Lenoir | 27 comments The Last of Mr Norris and Good-Bye Berlin by Chistopher Isherwood. I much preferred the latter.

message 1402: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Babbitt.

message 1403: by Stef (new)

Stef (buch_ratte) | 5 comments I just finished THE NEW YORK TIROLOGY by Paul Auster. Not the best book I ever read but I will give him another try.

message 1404: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I finished Crash by Ballard this evening. I can sum up the novel in these words which appear continuously: stylised flowering wounds automobile crash logic death. I felt alienated by it as I don't drive and never have had.

message 1405: by Linda (new)

Linda Of Mice and Men - again. Reread it in preparation to teach it in my Am. Lit. class.

message 1406: by Linda (new)

Linda Stacie - what did you think of Babbitt? I have it on my shelf and was thinking of picking it up after I finish The Bluest Eye.

message 1407: by Gaston (new)

Gaston | 26 comments The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Haunting, creepy, and a damn good book.

message 1408: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 290 comments Quicksilver and The System of the World by Neal Stephenson, I didn't like it. It was to shattered for me.

message 1409: by Stephanie "Jedigal" (new)

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Junky The Definitive Text of Junk

I don't get it. I'll have to go home and read the blurb in 1001-B to see what they think makes it a must read. I say skip it. A QUICK read though...

Also, nothing experimental (akin to Naked Lunch or other William S. Burroughs titles) here.

message 1410: by Silver (new)

Silver | 313 comments I just finnished The Handmaid's Tale. Really enjoyed it.

message 1411: by Leora (new)

Leora | 40 comments Finished 'Brideshead Revisited' by Evelyn Waugh today, coincidentally for another book group. Not really seeing what's so great about the book. I had to push myself to finish, luckily it's only 350 pages.

message 1412: by Pearl (new)

Pearl (puuurlie) | 6 comments I just finshed 'The Pianist' by Waldslaw Spilzman, excellent book!

message 1413: by Chel (new)

Chel | 380 comments I just finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams. It was terrific and very funny in parts.

message 1414: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I just finished Love in the Time of Cholera. It was enjoyable enough but will not make it onto my favorites list. It was beautifully written and the characters were well drawn, but it really didn't have much of a plot. I felt that the view we were allowed was very narrow. I did find the latter third of the book to be very touching and that portion will probably linger in my mind.

I found the writing was very different from the magical realism in Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude. I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as I enjoyed 100 Years, probably because 100 Years had much more going on in it.

message 1415: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I just finished I'm Not Scared. It was very quick, I read it all today. I probably wouldn't have heard of it if not for this group, and I really liked it.

message 1416: by Denise (new)

Denise | 231 comments Kristi, I read the description of I'm Not Scared and it sounds like the plot of an Italian movie I saw once. I don't remember if the title is the same, but the movie was really good.

message 1417: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Just finished The Handmaid's Tale for another group read here at Goodreads. I enjoyed it a lot - recently read Stolen Innocence about Warren Jeffs and his sect and I see a lot of similarities...!

message 1418: by Eva (last edited Mar 22, 2009 07:07AM) (new)

Eva | 60 comments Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It was an easy read and while I read it I thought it was so-so, but afterwards I find myself thinking about it a lot.

message 1419: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments Denise, I believe that it was a movie also. It was written in Italian, and I think the movie was in Italian, too.

I just finished The House in Paris.

message 1420: by christine. (new)

christine. (futurememory) | 6 comments Just finished The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I thought it was okay; nothing to really get excited over. I really thought I'd like it more, but it was a pretty quick read, so I have absolutely no complaints. It's not like I wasted my time.

message 1421: by Susan (new)

Susan | 1 comments Jon wrote: "I read A Home at the End of the World A Novel Michael Cunningham- ..."

You should read Flesh & Blood - it's my favorite Cunningham

message 1422: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments Finally finished The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. It seems like it took me a while. Great book!

message 1423: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Finished Wild Decembers by Edna O'Brien last night. Not a list book but O'Brien has three books on the list. Most recently finished list books are Voltaire's Candide and At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft.

message 1424: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I just finished the Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie, which I LOVED! Now I want to read more of her books (because, you know, my to-read list isn't long enough)

message 1425: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Linda wrote: "Stacie - what did you think of Babbitt? I have it on my shelf and was thinking of picking it up after I finish The Bluest Eye. "

Linda, I was not a fan of it. I don't want to deter you from reading it, but if you have other books to read, I would suggest picking those up first. :)

message 1426: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments The Lover by Marguerite Duras. It only took a couple of hours.

message 1427: by Dean (new)

Dean Emma wrote: "Finally finished The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. It seems..."

I loved Kavalier & Clay and highly recommend The Yiddish Policemans Union also. Other Chabon books I've tried to read were just okay but these latest two seem to be a writer finding his voice.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) In the last week I've read Mao II by Don DeLillo and How Late it Was, How Late by James Kelman. The first one was okay but the Kelman was amazing.

Melissa (So Cal Gal) | 8 comments I just finished the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. I started Lady Chatterley Lover last night.

message 1430: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (elizac) | 72 comments I just finished The House in Paris I had a hard time finishing this one.

message 1431: by Susan (new)

Susan | 28 comments Just finished The Bluest Eye. Wonderful character descriptions, it made me feel sad.

message 1432: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Just finished Fanny Hill, or Memoirs of a woman of Pleasure. I didn't enjoy it a lot but appreciate why it's on the list and it was somewhat interesting to read.

message 1433: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (afderrick) | 87 comments I just finished Watership Down. I know it's not on the list, but it should be. Talking Rabbits... HA!

message 1434: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Great Expectations

message 1435: by Emma (new)

Dean, thanks for the recommendation. My copy of Kavalier & Clay included at the end an excerpt of the first 6 pages from The Yiddish Policemen's Union and I was definitely drawn in. Before this I had only seen, and enjoyed, the Wonder Boys movie.

message 1436: by Erica (new)

Erica | 2 comments The Remains of the Day. I found myself chuckling out loud quite a bit while reading this, and I found several passages I wanted to read to my coworkers, much to their dismay. Great development of the character's voice. I would definitely recommend this fun read!

message 1437: by Julie (new)

Julie (juliemoncton) | 54 comments I just finished Anna Karenina. I read this in high school and hated it. This time I listened to it in audio. It was long (36 hours!), but beautifully narrated by Davina Porter. Not sure if it was because I listened to it this time, but I really enjoyed the book - great classic and worth another read if you didn't like it the first time around. I also finished The Handmaid's Tale (which was pretty good) and The Virgin Suicides (only so so for me). OK - enough depressing books about women's lives - I'm starting The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for something light and funny.

Eliza (elizac) | 72 comments Emma wrote:

I really liked it. It's a short read only about 200 pages so I read it in one sitting. It's one of the books I would never have picked up if it hadn't been for this book group but I'm really glad I did.

message 1447: by Emma (new)

Emma (mnium) | 135 comments John wrote: "I just finished East of Eden and I gave it five stars. It will be one of those books like Heart of Darkness, Crime and Punishment, and Brave New World that will stick with me for a long time."

John, I have not read the book yet, but I rented the 1955 Elia Kazan movie recently, partly because I had never seen James Dean in anything before. I found the character development of Cal and Aron thoroughly unbelievable, which I'm sure is not the case with the book. It's like they switch places overnight, with Aron going from golden boy to surly and vice versa with Cal.

message 1448: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I really liked it!

message 1449: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth 1984. Very good. One of my favorites from the list so far.

message 1450: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I also just finished 1984 and loved it. .
