Does it matter how many books I want to read for my own list? I have been seeing some of you have been doing like 12 books on your list so are we limited on the number of books or can we just add as many that we think we can get through for the year?
Also I know how to add a thread as I run a couple of groups on this site.
But I want to participate more with you all besides just listing my monthly reads on here. :)

Rachel, are you viewing this group on a cell phone or computer?
I'm on a laptop computer. If you are on a phone, we will have to see if someone who uses a cell phone for help.
If anyone else can help Rachel and I, please don't hesitate to jump in.
There are Folders and Threads within each Folder on the Main page.
Normally, I start all threads. You usually just click Reply.
However, for the challenge each person will start their own thread.
Here is the Challenge Folder on our Main Page
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
In that folder you:
In the upper right of the screen that appears is "New Topic". Click on that & the screen you need will appear.
From there, fill out the Topic
Topic: (Your Name- 100 Book Challenge- 2023 ).
Click on the Comment box, as you do when you normally post. Fill it in with a copy/paste of the 100+ prompts, then click on "post".
As the year progresses and you complete a book, hit the Edit button on your post that lists the 100+ prompts.
You can either:
Type the title of the book you read for a particular prompt or put the Good Reads link for the book under the prompt.
Or you can just put a check mark next to the completed prompt.
If you just put a check mark, then below in your thread share the title you read and comment on the book.
If you are unsure, please look at the challenge lists for 2022 or ask for further help.
Remember:
1- You don't have to read 100 books. One book can fit multiple prompts.
2- You decide if a book you read fits a prompt.
3- Note: there are 105 prompts. That is to give you some wiggle room if a particular prompt is not to your liking.
3- This challenge is for fun. Please, no stress !
4- The challenge begins on January 1, 2023

Actually Alias for myself - I wasn't wanting to join the 100 book challenge - I was asking about the DL challenge.
Are we allowed to read how many books we want on that challenge or is there a certain amount?

Books or authors or other prompts that you are Determined to read in the coming year. You do you !
The DL's go in the Determination Lists & Challenges Folder. You create the post.
So far Deb and myself have DL's posted for 2023. You can check ours. You will also see a more extensive challenge that Julie creates for herself each year.
Good luck with your DL. I look forward to seeing what you create.

Thank you so much, Alias! I will be creating my list for 2023! :)

the master list of prompts to either check one off that you completed or write the title of the book. You would be able to Reply as you normally do in the thread. You could post the books and the prompt # there. You would have to keep track maybe on paper as the year goes on.

I see a section called Challenges but it is blank. Could you list the challenge there by any chance?

What you are looking at is on the home page so that won't work.
I will try to see if I can walk you through it. Do you see something that says "Discussions"? Go to Discussions - then scroll down through there and you will see a folder that says "Determination Lists & Challenges" - if you click on that then it brings up everyone's challenges. Once you are in that folder - you should see something that says "new topic" - it will be kind of small but once you find that then click on it and it will open up a page that will let you fill in boxes. Type in your name - year and what challenge you are doing and then you will have a comment box on there where you fill in what you want to do. :)

AND, Wikipedia often has a page for specific genres, which helps, too.

Do you look for books that you want to read and see what prompts they fill? Or do you seek out books that fit the prompts?

Do you look for books that you want to read and see what prompts they fill? Or do you seek out books that fit the prompts?"
I usually start the year reading what I want and see if it fits the prompts. However, others prefer to seek out books to fit the prompts. You do you ! It's all good.

Do you look for books that you want to read and see what prompts they fill? Or do you seek out books that fit the prompts?"
This year i followed the prompts and did rather nicely. For 2023 i am looking at my TBR lists (personal, library wish list & Goodreads "wanna read") because i want to whittle them down. So i am looking at titles, to see which will fill a prompt. It's my intention to read more non-prompt books, too, for that TBR whittling. In 2022 i was somewhat obsessed with filling the prompts. Not again! LOL!

Do you look for books that you want to read and see what prompts they fill? Or do you seek out books that fit the prompts?"
First thing I did was correlate (match) my TBR pile as best I could. I found a couple of books that weren't on it are available as library books; I did spend an Audible credit for one as I felt the sample narration was noticeably better than the library copy.
Like Madrano, this year I won't be going as far out of my way toward completing the list.
Also, I'm going to focus on interesting books, qualifying or not; that having been said, I do have a couple of books, honestly, that I'm not really looking forward to, but will try them as qualifiers.

