The Sword and Laser discussion
Introduction and welcome thread!

I was a voracious reader as a child. I bought my first book, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" with a silver dollar given to me on my birthday in the 3rd Grade. My first sci-fi was "Red Planet" by Heinlein. I grew up with Edgar Rice Burroughs, Bradbury, Azimov, Clarke etc., and then discovered Fantasy (with a big "F") in Tolkien in my teens.
Favorite books: Lord of the Rings, anything by James Blaylock, Laurie R. King's Mary Russell books, anything by Dean Koontz, anything by Dorothy Sayers...it's a long list.
Hey Everyone, my names A.J. I'm new to the S&L show, and to Goodreads. It all looks cool, and I can't wait to join the fun! Just started reading Old Man's War... And I just wanted to stop by and say "Hi." gl hf.

My absolutely favourite author above all is Ursula Le Guin. I also love Diana Wynne Jones. The Harry Potter books were probably my 'gateway' to fantasy and science fiction as I hadn't read that much genre fiction before them. Once you start, you can't stop...
So I'm looking forward to getting some great recommendations here! I already discovered Patrick Rothfuss on the strength of this podcast, and am so glad I did!

I'm a very long time Genre reader, starting with Foundation when I was in the Third Grade. My long-time favourite Author would have to be Guy Gavriel Kay.

I have a webcomic: http://reddkaiman.blogspot.com/2013/0...
I also have a webseries: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj5v42...
So much web, I feel like a spider. Feel free to hit me up on Twitter @reddkaiman

My name is Athena and I love genre fiction. I lean more toward the 'Sword' end of the spectrum, one glaring exception being the Warhammer 40k universe, like First and Only. I grew up reading Brian Jacques and Diana Wynne Jones. More recently I can't get enough of Brandon Sanderson, Terry Pratchett, and many others.
I've been following Geek & Sundry for awhile now but only recently began watching Sword & Laser. Looking forward to chatting with you guys about books!

Howdy everyone. My name is Aaron, and I am addicted to Fantasy and Sci-Fi
(Crowd droans Hello)
I think I first realized that I had a problem when I sent out fake wedding invitations as an April fools joke one year, telling everyone that I was engaged to my favorite character (not telling, so don't ask).
However, instead of everyone reacting how I thought they would by saying "Hehe, that was pretty funny," most of them reacted with concern, thinking that I was serious and that I needed professional help.
That is when I thought, "Hmmm, If I'm giving off a vibe that makes people think I would do something like that seriously, I need to rethink my life a little bit."
I'm much more adjusted now, but I still keep a copy of the wedding invitation in my desk just to remind me not to over share when I meet new people.
Crap, I think I just over shared...

I have been on GR for awhile and I love this site!
AT any rate I used to read a ton of fantasy books until I learned about urban fantasy but recently I find that I miss fantasy. So here I am. I am looking forward to getting back in touch with my roots :-)
Happy Reading!

OMG That would have cracked me up!!

I grew up reading Tamora Pierce and Orson Scott Card and my current favorites include John Scalzi, Terry Pratchett, China Mieville, and Douglas Adams. My favorite authors from other genres are PG Wodehouse, GK Chesterton, Ian Fleming and Jane Austen. I also like reading 20th century music textbooks.

I am definitely more a sword guy but occasionally dabble in the laser realm. Some of my favorite authors are Patrick Rothfuss, Tad Williams, R. Scott Bakker, China Mieville, Gene Wolfe, Robin Hobb and Joe Abercrombie.

I'm Jason. I recently started listening to Sword & Laser. I read a lot of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. I'm also into video games so I have been reading the Halo Series and am getting ready to start some of the World of Warcraft novels, even though I don't play that game. The Hobbit was one of my favorite books as a kid so I'm going to re-read it and LOTR as soon as I finish the Game of Thrones Series. I also read a lot of military non-fiction. I was in the Navy but have been out for a few years now.

My given name is Ann, but online, I'm known as CapriUni, Capri, CU, and other permutations of the same (for the record, that's a contracted portmanteau of "Capricorn" & "Unicorn," and has nothing to do with either universities or the island of Capri). I was just sitting here thinking that I'd like to connect with new people and new conversations, and remembered that GoodReads had these forum things...
I've been a fan of the fantasy genre for as long as I can remember (literally, I remember flipping through the pages of Mother's mythology encyclopedias looking at the pictures when I was around four years old), and I think the first Sci-Fi I read was 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was about 12(?).
My main love now, though, is folk and fairy tales (aka "Wonder Tales"), and literary re-imaginings of the same as in Snow White, Blood Red. My current NaNoWriMo project is a novel based on Grimms' "The Goose-Girl" (but turned "inside out." -- it's the Princess who demands they switch places, instead of the servant girl).

I'm more a laser guy myself. I grew up on authors like Heinlein, Asimov, Silverberg, Clarke... Later my friends showed me classic fantasy but it always seemed easier for me to find crappy fantasy book than crappy sci-fi book in local stores. Probably because I knew nothing about it.
You can guess my favourite sci-fi novel but #1 for fantasy would be Lies of Locke Lamora today. Or something else, it was just something I remembered when writing this. Maybe it's because I saw that book in my sister's room today. Oh well.

I've been just watching the channel of Geek and Sundry, and have been enjoying all the shows immensely. As soon as I saw Sword and Laser, I was extremely excited. I've just recently re-sparked my love of reading and have been trying to finish up the Dark Tower series. As an English Teaching major in college, I've read or been reading most of the classics, but I really enjoy good old fashioned sci fi and fantasy, so it's nice to see a book club that has both those interests at heart. Can't wait to discuss more in detail with you guys and join you as we read some great books!

