Jess Lane (catsofdeath) | 47 comments I finished Dirk Gently's Holistix Detective Agency. Awesome book I would literally laugh out loud and my husband would ask what was so funny and the only answer is you have to read the book.

I couldn't agree more with the assessment of "If On a Winter's Night a Traveler" as a MUST to read before you die!
One my my favorites!

I love these Gothic tales!

I really liked it!"

Mark wrote: "Death and a Penguin - Andre Kurkov"

I loved Death as the narrator. It made the story so much more interesting to me.

message 4505: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey (jeff_nardecchia) Last one I finished was "The Picture of Dorian Gray" but "The Virgin Suicides" was the last one on the list I really enjoyed.

Lauli | 263 comments The Handmaid's Tale. Loved it! Hats off for Atwood writing science fiction.

Julie (readerjules) La Liseuse wrote: "The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton"

How was it? I am going to be reading it shortly.

Deanne | 681 comments Almost finished V by Pynchon, seems to be chaotic but full of brilliant scenes and strange characters. Think I'll read Vineland next.

May I recommend Summer as a Wharton book you might want to read? A later novel, a matured world view.

message 4513: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliatruter) I just finished The Namesake. It was a good book, but I found it a bit hard to read. The paragraphs are very long and there isn't a lot of dialogue. Maybe I'm just not used to the style ... I give it a 3 star - worth reading though.

message 4514: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliatruter) Jeffrey wrote: "Last one I finished was "The Picture of Dorian Gray" but "The Virgin Suicides" was the last one on the list I really enjoyed."

Jeffrey - did you read "Middlesex"? It's on my Top 10 list. "The Virgin Suicides" is on my to read list - I'm wondering if it is as brilliant as "Middlesex" ...

message 4515: by laut (new)

laut | 28 comments I just finished Cloud Atlas. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to, and it's definitely one of the books that makes me enjoy using this list to find new things to read.

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and loved it.

message 4517: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished Never Let Me Go. The full impact still hasn't hit me, what a depressing read, but it is thoroughly thought provoking.

message 4518: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Fifty pages from the end of Vineland by Pynchon, more a comedy than anything.

I'm glad to hear that. I started this book a while ago but didn't get into it. It keeps looking at me from my bookshelf and I keep meaning to give it another go.

message 4520: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas - Gertrude Stein

Mostly name dropping, but interesting where it actually tells something about the famous people Alice and Gertrude befriended and encountered. It, of course, is not by Alice and is not about her either!

message 4521: by Craig (new)

Craig | 241 comments Mysteries of Udolpho -Radcliffe

Despite the hypergothic settings, descriptions, and characters, this work fell sluggishly flat for me.

message 4522: by Erin (new)

Erin | 2 comments Just read 39 Steps by John Buchan. It wasn't bad but I didn't love it. And the movie is definitely LOOSELY based on the book.

Asa | 65 comments I've finally finished Middlemarch; it took time but was worth it. Over the weekend I reread Wharton's The Age of Innocence and it was just as good this time.

Please read this review Craig. We read Udopho for a group read. I bet you will get a laugh out of it. Sherri is a very good snarky writer. She is a hoot! Loved her review!

Foxontherun | 4 comments Just finished "The Master and Margarita" and I really enjoyed it, although it was slow at the start. It was a great glimpse of Soviet dark humor and social satire.

message 4528: by El (new)

El Finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog last night. Solid 3 stars from me.

message 4529: by Mike (new)

Mike | 78 comments I just finished The Trial by Kafka. I think his friend should have burned all his unpublished books as Kafka requested. ONE STAR!

message 4530: by Max (new)

Max (maxbob) Hello everyone - this is my first post here - I've just finished Siddhartha - 5* in my opinion, a fantastic read. If you haven't read it yet, give it a try :D

message 4531: by Hubert (new)

Hubert | 63 comments Atwood Margaret's The Blind Assassin - a bit overwritten but definitely talented author and compelling setup for a novel.

message 4532: by Lenifer (new)

Lenifer | 1 comments Max - Siddhartha I also loved.

I just finished Age of Innocence, touching and beautiful.

Now I start with Ulysses. I hope I can finish it in 100 days - that is a part of my 100 day challenge (I wanted to read that one for a long long time)

message 4533: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Finished The Names by DeLillo and really enjoyed the plot, probably my favourite book of his on the list.

Tanya (aka ListObsessedReader) (listobsessed) | 108 comments Just finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams and The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Both amazing in very different ways!

Handmaid's Tale is disturbing, but a wonderful book nonetheless. The last book I finished was
The Picture of Dorian Gray. I can't really say it was my favorite, but definitely not a bad read.

I've heard wonderful things.

message 4538: by Max (new)

Max (maxbob) To everyone writing about the Master and Margarita - that is one of my favourite books of all time and I was so glad to see it in this list :D

@Lenifer - I've got 'Age of Innocence' on my (rather long) list of books to read - I'm reading from a-z of author's I've never read before. I'm just finishing 'H' at the moment...

message 4539: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments At long last I have finished The Remains of the Day. Up until the last 100 pages I would have given it 2*s but then it became more interesting. I understand his sublety and agree that his prose is masterful but it was still a struggle to get through this for me.

Mikela | 378 comments Just finished Siddhartha and loved it.

Finished Cakes and Ale yesterday. It was decent but definitely not his best.

message 4542: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Finished The House of Mirth today. I liked it, though towards the middle it sagged somewhat.

message 4543: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne

A re-read from years ago. I had forgotten so much of the story! Fully enjoyed it!

Lauli | 263 comments Judith wrote: "The Scarlet Letter - Nathaniel Hawthorne

Borges famously said that Hawthorne was a great story writer but a poor novelist, especially as regards characterisation. I think The Scarlet Letter definitely proves him wrong.

message 4545: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth (theelisabethal) I finished Interview with a Vampire and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy... I enjoyed both, but I don't think they are the best of what literature has to offer. There are books in the SciFi genre that have more literary value than Hitchhikers.

message 4546: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments The Kreutzer Sonata - Tolstoy

Another quick but fascinating read!

message 4547: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 106 comments Just finished Lord of the Flies, I've never read it before. I can definitely see why it's a classic though it's not one of my favourites.

message 4548: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) just finished The Swimming-Pool Library by alan hollinghurst. ugh, i despised it!

message 4549: by Kate S (new)

Kate S | 39 comments Just finished Slaughterhouse-Five. Oddly enough it was just what I remembered from my first reading in high school. . .

message 4550: by Asa (new)

Asa | 65 comments Lessing's The Golden Notebook; parts of it were good, parts very annoying.