I am reading one challenge book now and I remembered another book that has been in the Black Hole of my Kindle that will fit another prompt.
All in all I think I will have finished around 90 prompts. I have to count and make sure. I will probably end up reading almost 70 books this year. Since a single book can connect with multiple prompts, it really wasn't too hard for me.
For me, the challenge has helped me read outside of my comfort zone. I couldn't whittle down my physical TBR as my books are in storage. Though I did read a few long ago purchased eBooks thanks to the challenge. I also purchased a few new eBooks.
Yesterday I was discussing books with a family member and he mentioned he found a good website for used books. I have to ask him again which one it was. He noted it's so easy with one click now to buy used books ! Too easy, he said. LOL
I mentioned to him that I have purchased used books from Amazon and Abe Books and I was happy with them. Since I have Prime, I don't pay for shipping on some of the used books.
So all in all, the 100 challenge and completing my Determination list of books was a success for me. I was really happy to finish my 2022 DL. That's something which I haven't' done in a long time.

I'll bet! I'd be interested in that site, too. Sadly, when we were in Portland, i only got to Powell's Book Store one time. Big Loss, as they used to be my used book source. They are online, so i intend to check them out for books, too.
Still, my list is so old that i suspect subsequent authors addressing the same titles will be better. I'll need to be aware of that.
Good luck, Rachel. When i started this challenge last year, i had no prep time, as it was my first big and random one, not from my own DL selection of titles. (If that makes sense.)
Do Not Stress on this. Just read books you want to read, then see if it fits a prompt. This is another way to tackle it all!

I texted him. It's
Thrift Books.
https://www.thriftbooks.com/?gclid=Cj...

Lindsey, i have found some of my most unusual books at such thrift stores over the years. Even now, as we travel, we'll drop into a Salvation Army or such to find the next book we'll be reading. It seems there is always something to hit the spot.

I'm using a Chromebook and can see it fine.

I love browsing too. I'm curious - do you typically look for books you already recognize (from TBR lists or otherwise), or pick up random books and read the backs?

- other posters here at BNC
- YouTube
- Book clubs like Jenna etc.
- NY Times Book Review
- Amazon
- Bestseller lists
- Friends recommendations.
- Library book lists that I post.

I primarily check out what others here have told us about in reviews and what shows up on my library's opening page for Overdrive.
When in a used book or thrift store, i look for oldies, those from 1950 and earlier. Looking at issues from those early 20th century books intrigues me, for some reason.
Additionally, i have a list of classics i would like to own in hardcover, so i also check it out. Sometimes i luck out. Oddly, when i don't, my husband seems to find a book he wants to read. Our tastes are different, so i'm okay with that. ;-)

Yes ! I forgot NPR. I love their author interviews.

I do not listen to the radio either.

Our PBS includes their schedule & the NPR, nothing has clicked with me. I really think it's that i just don't listen much to the radio, so nothing is apt to call to me.

You can listen to most of the NPR shows on Podcasts.

I suppose this is why i marvel at what folks here listen to & watch. I feel behind, in some ways, but reading is my joy. It may be i have a "thing" against the human voice, eh?

I can't listen to podcasts or audiobooks if I'm doing something else, like cleaning or other tasks.

I agree about listening to pods or audios while performing tasks, i just don't pay attention to them.

Also, in the Challenge List, #33 says "23 books in 2023" and I'm not sure how that integrates into the challenge.
Can someone help me out?
Thank you! :-)

Also, in the Challenge List, #33 says ..."
You "claim" that one as completed when you finish your 23rd book of the year; that book crosses off category #33.

A Determination List (DL) is a challenge just for yourself. It can be anything you want it to be. Books you want to read, authors you want to read or make up prompts. You decide on how many prompts. The Folder for this is Titled.
Determination Lists & Challenges
You can look in the and see how others have set theirs up for ideas.
Also posts, #1 #2 #3 in the Folder explains this more.
The 100 Book Challenge of 2023 is a challenge where everyone does the same prompts. You can find the list of 105 prompts in the first post with further instructions in the Folder Titled: 100 Book Challenge
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
For this challenge you Do NOT have to read 100 books. One book can check off multiple prompts. This is the second year we are doing this. You can look at 2022 to see how we did it.
As you read during the year you check off the prompt that book fits. You then hit EDIT on the post were you copied the 105 prompts and put a check mark and post the title of the book you finished under the prompt or like John, you can just EDIT and put a check mark to indicate you fulfilled that prompt and discuss the book below in your thread.
It really isn't too hard. However, it's hard to explain ! LOL
As John explained, once you read 23 books during the year 2023, you have completed that prompt and can check it off.
Hope this helps.
