I am on a roll here... read and love The Marrow of Tradition. Then, read and loved even more The Autobiography of An Ex-Colored Man.Anyone have a suggestion to a good follow up to these two?
I recently read Toni Morrison's latest novel A Mercy, which I loved. It's such a slim, spare novel and yet Florens' unique voice and her heartbreaking journey have really stayed with me.... My full review can be read at http://shimosreadinglist.blogspot.com...

I finished If Sons, Then Heirs. I think I'll wait for the discussion on this one to give my opinion.Last night I started They Tell Me of a Home. I don't remember who on here recommended it, but can I say a BIG thank you!!??!?! Already, this book is fantastic and has drawn me in. I stayed up way too late last night reading it. If this has not already been discussed, I nominate it for a future book discussion.

Just finished If Sons, Then Heirs. I started Silver Sparrow. I'll wait to discuss If Sons, Then Heirs with the rest of the group. Happy Reading!
have i recommended Rakesh Satyal's Blue Boy? Fabulous. It covers already-covered territory (queer boy's coming of age) in a brilliantly original way -- not last because it deals with issues of immigration and displacement very well -- and, surprisingly, quite joyfully.

Thanks, Jo. I can't wait to read this one. I wonder if we can still nominate books to be included in the poll or was that a one time thing. I would add this one.

Has anyone read Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward yet? That along with Marable Manning'sMalcolm X: A Life of Reinvention are finalists for the National Book Award in the fiction and non-fiction categories. They were announced today.
Wasn't that a great surprise? I haven't read Salvage the Bones yet, but I heard the author speak at the Decatur Book Fair this year and It's definitely one that I want to read.
Martha Southgate's The Taste of Salt is an excellent read! Intelligent, important, revealing, smart...what a talented writer.
2 books by Kwei Quartey Wife of Other Gods and Children of the Street - excellent! Both well worth reading, waiting for his 3rd book.
Barbara wrote: "2 books by Kwei Quartey Wife of Other Gods and Children of the Street - excellent! Both well worth reading, waiting for his 3rd book."I read the first of Kwei Quartey's books, and am looking forward to reading the second. Ironically they are not available here in Ghana!
I understand that African American authors can not sell their books in Africa - although Kwei Quartey is from Ghana. When the latest Kubu book came out Death of a Mantis in South Africa - I was lucky to have a friend visiting there at the time and she bought the book for me - otherwise we had to wait another 6 months. Doesn't seem right. I love reading the mystery books from South Africa, well I love mysteries, so Africa has opened an entire new "continent" for me. I hope there is an exchange of books between all the countries.
Hi, has anyone read "Someone Knows My Name" by Lawrence Hill? I would like to read it in December or January :-)
One of my all time favorites! We discussed it in 2009. The discussion is in 2 parts:http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Thank you Wilhelmina for the links! And Barabara, why haven't you finished the book, if I may ask? (Was it content related?)
I just recently completed "Perfect Peace" by Daniel Black. This is a book that is hard to put down. This is the story of a mother, after having six boys and wanting a girl so badly decides to bring her son up as a girl, until the age of eight at which time she reveals to the family and community that he is a girl. This is an absolutely wonderful read. If you try it, tell me how you like it.
If you a fan of Langston Hughes's, his "The Best of Simple" (American Century Series Ac39) is sharp & quick-witted...very funny.
Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this. Author Bernice McFadden is going to be suggesting new books every month on http://www.chinechicks.com. Producer Amy J. Moore is the owner of Cinechicks and the producer who found and started the series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. I have been trying to get the series back for a second season, and over a year ago I introduced Amy Moore and Bernice McFadden. The two of them clicked. So while Miss Moore is helping us to try and get a second season of the series (and we would love your comments) Miss McFadden is going to be promoting books each month. Thank you ahead of time.
Wilhelmina wrote: "Thanks, Barbara!"I think I posted this in 2 places, but this was a great of idea of yours. Amy is also excited about the book idea. B
My local Amsterdam bookstore gave me a copy of The Kid by Sapphire, as a Thanksgiving present. I think the book came out last February, and the cover looks amazing. I haven't read any of Sapphire's books yet, although I've seen the movie Precious (which is based on her previous novel Push). I am very curious!
I wasn't sure where to put this, but i just wanted to let you all know that the Kindle version of The Air Between Us: A Novel by Deborah Johnson is on sale for $.99.

I haven't read it yet, but All Shot Up by Chester Himes is available on Kindle today (Cyber Monday at Amazon) for $1.99. A must-read classic.

Thanks for that recommendation, Sarah. His Yesterday Will Make You Cry is an interesting read as well.

Recommend: "The Resurrection of Nat Turner" by Sharon Ewell Foster. Finished: When Rain Falls scheduled to be released March 2012 and The Blood Done Signed my Name by M Ann Ricks. (not sure if you do inspirational or Christian Fiction books with meanings).
I write nonfiction/spiritual books; aside from that a YA inspirational drama (more drama) called "Mirror Beware!" available as eBook and some books may be still available and seeking a new publisher for this book.
This is slightly off topic, but I don't know where else to put this.I am currently finishing up the non-fiction book Chasing Chiles: Hot Spots Along the Pepper Trail. There is a section in it discussing the fish pepper in the mid-Atlantic region, its decline, its listing by Slow Food as an endangered heritage food.
The talk with Michael Twitty, who is the curator of Landreth Seeds' African American Heritage Collection. If there are any gardeners here (besides me!) there are some amazing looking heirlooms offered: http://www.landrethseeds.com/catalog/... I may need to try their turnip greens--I love the greens, but not the turnips themselves so much lol. Their offering is right up my alley :)
If this is too off topic, please mods, feel free to delete.

Oh this is not off topic for me. I'm a foodie and a gardener. I want the book and I will be looking at the Heritage collection. My day is made.

I just finished Song Yet SungI'm looking for similiar books, or any literature that's not romances that are actually written by African-Americans or Native Americans. I want more literature than urban. The Darkest Child is another novel that I enjoyed. I had quite a few on my to-read list that weren't written by AA, and I'm having a hard time finding some. Thanks!
(I've read most of the oldies.)
I am reading Kindred and I am really liking it. I can't believe I haven't read her stuff before. It is only $4.95 through Amazon for the Kindle.

Ah, finished. Loved is an understatement. I do not know how I shall do this book justice in a review. By far, in my top five of very, very favorite books.
