I remember the first book that I read was a copy of Tinkle at the age of 7-8 (not sure of the exact year). There was a power cut, and I read the comic in candle-light. Finished it in one go, and from then on was hooked to books.

My first books were Nancy Drew Series after which I read Anne of Green Gables, I think I was hooked after that. :)
A few of the books that have contributed greatly to my passion for reading are The Great Gatsby, The Outsiders, and of course Shakespeare's plays. :)

I don't remember exactly when did I start reading, I must be around 17 or 18. Right from school I was fascinated with the Hitler, so I started with Mein Kempf, but I didn't understand most of the things that I read. And then I started buying cheap books sold outside railway station... I read anything from Sidney Sheldon to that Monk Who Sold His Ferrari author.

i read my first book when i was around maybe 6-7 years. it was a Noddy book by Enid Blyton. However, i got hooked to reading only when i was 13-14 when i started reading the famous five series by Enid Blyton. Since then there has been no looking back :) :)

Haha, me too... the very first book I read or had read to me (both apply) was a book of fairy tales - having everything from Cinderella to Sleeping Beauty to Hansel and Gretel, even Gulliver's Travels (the abridged version).

The first story book I picked to read was at a Scholastic book fair, and I picked an R L Stein horror book based on werewolves when I was 9 years old. (Terrified me so much I stopped reading)

A Year later I started with Malory Towers - Love those books to this date! Then Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Agatha Christie, Robin Cook and Dan Brown followed ;)

At what age? I don't remember exactly. I was definitely younger than 5, because I remember that Grandma stories book which my uncle gave me on my 3rd birthday. My parents used to get me simple comics as stuff.

My first proper book which I read around the age of five was an abridged version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which my Mom got me. It used to be her favorite childhood book and became mine too :)

Then followed Enid Blyton (EVERYTHING by her!), Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Goosebumps, illustrated Classics and what not!

I think this was only possible because both my parents are avid readers, and I'm really glad they introduced me to reading :)

Rakhi, I used to read Poombatta cover to cover. Used to eagerly wait for it to arrive, then have a quarrel with brother [I won usually B-) ] . I even used to read and reread old Poombattas. Balarama, Chandamama, Champak were not monthly reads, those were on an 'as and when' basis.
Then I found out Tinkle and Target.
Adulthood magazine was Reader's digest, and occasional left over Women's era.
But its a few years since I have given up on Magazines

Happy to see someone like me. I started off with all those comics along with Digest, Amar Chitra Kadha, Boban and Molly. Had a huge collection of Poombatta, Balarama, Balabhumi, Balamangalam, Champak, CW, Tinkle till last year. Mom gave them away, which is something we still fight on.

First proper big English novel was a Hardy Boys Mystery of Screaming Clock. Read it during class hours book being kept under the desk. My school days were mostly in detective stories and classics. :)

Same with me..I would complete one novel of hardy boys or Nancy drew very early before due date and often run to librarian to let me reissue other novels early. I really love mysteries..:)

Well i don't exactly remember when exactly i started to read....maybe it was when i first learnt to read....my passion for books is even more older....it is since the time i didn't evn knw to read....i would always resquest my mum n masi to read stories in summer afternoons.....that were my first days in the world of books n fiction....but those tyms i used to read short stories....i have started readings novels n books on some serious topics by the finals of my std 7th...thats all...☺

The first book to get me interested in reading was "Famous Five" by Enid Blyton at the age of 13. It was an assignment in the school to pick any novel and read it. After that, I started reading all the Enid Blyton books.

I started very early but I don't remember exactly when... The first conscious recollection that I have is of a book fair in school in the first standard and I pestered my mom to buy a book which had wonderful illustrations... don't remember the name of that book.

i was never interested in dolls, toys, etc...my father taught me how to read...he used to read me stories from champak and i used to repeat them...from what i recall i started reading novels when i was 13 and my first novel was p&p by jane austen...i had a chapter of this book in my eng course book in school...i liked it so much that i got the book and finished it i also started hanging out in library of our school ...from there my love for books kept on increasing and now i can't imagine my life without them......

I too had read Monte Cristo when I was 11 or 12, the unabridged version, but in Malayalam. It was an adventurous experience at that time. I tried reading the English version again, but that magic was not there. It fell flat.
