Just finished Never Let Me Go - surprisingly I hadn't heard anything about this book before I started it, so I didn't know what a brilliant book I was getting into! Wow.
Joy wrote: "I just finished The Poisonwood Bible. Not bad!"That was one I loved & gave a 5 star review to :) GREAT book!
I finished Gone With the Wind, and I liked it a lot more than I was expecting. One of my favorite "classsic" novels now. :)
I've just finished The World According to Garp by John Irving. This book was really good!
The character's were so full of life they could have
walked straight out of the pages!
The story looks at many different issues that many people
face at least once in their lives.
Also looks at different people's points of view, and how society then judges them for being so different.
I'll love to read more by this authora.
Mrs. Dalloway (liked a lot), Passage to India (liked a lot), Death of Ivan Ilyich (nope, not as profound as I'd been led to believe).
Oh, and Disgrace (I've finished all these in past 2 days. Been sick in bed and reading...). Liked it a lot, though certainly not a happy book.
Came back from the library with a haul of "quick reads":Animal Farm
The Pit & The Pendulum
(just finished BOTH of them)
The Portrait of the Artist As A Young Man-Joyce
1984-Orwell
House of 7 Gables-Hawthorne
Lord of the Flies-Golding
Catch-22- Heller
Northanger Abbey-Austen
Brave New World-Huxley
In Cold Blood-Capote
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency-Adams
Prime of Miss Jean Brodie/Girls of Slender Means/Driver's Seat, etc- Spark. I find it really strange that this one thin book has FOUR titles!
I'm still working my way through Alias, Grace, Book of Illusions & Of Love & Shadows. I like that I have the quickie reads that I can breeze through between the "heavier" novels.

Loved Cider House Rules by him.
H.G Wells The Time Machine. Started thinking it wouldn't be that good, but it turned out to be great!
[Book: Possession: A Romance] by A.S.Byatt - I admit I was quite disappointed by this one. It was intellectually challenging experience indeed, but I disliked all the characters in the novel. I didn't care for even one of them, because they all were so distant and simply unlikable.
The Nose by Gogol. Short and symbolic, very open to interpretation.and
Old Goriot (or Pere Goriot) by Honore de Balzac.
This one will be making it back to my reading pile again. Very, very good.

I haven't read those. I read Handmaid's Tale, Alias Grace, and The Blind Assassin. Liked AG the best, then the BA.
The Blind Assassin is probably my favorite of hers. You should definitely check out Oryx and Crake too.
BG and AG are sort of neck and neck, really. I read them a while ago so I just remember liking them, but that TBA seemed to take a while to get going. I've heard of O&C. Not sure why I haven't read it. Is it up there with TBA and AG?
Yeah, I just looked it up and noticed that. Sci-fi/dystopian fiction isn't my favorite. But because it's Atwood I might give it a try.
Last night I finished All Quiet on the Western Front - excellent, though such a difficult subject matter. Ever so glad to have been able to read it, given that it was among those burned in Germany under Hitler.
Just finished Animal Farm and The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia. Both were absolutely worth reading and very interesting - both were also primarily "idea" books and lacked (IMO) emotional depth. So while I am glad I read them, I don't think I'll be rereading either.
I just finished "The Magus" by John Fowles. Had read it in 1969 and gave it 4 stars then. Perhaps, after all these years, I have grown tired of people struggling to find meaning in life when all they have to do is to be honest and nice to each other. I found Nicolas despicable, Conchis unforgivable, Lily amoral, and Allison stupid! Would enjoy discussing this book with those with different viewpoints.
I just finished The Last Chronicle of Barset by Anthony Trollope. It's the last in the 6 book Barchester Towers series. Only the first (The Warden) and this last one made the list. To really get the series you need to read all of them. The last one was great - totally charming Victorian lit.

Thank you for your comment about reading them all, which I had intended to do. It helps me know I'll appreciate taking the journey through all six.
I'm reading "Waiting for the Barbarians" and it's intensely interesting. I haven't been a fan of Coetzee in the past, so I'm excited to find one I can really love!
I just turned the last page of Alias Grace, & reviewed it here. I was pleasantly surprised at how INTERESTING it was! So far I think it's my favorite Atwood book.

I am halfway through Lord of the Flies. It's really interesting, I have no idea why I haven't read it before. Going to go see if I can finish it up :)

Just finished reading The Diary of a Nobody - such a fun read, full of gentle humour. I had to laugh at parts and sighed but giggled at others. The protagonist reminded me of my grandpa almost ...

Agreed! Lord of the Flies is a great book! I m halfway through it too.

Becky wrote: "Just finished "Saturday" by Ian McEwan. Not impressed, to be honest, but a super quick read."I just finished it too! Here is my review:

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Now really want to get Alias Grace, since everyone seems to love it. I raced through Handmaid's tale, both drawn to it and disturbed by it, which was, I guess, the point.
I finished BOTH The Book of Illusions & Lord of the Flies last night :) Pretty proud of myself, LOL. My reviews are up for both too. Started the Sparks multi-titled book, LOL, too. My copy is under the title of The Girls of Slender Means. It's CUTE so far! The girl greasing her body with butter to get out the bathroom window on to the roof naked is a hoot. I'll finish that one today, no sweat.Started Dirk gently's Holistic Detective Agency(not "getting into" it yet, hope it gets better, & am enjoying Of Love & Shadows too.
