The Sword and Laser discussion
Introduction and welcome thread!

I'm Ashley. I'm a Canadian living in Norway (which has made me entirely reliant on a Kindle for reading). I've loved fantasy since my much older brother who hated reading read the Neverending Story to me as a child because he knew I'd force him to finish reading it for school. Favourite fantasy authors include Tolkien, Pat Rothfuss, Scott Lynch, Robin Hobb, and lots more.

I've been a TWiT/TechTV/Revision3/Technology/Fantasy fan for at least 10 years!
I went to the panel you guys had at DragonCon last year and had a blast!
I'm also in AIE. Some of you guys may recognize me as Chewnoburoa.
By the way, grats on your first video episode!

the song of ice and fire books
the sword of truth by Terry Goodkind
to vatta's war by Elizabeth Moon
world war z by max brooks
at my present time i am going back of the books of Rick Riordan

I'm a huge fan of Patrick Rothfuss, Brent Weeks, Terry Brooks, and Anne Rice. I'm currently reading A Game of Thrones and can barely manage to put it down! I had begun to read R.A. Salvatore in the past but stopped for reasons completely unknown to me now, but i intend to pick it back up and read out as much of the "Drizzt series" that i can.
When i'm not glued to my Nook then i'm glued to the comp and gaming. I'm also continuously cooking, cleaning, taking care of my offspring and seeing to the various wants/needs of my Man-Hunk Hubby.
I found Goodreads and eventually S&L thanks to my love for The Guild and subscribing to Geek and Sundry. Loved the first episode of S&L and can't wait for the next!

I'm from Newcastle, Australia, and I landed here via Geek and Sundry.
I'm a third (and final) year nursing student (mid life crisis career change), so unfortunately I don't have loads of time to read right now. I am hoping that when I have some time to read something other than a textbook, that I will be able to join in here.

I've been a SF/F nerd for a long, long time. Followed a trail from G+, to Geek and Sundry, to here. I can't say that I'm looking to get anything out of the group, but it's always nice to share ideas and opinions with like-minded people.
Hard to choose just a few favorites, but mine will seem pretty mainstream in this crowd; JRR Tolkein, Isaac Asimov, Steven Brust, Glen Cook, Fred Saberhagen, Michael Moorcock, Arthur Clarke. I guess that'll do. I tend towards swords more than lasers, but it's really more about the people in the story than the setting where they live. Of course, it's always nice to read some old SF and see that we're well past some of their imagined technology. Guess it depends on the day.

I'm Holly, I love books. I can't get into e-readers, cause I love me paper pages. I love Sci/Fi Fantasy. I too like Veronica am a Sword. Although I am in my twenties I love reading YA and Juvi fiction and specifically YA fiction/fantasy.

When I was a teenager a thousand years ago, I read a lot of sci-fi, fantasy, etc. I've changed over the years but I still find books that interest me in the genre, so I do sort of keep up. I mostly read mysteries and chick-lit now (hey, I'm old and I don't want to be serious so much, any more). I also used to play D&D and other games...my favorite author is Connie Willis. I loved most of Heinlein, and I'm a big fan of Pern, although after awhile it got to be overdone.

You can follow me on Twitter at JoiseyDani. I also have a blog called It Is a Joisey Way of Thinking. That can be found at itisajoiseywayofthinking.blogspot.com
Hope to hear from you soon!
XOXO,
Danielle

This is my first official book club/group here. Geek and Sundry made me do it. Crap. I was fortunate to request a copy from our awes-tastic library and pick it up this afternoon. Since It has to go back in 3 weeks, I guess my reading goal is set lol.
Most recent books have been "The night circus" (Fall), The Hunger games trilogy( Dec/Jan). Looking forward to this very much :)

I'm Gordon from London, yet another one of the newbies sent this way via Geek & Sundry!
Always been a voracious reader of books so thought it'd be cool to sign up, I like both sword and laser stuff, slightly more towards laser though.
Liked all the usual stuff like Gemmell, Neal Asher, Asimov, Tolkein, Abercrombie, etc. That and everything produced by The Black Library, always have been a Games Workshop geek.
Just finished off Neil Asher's Spatterjay series, so off to start the Magicians I guess! :)

I like just about any genre. Right now I'm reading a murder/mystery, an apocalyptic, and a classic.

