message 1: by Katlyn (new) - added it

Katlyn Does anyone else feel that this books is ridiculously similar to the film Elephant by Gus Van Sant? Does anyone know if this is a coincidence?

message 2: by Katherine (new) - added it

Katherine I know exactly what you mean. I never really thought about the book being that similar to Elephant, but now that you say that, you're right. I personaly think that its just coincidence.

message 3: by Amanda (new) - added it

Amanda The author did a lot of research, and it's probably possible that the movie inspired her. The story was similar to a lot of shootings and movies based on shootings, not just Elephant.

Jen H They are both about school shootings, but I don't see a ton of parallels beyond that.

Amanda I think Katlyn is referring mainly to the homosexuality in both the book in and Elephant. The couple in the book, Josie and Matt, also remind me of the couple at the end of the movie Elephant. That's about it.

message 6: by Becky (new)

Becky Sanchez Also, if you read "The Pact", there are a lot of similarities there too, especially with the teenagers in prison and the thoughts/feelings of their mothers. Also, the attorneys in both stories behave in very similar ways.

message 7: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy the attorneys are the same people, she brought him back for nineteen minutes.

Alyssa I just added Elephant to my netflicks Queue! Now I'm curious.

Kris Just added it to my queue, too. Glad I saw this. Curiosity piqued.

Although I enjoyed the book, I read straight after The Pact. Way to many similarites, there were even whole sentences repeated in both. If I never read the discription of someone running their fingernail along a chair, pants leg etc etc it will be too soon. Don't think I'll ready anything of her for some time.

I felt it was a bad copy of We Need to Talk About Kevin

The only part of it I found interesting were the court room scenes.

Yeah, it could have been so much better. The plot was great, and topical. the process, and effects of bulling, she captured this well, but the message got lost, in a bad structure.

Diana Townsend Similar but so much better... when Elephant was over I was left thinking, wait... there has to be more! With this book, I didn't have to feel like that.

Well I haven't exactly read We need to Talk about Kevin but the plot seem eerily similar.