I'm gonna guess Speaker For the Dead. As great as Ender's Game was, I liked that one even better, though I have to admit I Lemmed Xenocide because I read it after the other two, and the story is to similar... well after I finish my current reads I may go back and try it again.

I have been reading science fiction, fantasy, and horror most of my life. These days I like other things too, but I stock mostly with fiction of one stripe or another. Some of my consistent favourites are Stephen King, Jose Saramago, Clive Barker, Dan Simmons, Robert McCammon, and Sean Stewart.
I can't promise that I'll contribute often, but I'll at least try to make it interesting when I do!

I came across Sword and Laser thanks to my following of the Dresen Files series, which we all know is ace. As a whole i guess i belong more to the Sword then laser, but i did enjoy the Quantam Theif by Hanu Rajaniemi and some of the Warhammer 40000 books. I like to consider myself a writer-in-training, i have ideas, half written projects and short stories all waiting to be brought to life. I am excited for the S&L anthology, just hoping it is available to the fans this side of the atlantic.
Hope to catch you all on the discussion threads, bye for now.

I'm Drew. I've been a fan of the Sword & Laser show and podcast for a while, and kind of "lurked though" some of the previous reads, but thought I'd stop by and check in now that I've finished Old Man's War.
I'm (shocker!) a bit of a nerd, been a big reader all of my life as well as a gamer and a comic book fan.
I love to write, although I often struggle with getting stuck at the world building stage, and have a hard time pushing myself up and over into the actual storytelling. Maybe I'll join in next year's NaNoWriMo.
Looking forward to taking a more active part in the discussions here, and enjoying the reads we do together!

Just found Sword and Laser through Scalzi's blog! Over the last few years, I've become a huge fan of Rothfuss, Scalzi, Martin and Gaiman, but still consider myself a novice in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. Look forward to catching up on the S&L playlist!

My favourite authors are Terry Pratchett, CJ Cherryh, Lois McMaster Bujold & Elizabeth Moon.

Many of my favourite authors include Terry Pratchett, Tolkein, Elizabeth Moon, Micheal Scott, David Gemmell, Bernard Cornwell, Eoin Colfer, Derek Landy, Rick Riordan, John Flanagan and Brent Weeks.
Luckily, just as I was running low on books to read I stumbled across The Sword and Laser, and have thoroughly enjoyed catching up as much as I can.
I've been writing a book for the past few years but have been a little lax lately; watching this show has inspired me to keep going.
Ahmed =)

Favorite authors include Issac Asimov, Robert Jordan, Iain Banks, and Frank Herbert just to mention a few.
Hopefully, the club will give me new favorite authors and books.

I've been listening to the pod cast for a couple of months and thought it would be fun to join in over here. I have been enjoying this months pick John Scalzi's Old Man's War, but I keep being distracted by Charles Yu's How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. I finished that last night, so back at it with Old Man's War.
This will be fun.

Starting with TableTop, I've been getting my friends watching Geek and Sundry shows. I've coaxed two to start following Sword and Laser on Goodreads to get a little local discussion of great fiction.
Thanks for having such a lively group of Sci Fi/Fantasy readers available to all. I can't wait to start posting along with everyone.

My name is Gunnhildur. I discovered The Sword and Laser book club through Geek & Sundry. Been following it for a couple of months. Old Man's War is the first book of the month I've read.
I love reading and thanks to the book clubs here on Goodreads I've discovered a whole new world of books and authors.

My name is Justin and I am a book addict. Fantasy and pulp hero fiction was generally what I used to read till I found The Sword and Laser via Geek and Sundry. Since then I have been reading a lot more science fiction and alternate history (at the moment reading Dreadnought by Cherie Priest).
So thanks guys for expanding my reading horizon's even more. My kobo (which I call the kobold) is loving the amount of use it is getting.
Cheers!

I'm Harrison from Newcastle upon Tyne, england.
Followed you in here from a recommendation.
I'm a nerd that devours sci-fi, I write, for my sins, fantasy. Don't read an awful lot of it, no time when writing, but a huge fan of the genre.
I'm reading Alex Scarrow's Time Riders series at present and thoroughly enjoying it.
I live with my long time partner, Staffordshire bull terrier, and African grey parrot.
Take care now,
Harrison

I noticed that a few of you awesome members are on my friends list. Anyway, I'm here by way of Kevin's kind invitation. Thank you!

I'm Michele, a long time compulsive reader. I started with Nancy Drew, but when I found my first Xanth novel in the library it was all over for me. Ever since I've haunted the sci-fi/fantasy sections of every bookstore within range. I had a huge collection of fantasy novels that were all falling apart from being re-read until I finally made the move to ebooks and now I'm recreating it in pixels.
Just a few of my favorite authors - Anne McCaffery, Mercedes Lackey, Melanie Rawn, Raymond E. Feist, David Eddings, Gene Wolfe, Christopher Stasheff, Tad Williams, Robert Heinlein, Frank Herbert, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.J. Cherryh, Elizabeth Moon...etc, etc.
I'm more "sword" than "laser" but I'll pretty much read anything - even the shampoo bottle when there's nothing else within reach!

Looking forward to reading the next book with the group, always looking for new stuff to read.

Been reading F & SF since the late 60s. Current faves are John Scalzi, Martha Wells, Steven Gould, Ben Aaronovitch, Lois McMaster Bujold, Terry Pratchett, Ursula K. LeGuin. I still have my original copies of Ender's Game and Ringworld. Looking forward to reading Old Man's War again and having a chance to discuss.
