I just finished A Clockwork Orange. For the first 40 or so pages I hated it, wanted to throw it against the wall, burn it, stomp on it and forget I had ever opened this book up but then something happened. I forced myself to read just 10 more pages, to give it a chance to show me why this was supposed to be such an important work and it began to do just that.
Just finished The Gathering - I've read some bad reviews, but I really enjoyed this one. It was definitely dark and brooding, but her beautiful prose begged to be read out loud, and really made me think about what it might be like to grow up in a large family, which intrigued me, being an only child.
Just last night I finished Sexing the Cherry. That was both interesting & imaginative. It read almost like a fairy tale or a fable. I'd recommend it. I gave it 3 stars & a review.
Calyre wrote: "I just finished They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"How did you like it? I hope to get to it soon.
I've finished The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. While reading this book it is highly advisable to throw the logical part of your brain out the window FIRST.
This was my first Haruki Murakami book, and WOW I'm going to be looking out for more of his books very soon.
Everything in this story will makes sense when not making sense.
Things will fit where they don't belong.
There are multiple plots on top of multiple plots and in the end they apear to connect together...but you can't be sure.
You don't read this book and much as you journey through the story
5 stars from me.
Just finished Tom Jones by Henry Fielding. I enjoyed it but it dragged on for far too long which is probably why it took me a long time to read it.
I just finished The Robber Bride-Margaret Atwood, last night. While I really enjoyed this book, it's about PEOPLE, not a dystopian society, it travels though the "fringes" of society, & explores a bit about the surface of what you see, & what's underneath it through the lives of 3 women, & the woman they all hate to the marrow of their bones, who brought them together as friends. Ultimately, it's also about compassion & forgiveness too. I reviewed & gave it 3 stars.
Under Fire - Henri BarbusseWWI story told most realistically and sympathetically, but quite graphic.
Vanity Fair -ThackerayWow! This one took a little longer to finish, but the journey was funny, pathetic, ridiculous, and very well written.

Have it sitting on my nightstand> Glad to hear you found it enjoyable.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Definitely worthwhile.
I just finished 'On Beauty' by Zadie Smith. It took me awhile to get into, but I warmed up to it about 3/4 of the way through. I haven't read Howards End, on which I hear its plot is loosely based, so it might have grabbed me a bit more if I had.
Shirley by Charlotte Bronte. Though somewhat lacking in structural unit, I did get hooked on the story, and it was very interesting to read that Charlotte, while writing the novel, lost both Emily and Anne, and moulded the two heroines after them as homage.
I just finished The Green Hat. Though the writing style was sometimes difficult to wade through, there was a sordid tale within. By the time I got to the end, I realized there was a reason for some of the obtuseness. Recommended.
Denise wrote: "Fingersmith by Sarah Waters was a wonderful read. Had difficulty putting it down."That was an interesting book. Every time I thought I had it figured out, the author threw in another twist which took it into an entirely different direction. It really was well done.
I've just finished The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.A short story. I liked the story but it made me sad.
Just finished with "Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters. Great book with plot twists revolving around a mystery/ long con. Descriptions of daily Victorian life were so accurate and well written.
I finished Swann's Way (Book 1 of In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust) last night. I really enjoyed it!Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Just finished Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. It was an imaginative, fast, easy read that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The Old Man and the Sea. Was a wonderful book about man against the sea and working hard even when you should be able to take it easy.
I just finished The Driver's Seat, by Muriel Spark. FASCINATING book, almost a horror story that's been turned inside out. I think it took me less than 2 hours to finish, LOL
Jennifer wrote: "I just finished The Color Purple by Alice Walker. I could hardly put it down."I LOVE her books! I have about 100 pages left till I finish up The Temple of My Familiar, which is the thid in that general "series" of stories. If you loved that one, read Possessing the Secret of Joy next, it's the second installment :)
I finished A Town Like Alice late last week. I read it years ago but didn't remember the bulk of the story. It was so lovely and touching! Shute is a great storyteller. The stories about the small outback towns are still true today ... I just couldn't live there. I finished reading The Poisonwood Bible and oh - it isn't on the 2010 list! Oh well. I enjoyed the story but the 5yr old narrator rang false to me and the narrators as adults didn't work for me. I think the author was having trouble with the ending of the novel. Anyway, I loved the stories about the Congo. My MIL and husband lived in Africa for a little and the missionaries recommended my MIL buy cake mix. Also - the snakes would come out at night and lie on the road because they were warm.
Just completed The Hound of the Baskervilles and was delighted to re-discover just how good these Sherlock Holmes books were.
I just finished Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. I'm certainly happy I read it, and found it a very engrossing read, but I preferred Maugham's The Razor's Edge. In the end, both works follow similar themes, and Maugham's style never ceases to entertain and infuriate me. He certainly knew how to write selfish characters!

Where's the LIKE button? Congrats! Not many can claim that accomplishment! LOL. How long did it actually take you?
I just finished Portrait in Sepia by Isabel Allende, gave it 5 stars & a review. Just in case no one else has read it yet, it's actually a pre-quel to both Daughter of Fortune & The House of the Spirits. I'm going to search the list & see what other books of hers are on the list I haven't read yet :)

Thanks Lisa! It was quite surreal knowing that I had actually read it - and thoroughly enjoyed it to boot!! I started on October 7th with the aim to finish by Christmas Day but luckily for me it was such a good read I came in early. I've decided thats how I am going to tackle the big ones - do one each winter in the lead up to Xmas as its the perfect time of year to curl up. May do Les Mis next year if anone cares to join me!
Vathek by William BeckfordKnowing little about ancient Persia's mythology, I enjoyed the notes of this gothic tale better than the story. Beckford was quite a scholar!

I agree, congratulations! W & P is definitely a worthwhile read! Most people are put off by the sheer length, but I think the most difficult part is getting around all those Russian names. I managed to read it a number of years ago during a 2-week vacation in Hawaii.