My name is Josh and I learned about you guys at Wondercon this year. Just finished watching your first video, awesome!
As to books and authors, I really like Glen Cook's Black Company series for the sword side and Laser side Peter F. Hamilton's the Nights Dawn Trilogy.
Currently reading Sword fighting in the Star Wars universe: Historical Origins, Style and Philosophy by Nick Jamilla.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
Josh

I enjoy all sorts of sf/fantasy books, especially if they have a historical or paranormal twist. Favorite authors - wow, too many to list -- I'm always discovering new favorites. And this great book club will introduce me to even more!

But I grew up on the classic Sci-Fi authors like Asimov, Bradbury and others. What does Edgar Rice Burroughs fall under? I guess John Carter is more Sword than Laser.
The first video episode was great. Definitely going to check out Scott Sigler's latest. Keep up the author interviews as much as possible!
Thanks!

Been listening to the podcast for a few years now, but The Magicians is the first book I've actually read along with - well, kind of, finished it a few days before the kick-off, but close enough :-)
I love sci-fi (mostly, but not exclusively hard sci-fi) and fantasy and have discovered a lot of great authors via the podcast (George R.R. Martin, Lev Grossman, Joe Abercrombie, Gene Wolfe, Brandon Sanderson, Richard Morgan etc)

I decided to join this group after watching the first video on YT because of Geek & Sundry and gotta say I really enjoyed the vibe of the show. I'm moreso a reader of comics when it comes to sci-fi or fantasy but that's slowly changing into novels as well..so this seems like the perfect place to get an intro into both sides.

I'm Lori and my favorite genre is Sci-Fi/Fantasy (basically the only genre I have read for my whole life-with some deviation due to school and what not). My favorite author's include, but are not limited too J.R.R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, Peter S. Beagle, Charlaine Harris, Douglas Adams, George R. R. Martin, J. K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, and the list goes ever on and on. I am always on the lookout for new and exciting things to read and I thought it was really cool to find an online book club. I'm looking forward to reading along with all of you!!

I'm a big reader of Fantasy; mostly GRRM, Sanderson, Rothfuss, Abercrombie, Brent Weeks but I also love reading science and historical fiction such as Jurassic Park and The Swarm for the former, And most books by Bernard Cornwell for the latter.

I found this group from Geek and Sundry and from seeing Veronica on Vaginal Fantasy. While I'm definitely more a sword than a laser I love all genres and hope that this group will make me read more.

How's it going? Name's Rick. I first became aware of Sword & Laser through watching the 'Vaginal Fantasy' hangout and then more recently via the youtube incarnation of the podcast!
Gotta say, I'm firmly in the "Fantasy Camp" though I do appreciate a good bit of Sci-Fi. Like many folks here I don't get to read nearly as much as I'd like to but I'm hoping being a part of this group will encourage me to do so on a more regular basis.
Some authors I like/admire are J.R.R Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman and Susan Cooper.
I'm also something of a budding Fantasy author myself and am looking to pen out my own piece of original Fantasy work at some point (once I can actually make the time to sit my butt down and get to it!).
Anyway, that about covers it for the moment. I look forward to getting to know you guys and read along with y'all!

I am a relationship blogger and lifelong bookworm who LOVES the epic fantasy genre. Some of my favorite authors are C.S. Lewis, Jim Butcher, and Robert Jordan. I found about about Sword and Laser when I read about the announcement of the new Geek and Sundry YouTube channel. My hope is to be introduced to great new authors and books, as well as to connect with fellow fantasy/scifi fans!

I enjoy reading Fantasy and on occasion, when the mood strikes, some good Science Fiction. I have never joined a book club or reading group but am fascincated by this one for some reason; maybe it is the "star" treatment that the moderators bring to the Fantasy & Sci-Fi community. I will admit had it not been for Geek & Sundry I would not have found this website considering that I am a very closetted reader who does not socialize much about what he reads. So maybe this will be a good thing for me? I look forward to meeting other readers and reading/listening to the different perspectives. I am still getting comfortable with this forum's format and how everything works and may end up lurking for a while until I feel most comfortable in providing my input. As I have said previously this is my first go at this.
I have plenty of favorite authors but if I had to take a few straight from the top, at the moment, then they would have to be:
J.R.R. Tolkien (obligatory)
G.R.R.M. (ASoIaF books 1-3 his current stuff has been pretty shoddy and if it continues to be so then he may be cut from my list :( )
Steven Erikson
Neil Gaiman
Patrick Rothfuss
Guy Gavriel Kay
J.K. Rowling
I am currently reading "The Darkness That Comes Before" by R. Scott Bakker. Once I have finished this book I will be reading the current book for the club. I am never really good with conclusion so I will just leave off with a quote that I believe is fitting :).
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." -A Dance with Dragons, GRRM.

