Comprehensive How To Use Goodreads + Tips Of The Day

It probably depends on what is on offer at any particular time. I have come across many in the last year and a half that were not avail to AU. And ditto not to some other countries. Having said that there is always a fair number that are open to AU.

I just had a look now and while I didn't look at all of the books on offer it seems every one I checked is currently open to AU. However if you click the "previous winners" many of those books were not open to AU. When I first found the giveaway page, books avail to AU were in the minority and it seems now more Australian publishers are getting in on the act. I've won 3 books since joining. One was from a USA publisher the latter 2 from Australian publishers. There seems to be more Aussie publishers willing to give GR a go. ;) I just wanted to mention that not all books have been avail to AU, because initially I was disappointed - as I am about the fact that there is still not GR bookswap set up for AU.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're changing their marketing since so many people from outside the US are joining Goodreads everyday. They probably realise they should include other countries as well.:)

Thanks Cheryl, I'm going to 'compare books' with you too! It reminds me of an old dating game show we had in Australia called 'Perfect Match'. There was a little robot there who would recite people's compatibility percentages in a fake tinny voice. If we get over 85% the same on Goodreads does that mean we should go out on a date??!! LOL

Have you checked out the Goodreads Giveaways page? There are hundreds of books that authors have listed that you may receive if you register your interest. In retur..."
I was amazed so many books were available but disaappointed when I realised that not all were available to Australia. I have put my name on those...
I do not get a lot of time to play around in Goodreads and I do get distracted by Listopia (:))and by what my friends are reading.... I do not post many comments because I don't need to...
Thanks heaps Mandy for the links to pictures .. I have checked out some of them and have picked a couple of favoraites... I am usually the one in my family with the camera or I am in a group shot so a photo of me by myself for the profile shot is not something I have currently....

> Mandy, a virtual date should be safe enough... ;)
Ha, I scored 82% with both you Cheryl and Mandy. Maybe we could make it a threesome. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing which picture you choose Jenny!
That's why I added 'cyborg' to my name. I was in group with another Gail in it. It got very confussing, I was confused. If you notice the Welsh David added the Welsh spelling to his name so that we could easily identify him.

Use the following HTML:
a href="http://www.goodreads.com">my link textbut replace the sample URL with the one you want and "my link text" with "my group" (or whatever). And put carets < > around the outside (before and after the "a"s).

I never knew these things <>, were called carets! You learn something new every day!:) Thanks for the great tip Cheryl. Happy geocaching today!

P.S. My favourite is the picture of Aussie thongs on page 3. I'm very tempted to change my avatar for that one!! lol

Thanks for adding your photos to the group photos Brenda! I love them. Gosh you really get around... Great Travels!!

Just added some more, Mandy. We've had some lovely trips in the last couple of years since my hubby retired!

Don't worry, it's tricky. I'll try another way of explaining it:
For a heart type
&
then
hearts
then
;
In other words, type the 'and' symbol then the word 'hearts' then a semi colon. Altogether with no spaces. Then press the preview button (below this comments box) and you should see a heart instead of the letters/symbols.

Works for me. :) ☻

It's cute isn't it. I always wondered how they did it and found the explanation in another group yesterday...
There is another way of doing it. If you go to microsoft word and click on insert, then symbol then simply choose a symbol and cut and paste from word to GR you get a whole array of symbols. eg

Oh, now you are REALLY confusing me!!! I've managed the ♥, give me some time with the other fancy stuff!! :)
Do you have access to a list of symbols Mandy? or is it an alternative font?

I think it's an alternative font cause when I paste it it comes out as a normal letter.
I certainly am, Carmel! I have an IT genius for a son, and whenever I have a problem, I'm afraid I'm in touch with him pretty quickly!! But I'm managing to pick up a LITTLE bit! :)
Mandy have you looked for symbol's on your tool bar? They might be located in a different spot.

No I've looked around. I don't think it's exactly the same program as yours. Oh well, I'll just sit back and marvel at the beauty of your posts!!:D
Darn, now I will have to stick lots of symbol's in my posts. You could always copy and paste them from my posts to a word doc and save them see if that works.

P.S. ARE YOU POKING YOUR TONGUE OUT AT ME!! NAUGHTY GIRL. LOL
I like the LL & PP as well, I haven't been tempted to change them.
Would I poke my tongue at you that would be rude.

So, that's good to know. *And* what it means beyond the obvious is, please write reviews. Even the most brief will tell us more than the stars. In this example, maybe 1 star means you didn't like a book, but the fact is, you really really hated it cuz it was ugly and stupid. Well, say so in a review!
Reading that discussion reveals a related issue - some people use the stars differently. They have their own ideas of what makes a one star book or a five star book. They should explain what they mean in a review.
Or people might want to say 'this was just a lame trashy genre mm pb but I personally loved it' so they don't know whether to give it 5 stars for their personal reaction or 2 stars as a critical objective opinion. I'd suggest, give it 4 stars and write a brief review. I've done that 'explain a compromise strategy' for books I didn't love but could tell were very well-wrtten, as well.
Or, one final related thought, it is ok to write a review and not give any stars at all, if that's what fits your personal system best. As rivka clarified, giving a book zero stars won't drag its average rating down.
I have had a quick look through the comments and cant see anything about this but sorry if I am repeating a question!
How do I tag books in my comments? I have seen it done where just the name is tagged and I have also seen it done where the picture of the book comes up??

From msg1. If you are still stuck let me know.
ADDING AN AUTHOR OR BOOK LINK TO YOUR COMMENTS
To add a link to an author or book title or display a book cover in your comments, click on "add book/author" which is located just above the box you write your comments in. Once it's open you will see at the bottom you can choose "cover" instead of title if you prefer to display a picture of the book. Adding links instead of just typing the title will link this topic to the book's home page and increases the profile of the book and our group.

When I created my GR group, Fans of Maps, GR provided for me a field in which I could enter tags. This mean that I could make my group more easily found by members interested in it, because I could put tags for "maps" and "geography" and "geocaching" "journey" and "travel" and "cartography in that field, and anyone searching for a group about "travel" would get the result of my group.
Iow, to 'tag' something generally means to attach searchable terms to it. And that's a wonderful tool of modern computing - so thanks for pushing me to add it to this How To topic!

I'm LOVING this new feature from Goodreads. It lists all new releases from authors on your shelves or in your preferred genre. You can either go to this site to check or you can tick that you want to receive the 'New Releases' email. Check now to see what's out for November.

OMG the next Robert Jordan book is out! Thanks Mandy. Oh I likelove that new feature. Drat & I was trying to keep my TBR under control.
Books mentioned in this topic
Peter Brock: How Good is This! (other topics)Frankenstein (other topics)
On the Banks of Plum Creek (other topics)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (other topics)
The Ghosts of Ashbury High (other topics)
This would be even more helpful if I did sort by genre and was looking for someone who reads a lot of that genre. I could then find somebody to follow, somebody whose taste I trust.
What's also interesting is that if I compare "all" of Mandy's books with "all" of mine we're 81% similar. But our book compatibility (also available in the upper right corner of the compare books page) gives us an 86% compatibility. Weird set of numbers; makes me go hmm....
Have fun exploring - get to know your friends better - maybe make new friends!
