Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments I have to agree with Monica, since joining GR my TBR list has grown enormously but I've also been introduced to some absolutely wonderful new stories. As I read every day I get through a lot of books quickly so having suggestions is great.

Sharnie | 10 comments Hello, I'm Sharnie from Toowoomba. I'm an avid reader of fantasy and autobiographies (though to be honest i'll read just about anything. I am also very passionate about children's literature especially now that my five year old sister has developed a taste for reading (as in, I've yet to meet another five year old who asks to be read Harry Potter, and rushes to the chapter books in a bookstore). apart from reading I am also a student at university studying languages and linguistics, and I work part-time as a waitress. My favourite books are the His Dark Materials series by Philip pullman, Lives of the Monster Dogs by Kirsten Bakis and Watership Down by Richard Adams (though I do have a real soft spot for Barry and Pearson's Peter Pan books ). Anyhow not much more to say, but i'm very happy to meet you all, and I hope that we can become good friends

Hi Sharnie,

This is the time of year I yearn to be somewhere like Toowoomba - Melbourne is so cold.
Yours sounds like a book household. Your daughter is almost at the age I was (6) when I read Charles Dickens' Great Expectations - she might be interested. :) BTW, if you haven't discovered it already, The Book Chook blog is a great resource for discovering more books for kids. http://www.thebookchook.com/

Good luck with your studies. JB:-)

MarciaB - Book Muster Down Under | 225 comments Hi there everyone,

I'm Marcia and I also live in Toowoomba! Married, with 2 kids. So glad to be here - don't get much time to look at absolutely everything ... but hopefully I'll get there. I'm into a lot of HEA books - just love happy endings - and Suspense - although I'm not averse to reading other types. Any recommendations gladly accepted.

A very big welcome to Sharnie and Marcia! Fancy you both coming from Toowoomba!! Small world!

Sharnie, your little sister is amazing...reading that sort of book at her age! What a great future she will have. Good luck with your very interesting studies as well:)

Marcia, you'll find lots of recommendations here, we even have a thread you'll love... http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

Welcome, Sharnie!
I'm a (computational) linguist, donc, paraît-il, on s'intéresse un peu aux mêmes choses. What sort of linguistics are you studying?

Pleased to "meet you". Toowoomba Rules! (lol)

message 3114: by Sharnie (new)

Sharnie | 10 comments Hi again everyone, sorry for my absence.
@ JB I've lived in Canberra until last year, so I'm really loving the weather here. (-6 in Canberra today, yuck). Our whole family is pretty bookish, it's a good environment to be in. I'm not sure how she'd cope with Great Expectations, I read it in middle school and I loved it very much (would have perhaps loved it more if it wasn't a class assigned text), but I'll definitely give it a try when Harry Potter gets too scary (it should be soon, I was absolutely terrified by a lot of the things in Harry Potter, and I was a lot older than she is). And that website is fantastic.
@Mark
I'm in my first year at university now, so I'm currently just studying the foundations of linguistics. It's the most fascinating subject I've ever studied

(On a separate note, has anyone had the opportunity to read the picture book Flood by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. The illustrations are the most stunning I've seen in a long time, it just looks so wet.)

Thanks for the tip re Flood, Sharnie, and thanks Brenda, for the link. I think this book might be one my students would enjoy.

I'm never cheeky.
I just honestly thought Canberra was inhabited entirely by zombies.
I'm sure they're very pretty zombies...

Alison Cubitt (httpgoodreadscomlambertnagle) | 26 comments Hi Friends,

I am Alison, and a member of the thriller writing partnership, pen-name Lambert Nagle. We are Kiwi/Brit citizens with Australian permanent residency and are serial relocators. I moved to Sydney straight after university and we have been criss-crossing the globe ever since. We both just relocated from Melbourne to the South of England just over a year ago. I miss coffee and cake from Brunetti!

Your debut novel Revolution Earth by Lambert Nagle sounds great! I have added it to my TBR!!

Kind regards,

Alison Cubitt (httpgoodreadscomlambertnagle) | 26 comments Hi Michael in South Australia,

We never got to do that drive from Melbourne to Adelaide as we'd planned (did Sydney-Melbourne twice instead)-once during a locust swarm.... plenty of material for anyone out there who writes sci-fi1

Am so glad to have found this inclusive and welcoming group of Aussie readers.

Alison

Hi Bec, Sharnie, Marcia and Sharon, and anyone I might have missed.

Ahh come on! The Canberra jokes just aren't funny, not sure they ever were. Although I must admit I've never agreed with my Mother's sentiment: Canberra: A Personal Perspective, I don't love Canberra, but I certainly think that it's a town that has a higher than average percentage of interesting people. Zombies my butt! Grrr, Tony, grr, shame on you for continuing with the stereotyping. (I forgive you though, as I'm sure you can't help it, probably born in Surfer's or something ;D)

Best to you all,
Alison

MarciaB - Book Muster Down Under | 225 comments Welcome to all the newbies - hopefully I'll find some great friends here - by the way, while we're on the subject of "immigrants", guess I should tell you that I'm originally from South Africa, permanent resident of Australia!

message 3145: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Welcome to Catherine and Alison, I'm sure you'll enjoy it here :)

Alison my husband has been meaning to buy a barbecue since we first met but we need some decking to make an outdoor entertainment area and Robbie has so many other projects on all the time I'm beginning to think we might just be celebrating our silver anniversary before we get the barbie lol

message 3146: by Tony (new)

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 46 comments You know what? I'd rather be from Canberra than from the UK.
Really!
For starters, it would have taken a lot less paperwork to get married :0)
Yeah, I'm not a massive fan of my old home country. England is rather rubbish, if I may say so.
I do miss the castles though...

message 3147: by [deleted user] (new)

I was born in England. We immigrated to Australia when I was four. I remember the Australian landscape being totally alien, the gum trees in particular. My first few years in my new home were spent trying to be as Australian as possible, and attempting to ditch my pommie accent. :)

Tasmania is as English as you can get in terms of landscape. There's even a Melton Mowbray down here! But no castles unfortunately....

message 3148: by Tony (new)

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 46 comments Hm. Current objective: build a castle in Australia... possibly somewhere south of Perth. Ideally not too far from a quarry...
:0)

Let me know when your castle is finished Tony...I'd love to visit! Just make sure it's an old, authentic one...1700's would do!! ;P
