It's still been crazy hot here, although nothing compared to what my southern friends are experiencing of course. Still temps have been high 30's and my neighbour across the road left abruptly two weeks ago when her mother sadly passed away but she left behind her dog with no one to feed or water him - Robbie and I have been taking care of him and we both understand how it might be easy to forget small details like that in the midst of grief but it's still very distressing to see the poor dog suffer and we can't access their backyard so can only slide small amounts of food/water at a time under their front fence. We've rung several times to try and get her husband, at least, to come and pick up the dog but nothing so far.

Oh my goodness Tracey! That is terrible! You could ring the RSPCA or a vet...they'd get in and get the dog. It should be looked after much better than that! I wouldn't leave it there on it's own in this terrible weather...the poor thing:(

Has anyone seen it?"Went to see Life of Pi on New Years Day (after rereading the book) and really enjoyed it. I was pleased how true to the book it was. Definitely see it in 3D, the effects are well worth the extra price.
this is an old song, but its been doing the round in my house lately ( my roommate only just realized how much better my ipod is then hers...no Justin beieber enough said) and I feel like sharing it :)

Visually in 3D it was amazing and although the story featured a man and a Bengal Tiger in a boat for a fair bit of it it wasn't boring at all."I've heard nothing but good things about the movie, but whereas I think mine is probably a minoritarian view, the book really annoyed me:

Did you enjoy the movie more for having read the book? Or did anyone not fond of the book enjoy the movie, nevertheless? I won't be able to see it till it's available on the net, in any case, so the 3-D won't be a factor, but I'll probably give it a shot.

Michael - READ THE BOOK!
Life of Pi was wonderful thoroughly enjoyed both book and movie. I saw the movie in 2D maybe I should go and see it in 3D.
Tracey wrote: "It's still been crazy hot here, although nothing compared to what my southern friends are experiencing of course. Maybe you should call RSPCA to give you a hand. It is such a hard situation. Do keep us up to date please.
Okay I'm going to differ here. I read the book, got to the end and thought what a waste of time and have no intention of seeing the movie.

It's been a hot one here in Adelaide today. checked a few minutes ago and it was 36 and it's mean't to get to 42 tomorrow yay not. :("
Just saw on the weather map it would be 42 for you tomorrow too Michael:( We had 35 today, and it's supposed to be 39 tomorrow:(:(

Oh dear, I hope bookless libraries don't take off :-( And I don't really think they will during my lifetime (although maybe that's just naive and/or optimistic thinking) but it would be a shame if future generations are only exposed to reading through electronic devices. But maybe that just makes me sound old-fashioned... It does make me less inclined to buy an e-reader despite the obvious conveniences offered with e-readers - I will support borrowing/buying physical books to try and prevent loss of services - certainly a case of use it or lose it, I think.

Well, there's a lot more in the book than the movie can show, as is common with all books made into movies. I loved the book, reread it before seeing the movie and was glad I did. Enjoyed reading it both times.
I've just downloaded the audio book so am keen to start listening to it soon on my drive to and from work. It's one that I've had on my list to read forever but never really had the incentive to until all the hype around it now.My boss saw the movie in 3D the other night and due to my sensitivity to movies where animals get hurt or die (yes, I'm a wuss when it comes to that stuff) she recommended I don't see the movie even if I like the book. Apparently there are some VERY graphic scenes in some parts, especially when seen in 3D!

I guessed from the trailer that this movie might be even sadder than Bambi so I will be following your boss's recommendation!

I can readily understand why people might like a movie based on The Life of Pi, but I'm honestly baffled as to why anyone likes the book, itself. It just seems to me a tedious exercise in confused symbolism and ginned up spiritual awe. Reactions seem to be very bimodal, though the likes far exceed the dislikes, so obviously there's something in it that I'm just not responding to.

Dale and Mark, I think you are either a fan of Yann Martel or you're not. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground with him. Personally I really enjoy his books but there were others in our book club that hated them, their word not mine. I am curious to see the movie but would like to reread the book before I do. I've heard it's awesome but I've learned that with movies, as with books, you really need to make up your own mind.

I can find objective criteria on the basis of which to justify my aversion to The Life of Pi, but I suspect it's also largely a matter of temperament. Martel isn't clueless or incompetent. He knows exactly what he's trying to do, and the only question is whether a given reader finds it appealing or utterly hates it.

You're both absolutely right and it does make for interesting book club discussions when the book/author brings out totally different reactions in it's members. I guess the fact that Martel manages to cause such polar reactions says a lot about him. I agree Mark he definitely isn't clueless or incompetent.
Emily wrote: "Just sent off my first application to adopt a dog! Feeling a little excited :)"Our Maltese, Chicki Rose, was adopted from the RSPCA in Sydney, at the age of thirteen months. She is lovely, though still a little afraid of other dogs, fast movements, and loud noises.
It's good to hear from people who've read the book and seen the movie. I'm afraid it'll be blander than the book...

Margret, just think of the pleasure she has given you and how lucky she is to have a lovely caring family to look after her.

Yes, Faye, she is very devoted to us, just as we are very close to her. She has many endearing qualities! :)
Thank you guys! I am very enthusiastic and also trying not to be too invested. They asked for photos of my yard today to help with the decision so I hope that's a good sign...I will keep you posted on my progress :)

I couldn't not call given how hot it was and Robbie and I could only feed and water him through a gap in the front fence which was really not good enough. The field officer who collected the dog said they will be pressing charges against her for abandonment, neglect and cruelty - I don't know what penalties those charges might bring but I'm just super relieved that Bundy will now be all right and well cared for.
Tracey, you did the right thing, in a very difficult situation. Now at least Bundy has a chance to recover and go to a good home. Well done. Don't worry about your neighbour, if they really cared about Bundy they would of made some sort of arrangement.

Well done Tracey! You definitely did the right thing for poor Bundy. Don't feel guilty about the neighbours, they deserve everything they get, and I hope the RSPCA does continue through with the charges! You certainly gave them every opportunity by phoning them numerous times...

I know we talk about the weather a lot lately but I am in Sydney and the temperature has already rocketed up to 40 at 12.00. That's a bit unusual for us!
Wow Phrynne! Are you inland, or on the coast?
It was 35 at 10am here (my place outskirts of Newcastle) and is now 42!! Blowing a gale as well:( Horrible weather...poor firefighters have got to be so exhausted!!!

Nearer to the coast. We very rarely get this hot. The wind hasn't arrived here yet. I guess it's on the way.
Well we are now nudging 42 degrees so I hope the inland isn't much hotter! The wind is just beginning as well. Just hope the southerly arrives before bed time!!!
Stay safe and keep cool, guys.
Yes we made it to 46 too but it is a little less now. The sun has gone behind clouds. We might even get the thunder storm they predicted. That would be nice!
