One of my favourite novels of all time, but not everyone's. What did you think of it Cynthia?

This is a favorite of mine too - I was completely enthralled by it.

Different than what may be termed a typical prose novel. Very informed by poetry, ranging from moments of sublimity to odd vulgarity. I will have to come back to this again and carve out some more.

message 6307: by Ian (new)

Ian | 143 comments Have completed "Money" by Martin Amis. Brave, clever, funny and at times appalling. Recommended.

Tomchicago | 21 comments just finished the grand "What's Bred in the Bone" by Robertson Davies.

message 6310: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mmbirch3) | 38 comments just finished Thackeray's Vanity Fair. It wasn't my favorite and it could have been a great deal shorter but his characters were brilliant.

In Search of Lost Time is the 7 volumes in paperback. I see it used at Alibris for around $60.00 (several sets). I didn't look, but I would expect them to also have copies of the individual volumes.

Do a search for the particular book you want and if available they will say Download Ebook or Go to explore, choose e-books, then search for the book or author you want. If in the public domain they are free downloads. They don't have everything but they have some excellent classics.

Steven | 78 comments I finished the two books by Marquis de Sade. Wouldn't recommend 120 Days of Sodom to anybody. Justine was not quite so graphic and did have a good plot.

Beth (eparks4232) | 162 comments Oh, dear. I think I haven't updated in forever. Quick list from memory of what I probably haven't posted:
The Golden Notebook: Perennial Classics edition, The Old Man and the Sea, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Wide Sargasso Sea, The Path to the Spiders' Nests, and Fugitive Pieces. Reviews are on my blog: http://bethslistlove.wordpress.com

There is an edition of Pilgrimage of Dorothy Richardson at Alibris, new, and located in the UK. But it's spendy.

Pilgrimage at The Saint Bookstore, Merseyside, UK

There are cheaper ones in the US, but I suspect shipping would make it about the same cost.

message 6329: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I am not at all familiar with UK locations, but WorldCat tells me there are a number of UK libraries holding this title.

Grrrr. I didn't check for a Kindle version (I *always* do - why not this time?). In any case, I decided to splurge and get one of those paper versions from Alibris. Wonder how long it will collect dust before I get to it?

Except this isn't the book by D. Richardson, it's an analysis of her work.

Better World Books has some volumes for $13-18 and free worldwide shipping, but if the original was 13 volumes, I can't tell how complete the 5-6 different volumes listed are.

Phooey! I thought that was one of the volumes that Deanne was looking for.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Pilgrimage: Volume 1

If this is the correct volume, the same bookstore in Merseyside has a copy. Also a copy in Yorkshire, and other locations, see:

Ginny - I got it all from the library. My library system had volumes 1-3 of the translation I read (I read the Penguin edition) and I got volumes 4-6 through interlibrary loan. Honestly, you can get anything if you do interlibrary loan. :)

Ginny | 165 comments Bucket wrote: "Officially finished the Proust this morning - HOORAY!!!!"

Yay! What a feeling of accomplishment this is I bet. I think I have decided to go through the library for this as well. Trying to get some of the smaller books from the list that I have laying around my house finished, but have started Swann's Way. Now if I can only find my copy of the 1001 list; I keep it in a Wonder Woman folder! Hopefully it will be easy to find; I took it to the library Saturday....

message 6339: by Bucket (last edited Jun 25, 2012 04:58PM) (new)

Bucket | 248 comments Good luck Ginny - it's quite an undertaking, but well worth it in my opinion! I highly recommend Proust's Way: A Field Guide to in Search of Lost Time by Roger Shattuck - it's an extremely useful guide. I also recommend the Penguin edition if you can get your hands on them (this is the one with 7 different translators, general editor is Christopher Prendergast). The first 6 parts (in 5 volumes) are excellent. The final part is just okay as far as translation quality, but debatably still better than the older Moncrieff-style translation that (many argue) explains more than translates.

Rachel (Sfogs) | 226 comments I've just finished Wise Children by Angela Carter.
I found this book strange.
A slow read for me even though I did enjoy it, it only really picked up nearer the end. But OMG WHAT AN ENDING~!!!!

Deanne | 681 comments Finished The Birds Fall Down by West, set before the russian revolution, the main character the grandaughter of an exiled russian count finds herself embroiled in a plot.
Also finished As If I Am Not There by Drakulic, a difficult book to read because of it's subject matter and the knowledge that these things did occur.
