Interesting piece of news I just found about The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina which I know a few of us have on our TBR lists...
CONGRATULATIONS to Denise Mina!
Scottish author Denise Mina won the 2012 Theakstons Old Peculier crime novel of the year award for her novel End of Wasp Season. Theakstons Old Peculier crime novel of the year award is awarded annually at Harrogate Crime Writing Festival in the UK. The winner receives £3000 and a small hand-carved oak beer cask carved by one of Britain's last coopers. If you have not read Denise Mina before make sure to discover this yet another Scottish master of "bloody" fiction.

I don't see what all the fuss is about hahahaha converting non readers into readers lol :)
Katie wrote: "Haha Brenda my best fiend does not read...Hi, Katie,
Do you have any other "fiends?" I really think we need to pool our theological resources and send you an exorcism ritual. Mostly, people aren't surrounded by "fiends" unless they're paranormally cursed, or happen to work in politics. :) :)
Haha!! Mark, you've got me chuckling here again!!!
@ Katie, converting non-readers to readers isn't a bad thing!!

Tracey wrote: "Thanks for the nice endorsement Mark. I know that the only thing I've ever wanted to do in my life is tell stories that people would enjoy. I don't aspire to be Shakespeare but I do aspire to con..."Tracey -- You deserve not only an endorsement, but a positively panegyrical review, which I'm dreadfully sorry to have been so dilatory in writing.. For the record, though, I think you have a sort of instinct for seizing the reader's attention in a death grip and never letting go. You really are a gifted storyteller.
Michael wrote: "A lady i work with is reading the first one and was telling me all about it yesterday. Sounds quite bizzare from what she said lol."

I'd like to think that '50 Shades..' might lead former non-readers into sampling works more literate and uplifting. That may be, and probably is, a naive hope.:)
Mark wrote: "Tracey wrote: "Thanks for the nice endorsement Mark. I know that the only thing I've ever wanted to do in my life is tell stories that people would enjoy. @ Katie - now that you've bought the wretched volumes you HAVE to read them - if only to come back and tell us all they were terrible :) In all seriousness though this reminds me a little of the Harry Potter phenomenon, whether you think those tomes deserved it or not, and sometimes it really just is about being in the right place at the right time. I for one, won't be reading it, not because of the hype, but simply because I don't read erotica - I'll try almost any other genre, even confess to reading the occasional romance or chick lit book, but I just don't read erotica. As for whether or not it will lead non-readers into becoming readers I know of many, many people who read the HP books and never lifted another book after that. Time alone will tell.
Hope everyone's having a great weekend :)

Good, meaningful picture! I can see you're presenting the book well, and the warm weather also shows.
Happy times!:)

I wonder how those who were scandalized by 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' (which I haven't read) would view this book.
Margaret wrote: "Tracey wrote: "Mark wrote: "Tracey wrote: "Thanks for the nice endorsement Mark. I know that the only thing I've ever wanted to do in my life is tell stories that people would enjoy. My problem with Lawrence was never that I thought his work was erotic, but that I thought he had a tin ear and an utterly pathetic grasp of the English language (especially given the literary standards of his time). Sons and Lovers, too, I found to be agonizingly tedious.
Mark wrote: "Margaret wrote: "Tracey wrote: "Mark wrote: "Tracey wrote: "Thanks for the nice endorsement Mark. I read 'Sons and Lovers' as an essential part of senior high school English, and my impression of its tediousness aligns with yours. There was an aura of depression in the whole work, and it moved slowly. Still, I remember parts of it, I won't say how many years later....:)
Margaret wrote: ..." (about Sons and Lovers)Margaret - I'm stricken with sadness at the thought that any part of this literary abomination should have become imprinted on your mind! :)
Perhaps it became imprinted because I was only sixteen or seventeen when I read it as part of a compulsory course. A very impressionable age!I'm afraid real life has left me with many, far worse impressions, Mark.:) But I won't go there.
Just letting you know that our fifth book, 60 Questions, Insights and Reminiscences, is now on Kindle. Also, A Taste of Life and Love in Australiahas been revised, and is also up. However, not all the mistakes have been ironed out, and we're going to see if any more can be done to it.