This sounds like it'll be a fun time, and I'm excited to get started with "the Magicians", especially because I don't usually read much Urban fantasy. Thanks!

Hope to find out some new books here - and from the posts above it sounds like there is a video to watch as well!

I am the founder and main organizer of my city's local Harry Potter Club.
I am currently reading Ernest Cline's Ready Player One, and then Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus is next on my list.
Favourite authors include George R.R. Martin, S.M. Peters, Scott Lynch, Patrick Rothfuss, and Guy Gavriel Kay.
Hi everybody. My name is Sharat. I am a college student who aspires to write fantasy novels one day. My favorite authors in genre are: Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Christopher Paolini, and J.R.R. Tolkien. My favorite writers of all time are all old and dead: Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, and Mark Twain. Taking Creative Writing in college I am discovering poets such as: Billy Collins, Seamus Heaney, and Thomas Hardy.
I am currently trying to read ASoIaF. On Clash of Kings, just the beginning. Looking forward to reading and discussing with everybody!

I'm Nathan, a computer geek who likes to read! I love sci-fi (yeah big surprise?) and fantasy. I don't really have any particular favorite authors, just favorite books or series. I love The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan (the WoT series went downhill from there), Ender's Game and the Shadow series by Orson Scott Card, and I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. There's a lot more I really like, but those are the books that immediately come to mind.
The books I most want to read are the The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.
See you around!

I love all types of books including Sci-Fi,Horror,Fantasy and Non-Fiction books about a variety of subjects.
Im also a hardcore gamer and film lover.I discovered Sword&Laser on Twiiter and was already a member of GoodReads so it seemed like joining this group was a given.

So far I'm enjoying the book, podcast, and the video premiere. Who knew book clubs could be this awesome?

My name is Pavlina, I come from Bulgaria and live in Germany, where I study media engineering to be a game developer some day.. :)
I enjoy reading all kinds of books, but it seems like stuck to fantasy and a bit sci-fi. I get scared easily so I would have to pass on the really scary books :)
I am looking forward to talking about books with you all! :) Take care,
Pavlina

I found out about this group via Geek & Sundry and have listened to several podcasts since then.
My tastes are mostly laser-y, but from time to time I get an urge to read some sword-ish novels.
I hope I can follow through with groups reads, but it's sometimes hard when there's another several hundred books on my to-read list, each trying to seduce me and now since you brought in Scott Sigler on the show, I've got an urge to read Nocturnal instead of our this months novel.

I am a major dork, like the kind of dork that invents new words just for fun. And I am a major gamer. Love RPGs (Bioware owns my soul). I have always loved reading. I get it from my mother, who introduced me to fantasy books at a very young age by reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to me. And Frog and Toad. But latently I have not been reading as much as I should. I watched Sword and Laser on Geek and Sundry and I immediately joined Good Reads soon after. I am really excited to join and I hope this helps me get back into reading!
And sword all the way!

My name is Keith and I usually read fantasy but I am starting to consider to branch out into science fiction. I am an oilfield medic so I have tonnes of time to read between june and March.
Authors i like: Brent Weeks, Peter V Brett, Patrick Rothfuss, Rolenda Cory Daniells, Tamora Pierce, Maria Snyder.

I'm from Canada, love sci-fi and fantasy and manage the Ebook Apothecary. I enjoy helping indie authors get the word out about their books and of course discovering new and fabulous novels to escape into.
My favorite sci-fi novel is definitely "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card and my favorite fantasy is "The Warlock in Spite of Himself" by Christopher Stasheff (which I suppose is actually more of a science-fantasy).

My name is David and I too am a fan of sci-fi/fantasy. I love Butcher, Pratchett, Rothfuss, and more recently Randolph Lalonde. Happy reading to us all.
