Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just completed Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison.

message 1802: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments I just finished Henderson the Rain King. What a great book!

message 1803: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 27 comments The Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemingway. Finished this in one quick sitting.

message 1805: by Linda (new)

Linda Just finished Life of Pi and I really enjoyed it, except I got a bit bogged down with all the Hindu references, since I don't know much about that religion or its (many) gods, and some of it was a little gruesome.

message 1807: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 7 comments "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie. It was about 300 pages too long, but there were a number of great passages that made it all worth it.

message 1808: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments Finally finished Vanity Fair. I'm very glad that I read it, although I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. Parts were very boring and pointless, but I think it describes society very well.

message 1810: by Liz M (last edited Jul 12, 2009 06:42AM) (new)

Liz M From the 2008 list: Memories of Rain is a fluid, novel that interweaves events over a few days with the narrator's thoughts, feelings, and memories, including bits of poetry by Tagore. Although short and beautifully written, it takes a fair amount of focus to follow.

message 1811: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (elizac) | 72 comments I just finished Don Quixote

message 1812: by Kristin (new)

Kristin I just finished Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time. It took me a year and a half, but I finally made it!

message 1813: by Linda (new)

Linda I finally finished The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It took me a while because it just seemed to drag on for me, and I kept putting it aside and reading other things, then coming back to it. And since I am pro-life it was difficult for me to enjoy it with all the incidences of unwanted babies and abortions.

message 1814: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (darcy-elizabeth) | 34 comments Just finished 1984 by George Orwell

Paula | 57 comments Darcy wrote: "Just finished 1984 by George Orwell"

What did you think? I just read it earlier this year and I couldn't put it down.

message 1816: by Katie (new)

Katie Casey (ktcasey9) | 1 comments Just finished The Bell Jar - it was a good one - really witty. I'm now at 75/1001. Whew.

message 1817: by ShradS (new)

ShradS | 1 comments I finished "The Lost Throne" by Chris Kuzneski.

message 1818: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments I just completed Ragtime. I really enjoyed it.

message 1820: by Katharine (new)

Katharine | 19 comments I am almost finished with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, it was a lot shorter than I expected but I have really enjoyed reading it.

message 1821: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Chambers | 60 comments Just finished Alias Grace/Margaret Atwood, Girl With Green Eyes/Edna O'Brien, and Poisonwood Bible/Barbara Kingsolver

message 1822: by Paula (new)

Paula | 57 comments Jessica wrote: "Just finished Alias Grace/Margaret Atwood, Girl With Green Eyes/Edna O'Brien, and Poisonwood Bible/Barbara Kingsolver"

Wow - those are three really solid books to complete from this list - impressive!

message 1824: by Bharath kumar (new)

Bharath kumar (sbharathind) | 2 comments I HAVE just know finished "kite runner"

message 1825: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I finished "Fathers and Sons" by Turgenev yesterday.
I thought it was thought provoking yet also light and amusing ...just plain enjoyable.

message 1826: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I just finished The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. It was a pretty good book that dealt with heavy issues in a measured, distant, yet personal manner. While the book was simple it was built on many complexities -- the relationship, Holocaust, coming of age, etc. This is one of those books that needs to sink in before I can really figure out what I thought of it.

message 1827: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Finished Where Angels Fear to Tread the other day, and am still not quite sure how I feel about it.

message 1828: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Just finished Three trapped tigers by Infante, enjoyable but jumped around a lot.
Stacie
Saw Where Angels Fear To Tread. Helena Bonham-Carter and Helen Mirren were in it, great adaptation. Think it was made in the 1990's.

message 1829: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Thanks. I didn't realize it was made into a movie. I will have to add that to my Netflix list.

message 1830: by Knarik (new)

Knarik Hi Everyone! I am new here and have just been looking through the list. There are many great books there!
I have just finished Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South.

message 1831: by Linda (new)

Linda Welcome to the "1001 Books" group! As you can see, you have your work cut out for you if you plan to work your way through the List. But have fun and I suggest you pay attention to the commentary of others. It will definitely help you in making your choices - at least it has for me.

So have you figured out how many you've read off the list? There is a discussion thread for that...

message 1832: by Laura (new)

Laura (chrstjoy) | 12 comments Ovid' Metamorphoses. Boy, am I glad to get that book checked off!

message 1836: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo, very very good.

message 1837: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Dead Babies by Martin Amis

message 1838: by Judith (last edited Jul 27, 2009 07:19AM) (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Although it has been removed from the latest version of the list, I have to recommend "Henderson The Rain King" by Bellow to everyone who appreciates a vivid imagination and a bit of fun! I was surprised since it was nothing like either of the other two Bellow novels I've read and delighted in its freshness.

message 1839: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Finished War and Peace yesterday and Cannery Row today. War and Peace was amazing, well worth the time and effort.
Cannery Row was good as well, I really like Steinbeck, but I definitely prefer East of Eden to this one.

Melissa (So Cal Gal) | 8 comments I just finished "Jane Eyre" it was fantastic, I can not believe I waited this long to read it.

I read Jane Eyre last year, Melissa, and I felt the same way ... I've had it on my shelf for years and years and never read it - and it's so good!

Knarik Michelle wrote: "I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo, very very good. "

this is one of my favorites, too. Another one by the same author is Three Musketeers, I will recommend, it is a great book.

Thanks Paula! Now I've got a chapter left in "The World According To Garp"-not sure how i haven't read that one yet...

message 1844: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I recently finished reading Anthem as my first Ayn Rand book. It was a quick read and the voice and images are still floating in my mind. As with all her books, this one was definitely a platform for conveying a part of her objectivism philisophy (specifically the "I" over "we" portion). While I can't say I agree with all that was presented through the story, it did enhance my interest in reading her larger novels.

message 1845: by Ana (new)

Ana Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I found it predictable.

message 1846: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments "Flaubert's Parrot" - Julian Barnes

I wish I had such a treatment of each of the artists I admire. Wonderfully informative, insightful, humorous and moving.

message 1848: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (eevee) the curious incident if the dog in the night time by Marc Haddon

message 1849: by Knarik (new)

Knarik was it good?