I know, and I'm sorry. About the deleterious effects of exposure to Lawrence, I was rather joking. About "real life," I'm not at all. You remember what Mephistopheles said to Faust on being asked why he "wasn't in hell..." Sometimes, I really wonder.
YAY!!! I just received my letter from tafe with an offer :) got appointment 2moro to arrange days and times... :)
Just alerting everyone...there is a bug and no-one is receiving their notifications at the moment. No idea how long it'll take to be fixed, but GR staff are working on it (I hope;P)!
The 2012 Prime Minister's Literary Awards were announced this morning;http://literary-exploration.com/2012/...
Thanks for the heads-up, Brenda, inre the missing email notifications. I'd been going crazy, trying to figure out what was wrong with my settings. Though I assume it'll be obvious, please let us know when the ptb advise you that the problem has been conclusively remedied. Thanks!

I just had the most awful thing happen, a dog ran in front of my car and I hit it. I feel dreadful, the dog seems to be ok, but that doesn't make me feel any better. The owner said it was her fault because she had it off lead and it was a black dog and it had just gone dark outside. Please can everybody look after their animals, even though it was an accident, it doesn't make me feel any better.
Faye wrote: "I just had the most awful thing happen, a dog ran in front of my car and I hit it. I feel dreadful, the dog seems to be ok, but that doesn't make me feel any better. The owner said it was her fault..."Faye - You have to forgive yourself for things that aren't your fault. Accidents happen to animals (and people) all the time, and it's absolutely unavoidable. It could have been absolutely anyone in a car passing by when the dog ran into the street. You're no more responsible than for a bird dropping out of the sky on the other side of the continent. Anyway, it sounds as though the dog is fine.

Don't beat yourself up over something that wasn't your fault. Your advice to pet owners is sage, however. As a pet owner myself I always try to ensure my dogs and cat are out of harms way - I wish I could say I always succeed but Pippa is a little escape artist :) I'll be thinking of you Faye.
On another note my stupid mobile phone broke the other day and now I have to make the trek into the city to get it replaced. Such a pain.

One thing I hate about the current generation of (non-rooted) phones, is the planned infeasibilty of doing system-image backups and restores. Anyway, sending much commiseration your way.

More on this...I think they're pretty much back though:) So we're still restoring the old notifications. they should all be back in the next 8 hours, but don't quote me on that.
I think if you didn't get notified for a comment this morning/yesterday you won't get notified. This particular error shouldn't ever happen again.
Sorry!
Someone said that's a bold statement...lol

Thanks Mark and Tracey for your pep talks, I feel much better today, I have spoken to the dog owner, she took her dog to the vet and all is ok, it just gives you such a fright. Appreciate your support in a moment of need. Tracey good luck with the phone, what a pain, I won't let my husband have new phones anymore as he is a gardener, so far one ended up being mulched through an industrial mulcher, one has been run over by a ride on mower and the other ended up in a beautiful swimming pool. Got to love technology. Faye
Sure is Michael:)
Had a wonderful evening tonight at my bookclub. We had as our guest, author Wendy James and we discussed her book The Mistake (among other things!) She is a lovely person, and we all had lots of fun!

Unfortunately Mark it is a 'smart' phone so it's going to be a huge pain getting everything back the way I like it - my nieces are coming over this afternoon so I think I'll leave it to them... again lolSounds like you had a great night Brenda - I used to be a member of a bookclub but so many people dropped out there was only 3 of us left in the end, seemed a waste.
Other news, I've almost finished all the edits for the short story anthology, should be polished and ready to go by the end of the month. Yippee! I've got 8 weeks before my next piece of Uni assessment is due and I'm getting heaps of reading/note taking done. Guess you could say that all is well in my Kingdom :)
Wishing everyone a great week :)
Great news Tracey on your work/uni/reading front! Well done:)
Yes, we did have a great night...it was very special:) Tracey, those 'smart' phones should be smart enough to do it all themselves!!

Of course, others are right and you can only stop feeling badly when you allow it. Don't waste too much time and energy on something you cannot change - it's past now and is just one of those freakish things that happen. It could have been a lot worse so be thankful for that much.

I was at the hairdresser this afternoon, and all the young ones could talk about was Fifty Shades of Grey!!!! One of them said (jokingly I hope) that she is semi-literate, so the writing didn't matter to her!!!
