Cam | 25 comments Slaughterhouse Five.

message 7709: by Stephanie "Jedigal" (new)

Stephanie "Jedigal" (jedigal) | 270 comments Anna Karenina! I LOVED it!!! 5* and on my definitely read again list, despite the length. Wow. :o)

message 7710: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments Lolita...despite the subject of the book, I found it an engaging, darkly humorous read that actually went very quickly for me! Also finished a very HEAVY, non list book read, The Lion & the Throne: The Life & Times of Sir Edward Coke....

message 7711: by Cayenne (new)

Cayenne | 4 comments Just finished The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

message 7712: by Dee (new)

Dee (deinonychus) | 243 comments Cain by José Saramago. A bizarre, surrealist take on the familiar story. Not really sure what to make of it, though it was a fun read.

message 7713: by Cam (new)

Cam | 25 comments The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Blech.

message 7714: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 29, 2013 07:43PM) (new)

Heh, I actually liked it, even if I found parts heavy handed.

The Grapes of Wrath. It was terrible, it was beautiful and I cried like a baby. True Steinbeck all around.

message 7715: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I finished reading Honore de Balzac's Pere Goriot. It was interesting, a lot better than Cousin Bette IMO (which I believe isn't a list book, but anyway)

message 7716: by Cayenne (new)

Cayenne | 4 comments Just finished Amok and Other Stories by Stefan Zweig (of which only Amok is on the list). I definitely enjoyed this suicide-centric collection, although it was definitely a bit of a downer after House of Mirth!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Lianne wrote: "I finished reading Honore de Balzac's Pere Goriot. It was interesting, a lot better than Cousin Bette IMO (which I believe isn't a list book, but anyway)"

Interesting. I thought Cousin Bette more enjoyable than Pere Goriot.

Cheery, lol. I'm curious now that I see it described thus

I finished The Virgin Suicides. Great way of storytelling, but very depressing in the end.

message 7720: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments I just finished The Good Earth, VERY good, surprisingly fast read. It read, like a fable almost.....

message 7721: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Just finished The Grapes of Wrath and feel rather wrecked. Wow. Haunting.

Sadly, I believe the author died recently.

Beautifully written disturbing subject matter. 4/5

Amber (panduhbear) | 33 comments Casey wrote: "Pamela...it was tortuous"

Clarissa is 4x its length and also, unfortunately, on the list. Albeit a little easier to bear, his longwindedness never quite goes away.

Eek! 4x the length of Pamela? I don't know how I am going to get through something else by him. Will probably have to take it in small doses over a long period of time.

message 7737: by James (new)

James (jamesg1955) | 23 comments Took me over a year to get through "Clarissa" - still have my doubts if it was worth it.

message 7738: by Amber (new)

Amber (panduhbear) | 33 comments I'm about halfway through and it's taken me roughly 3 months of nothing but this book. Although I adore Lovelace's scheming I wonder how it made Boxall's list.

message 7739: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 251 comments I've not been reading list books lately, but I did sneak in the very short and fun book, The 39 Steps. Not entirely sure why it's on the list, but I enjoyed it.

message 7740: by Susan (new)

Susan | 31 comments I just finished The Cat's Table. Don't know if it is a list book but I really enjoyed it.

message 7742: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments I've recently finished Rob Roy (boooooring) and Everything That Rises Must Converge delightfully grim).

message 7743: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Tocco (kaylatocco) | 107 comments I recently finished 1984. Very much enjoyed it, but it startles me to realize how close we are coming to living in a world just like the book describes. Crazy.

message 7744: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul I just finished Breakfast at Tiffany's and found it terrific.

message 7748: by James (new)

James Spencer (jspencer78) | 258 comments Finnegans Wake. What an effort, an accomplishment I never thought I would complete but it was worth the work.

message 7749: by Ed (new)

Ed Lehman | 122 comments E.M. Forster's "A Room With A View". This was much lighter reading than I expected. Enjoyed it but once I realized this wasn't some ponderous novel, I expected it to have a few more sillier moments. Still, a very good read.

message 7750: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul "Chess Story" by Stefan Zweig. Not a book I would have predicted I'd like as much as I did.
