bottle of scotch.

But first, pub lunch (steak & kidney pie, peas, chips, cider, beer) at The Red Lion in Knowle, then wandered up the road to the Oxfam shop for a little consolation for poor little me. So perhaps somehow my First World problems help out the Third World a little?

See Recently Purchased thread.....

Carolyn | 9868 comments I love rats Mikana but I'm allergic to them (mice as well). I get dreadful hay fever and red, swollen eyes (not pretty!) so I have to admire them from afar!
I had a friend once who had a black and white pair called Maggie and Dennis ( he was a fan of Maggie Thatcher).

message 22714: by Carolyn (last edited Sep 22, 2015 02:26PM) (new)

Carolyn | 9868 comments I once had a long flight with my tow year old son from Sydney to Manchester to meet up with my DH who was over there for work. We were supposed to clear customs at Heathrow and then catch a regional flight, but no bags arrived on the carousel. Had to go to Manchester without them for three days with only the only change of clothes I had for the toddler (and none for me). Had to do the same as Marianne and buy a few emergency staples, but at least the bags turned up before we headed off on our driving holiday in France.

message 22715: by Neko (new)

Neko Marianne - Is the bottle of scotch to drink now while waiting to see if the bag turns up? I'm sorry you've been put in this situation. Hope it turns up!!!

Like others I've lost luggage as well. My family went to Hawaii and we switched islands and during that the bag that contained everything we bought (!!!) plus some clothes for everyones went missing. It got found (said it didn't even leave the airport) and they personally delivered it to our hotel but still not fun.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Veronica Cold down here on coastal Vic, we're entering our usual six weeks of wild winds so it's inside with the heater on for me. The wee doggie Mo and rescue dogs will get a quicker walk today.

It is cold, isn't it Veronica! I hope you have a lovely time in Q'ld and yes, it most definitely should be warmer there (27 yesterday in Ipswich when it was about 18 here!)

Sally906 | 89 comments It RAINED this morning - Woo Hoo!!! A good solid bucketing down for about an hour - then gentle rain for a further hour!!! It was almost worth being woken up at 3 am for - then giving up and getting up at 4 am!

First rains since April.

The build-up has started.

Mind you it is going to be disgustingly hot and humid once the sun gets up - but the rain was SO nice :)

message 22724: by Neko (new)

Neko Completely clear blue sky here this morning! Hope it stays that way as I think I gotta spend time outside for work and yesterday it was freezing outside standing around..bbrrr!

That's fantastic Sally!! About time eh;) But the humidity will be horrible:(

message 22726: by Mikana (new)

Mikana (mikanakat) | 72 comments The weather in Newcastle is horrible - we had a couple nice warm days, then back to freezing days followed by colder nights. We missed the hail storm that hit the Central Coast though. Naturally I have to go out today, so it's raining again.

@Carolyn Its a shame about the allergies, but I understand - I have a slight reaction if they scratch my skin, no where as bad as my occasional allergy to the sun though, so I put up with it :)

Mikana, did you see Sally's post in the Librarian chat thread?

message 22728: by Mikana (new)

Mikana (mikanakat) | 72 comments I had missed it - but thank you. I can't believe someone found the book I was looking for, I had almost given up. It's a fabulous book for cat lovers. I did find the Warrior set, which I'm most intrigued about, and plan to read the first one at some point this year.

I have a book I received from the author that I'm trying to finish first, as well as picking some of the short read books that I've got actually read and off my to-read shelf. For example currently reading The Plagiarist by Hugh Howey.

The Plagiarist is a Hugh Howey book I have not read yet. I like his stuff.
Can you link your books for us Mikana? It makes it easier for us all to have a look at them if we are interested:)

@Laura, we did make quite a dent in the scotch, yes. Not that that stopped me from mentally listing all that might be forever lost to me if the bag never turned up....

I am certain that all those good wishes and positive vibes from Aussie Readers ensured it came back to me, so thanks, everho e!
