I tried to read Of Human Bondage, but just couldn't get into it - didn't like the main character and I knew the direction the story was going to go and just couldn't see pushing through it. I abandoned that and moved on to Villette, which I just finished. I thought it was okay, but didn't like it as well as Jane Eyre, which is one of my all-time favorites. I never really came to love the main character, Lucy Snow, (like I did with Jane) because she was so closed, and I understand that was how the author intended her to be but I just didn't care for her, although I did pity her. Another difficulty I had with the book is that there was a lot of French dialogue, and while I learned French years ago I don't know it well enough now to get all of it - especially since I was doing it as an audiobooks.

FYI: Not a 1001 Books list title.

The Absentee by Maria Edgeworth. Took me 3 weeks to read the 236 pages for some reason, but I really enjoyed it and gave it 5*.

I don't think it's cheating at all. I haven't read this in so long, but I love it. Yes it's short, and yes it's a children's story. But it is so beautifully crafted and so profound that it is one of my favourite books.
Ahhhh 13 clocks! I too felt I had cheated big time.A nice book but it is soooo short especially if your pevious book was an epic.
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen - http://bookbebeautiful.blogspot.com.au/ripped through it pretty quickly, wasn't event too bothered by the politics in it. Looks like a big read but the pace means you can knock it over in a week.
The Power and The Glory by Graham Greene, Marya by Joyce Carol Oates, Portnoy's Complaint by Philip Roth, Death in Venice by Thomas Mann and Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs. That's quite a few books; it kind of looks like I don't have a life....

I can recommend this novel only to hard core Murakami fans and those fully commited to reading every book on the 1001 Books You Should Read... Lists. It is interesting but also vastly longer than it needs to be!
Pere Goriot. Sad commentary, annoying characters, yet something saved it for me a bit, maybe the style. Thankfully not too long.
I just finished The Secret History which was a struggle to get through at first, but the second half of the book moved a lot quicker.

It reminds me of 'The Lord of the Flies', though far better..
VERY WELL WRITTEN!!

That is on TBR pile for a while now. I think I am going to start that next.
Not sure if I should post this or not since they are listed as the complete trilogy. Just finished the Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. I am planning on reading the other two as well. If you have only watched the movies I would definitely read the books. My husband found a copy of the additions that were supposed to be added to some of the other books (including the Hobbit) may have to reread that with those changes.
Crime & Punishment. I almost feel like I deserve a medal for that one, LOL...that one was hard going...
Neuromancer* - Wm. Gibson ****Neuromancer
Groundbreaking sci-fi of the 80's that all sci-fi lovers should read!
Just finished Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls...and glad that's over with. I thought my dislike for Hemingway was just a high school thing...but, no, I still find his writing tedious. There were so many moments where I wanted to scream...."Nobody talks like that!"
I just finished Titus Groan. I was blown away by the absolute beauty of the description, so vivid and darkly humorous. I am excited to read Gormenghast.

When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay PenmanI wanted to read some well-written historical fiction with properly researched background. My research indicated that Sharon Penman has earned a great deal of respect for just those characteristics. After reading the novel, I am now going to read all of her books! Great book!

I don't believe this is a list book.
