Melanie (melwyk) Cynthia wrote: "Nancy wrote: "Finished The Waves by Virginia Woolf. Amazed by her original style of writing and use of language. Glad to finish it though.

I also loved this book when I read it some years ago. Time for a reread, I think! You've inspired me to pick it up again.

Not too impressed with this little book and wonder what its merit were to make the 1001 list.....

message 6807: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) Anna Karenina. It only took me 2 months!

message 6808: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments Ethan Frome which was my second Wharton book from the list. Thought this was a great read and for those of you looking for a quick read to tick another book off the list, then this is it! Brilliant novella.

I'm reading it right now. Almost at a 1000 pages ... still quite a bit to go. But I like it a lot - how did you feel about it?

message 6812: by Craig (new)

Craig | 241 comments What Maisie Knew -Henry James
His writing was a joy to read.

message 6813: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

I liked it a lot, but not going to re-read it in years.. it's so long.

message 6816: by Craig (new)

Craig | 241 comments Kim -Kipling

Meditative and rich. Different than what I expected from what I knew of Kipling's work.

Glorianne | 33 comments Craig wrote: "Kim -Kipling

I just finished that as well. I agree -- not what I expected, but enjoyable.

message 6818: by Diane (new)

Diane (readingrl) | 58 comments I just finished Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. I saw the movie several years ago and expected a book with more mystery, more plot, and faster-paced. I'm slowly learning that not every "1001 book" is extraordinary or enjoyable or good, but there is an interesting or extraordinary element in the book.

message 6819: by Kristel (new)

Kristel (kristelh) I just started and finished the novella, The Judge and His Hangman by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Very good. Highly recommend it and it is a quick read.

message 6820: by Mandy (last edited Nov 02, 2012 11:56PM) (new)

Mandy | 154 comments Just finishd "Out of Africa". Started really well but felt like I limped to the end. As we got closer to the end my interest waned somewhat but I hate to abandon a book so I stuck it out.

message 6821: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments Finished King Solomon's Mines - it was fun! My review is here: http://independentbookreview.wordpres...

message 6822: by Alxandra (new)

Alxandra | 6 comments I just finished The Great Gatsby. I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much.

message 6823: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 251 comments After 4 months, I finished The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights!! Overall I enjoyed it, but I'm also glad to be done with it.

message 6824: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments After 3 months, I finally finished The Jungle. I didn't even LIKE this book! This one I will admit I put down more often than I read. SO depressing, & the graphic gore descriptions of the cattle yards & the beef rendering plant processes I could EASILY have done without. I believe, & this is just MY opinion, that the story still would have gotten it's point across WITHOUT those stomach turning descriptives....

message 6825: by Karina (new)

Karina | 401 comments Just finished Treasure Island. It was okay but it was a quick read thankfully.

message 6826: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Recently finished a good number of books from the list: Sense and Sensibility - which was decent, not quite as good as P&P, but I didn't dislike it like I disliked other books of hers; The Book of Laughter and Forgetting - which I grew tired of really fast; Measuring the World - which was cute and amusing, but nothing too special; and A Suitable Boy - which was... long.

message 6827: by Maryellen (last edited Nov 04, 2012 07:32AM) (new)

Maryellen | 29 comments Vile Bodies, Evelyn Waugh - Enjoyed very much.

message 6828: by Aileen (last edited Nov 04, 2012 08:59AM) (new)

Aileen | 154 comments Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck. Short read which I found quite unsettling.

message 6829: by Amie (new)

Amie (amie-b) | 25 comments The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Good book. I know that the other books from the series aren't on the list, but I plan to read them....I have to know THE ULTIMATE QUESTION! lol

message 6830: by Kristel (last edited Nov 04, 2012 12:22PM) (new)

Kristel (kristelh) Just finished Amateurs by Donald Barthelme and The Judge and His Hangman by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Both very quick reads

message 6831: by Casey (new)

Casey (casey_readingsomebooks) | 26 comments Middlemarch

I wasn't in love with it, but I liked Dorothea a lot

message 6832: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Finished Shikasta by Lessing, which was ok until it started getting preachy. Lessing on a high horse.

message 6833: by Craig (new)

Craig | 241 comments Confusions of Young Torless -Musil
and
Where Angels Fear to Tread -Forster

Both were good, but between these two, Musil's work stood out.

message 6834: by Margie (new)

Margie I just finished Pride & Prejudice (for the 2nd time) - I must say it enjoyed it a lot more this time around. It's my first 'official' book on the list. I have read a couple of others over the years but was rather surprised to see them appear on a list like this so I thought I better give them another shot and see what I missed the first time around.

message 6835: by Ginny (new)

Ginny | 165 comments Just finished 1Q84 and Wild Swans. Both were thought provoking.

Trollope is very good. I look forward to this.

message 6838: by Diane (new)

Diane (readingrl) | 58 comments I just finished "The Killer Inside Me". I really enjoy crime novels, so this novel was right up my alley.

message 6839: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald. It's unlikely I would have found this without the list.

my review

message 6840: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (catjackson) Just finished Lolita by Nabokov. I found it a very disturbing book, yet I couldn't NOT finish it. I wanted to find out what would happen next. And I found Nabokov to be such a wonderful writer; I wondered how such wonderful words and phrasing could be applied to such a difficult topic.

message 6841: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments The Charwoman's Daughter by Stephens, short and with a happy ending.

message 6842: by Friederike (new)

Friederike (quitetooutterlyecstatic) | 3 comments I read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (of course) a few days ago (for university). I found it a lot more accessible than I remember it from last time (a few years ago), and actually, it's quite funny.

I also finished Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie a few days ago (only took me three weeks...) and ugh I sort of want to run around and wave it at people and tell them to read it right now because it's so fantastic.

message 6843: by Denise (new)

Denise White Teeth. My first Zadie book. I will be reading some of her others.

message 6844: by Nadia (new)

Nadia Freitas (nadinha) I recently finished The Count of Monte Cristo and it was delicious reading.

The Drawing of the Three I finished today and the Tower is closer

message 6845: by Cristina (new)

Cristina | 26 comments Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Had a more interesting ending than I expected.

message 6846: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments The Monk. Much better than I had anticipated.

message 6847: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments At the Mountains of Madness. Had expected more from it.

message 6848: by Denise (new)

Denise Mikela wrote: "The Monk. Much better than I had anticipated."

I really thought it was pretty amazing. How about the fact the author was a teenager(in today's terms)?

message 6849: by Ginny (new)

Ginny | 165 comments Mikela wrote: "The Monk. Much better than I had anticipated."

I just finished this one too. I enjoyed it;just read Denise's comment about the author being a teenager. Wow! Impressive!

message 6850: by Laura (new)

Laura | 149 comments Last night I finished The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck- I'd heard great things about the book so had high expectations, although I thought the ending was intense and amazing I didn't find much else of the book that compelling, the next Steinbeck I'll read is Of Mice and Men
