Hi Sharnie,
This is the time of year I yearn to be somewhere like Toowoomba - Melbourne is so cold.
Yours sounds like a book household. Your daughter is almost at the age I was (6) when I read Charles Dickens' Great Expectations - she might be interested. :) BTW, if you haven't discovered it already, The Book Chook blog is a great resource for discovering more books for kids. http://www.thebookchook.com/
Good luck with your studies. JB:-)

Welcome to the group Sharnie :)

I'm Marcia and I also live in Toowoomba! Married, with 2 kids. So glad to be here - don't get much time to look at absolutely everything ... but hopefully I'll get there. I'm into a lot of HEA books - just love happy endings - and Suspense - although I'm not averse to reading other types. Any recommendations gladly accepted.
A very big welcome to Sharnie and Marcia! Fancy you both coming from Toowoomba!! Small world!
Sharnie, your little sister is amazing...reading that sort of book at her age! What a great future she will have. Good luck with your very interesting studies as well:)
Marcia, you'll find lots of recommendations here, we even have a thread you'll love... http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/5...

Hi Sharnie and Marcia (and whoever else I may have missed :)).

Thanks so much for the very warm welcome. Thanks too for the recommendations link Brenda - definitely going to have a look at it now. Michael, thanks for that link on Before I Go To Sleep - gonna check it out too ;-)

Welcome, Sharnie!
I'm a (computational) linguist, donc, paraît-il, on s'intéresse un peu aux mêmes choses. What sort of linguistics are you studying?

@ JB I've lived in Canberra until last year, so I'm really loving the weather here. (-6 in Canberra today, yuck). Our whole family is pretty bookish, it's a good environment to be in. I'm not sure how she'd cope with Great Expectations, I read it in middle school and I loved it very much (would have perhaps loved it more if it wasn't a class assigned text), but I'll definitely give it a try when Harry Potter gets too scary (it should be soon, I was absolutely terrified by a lot of the things in Harry Potter, and I was a lot older than she is). And that website is fantastic.
@Mark
I'm in my first year at university now, so I'm currently just studying the foundations of linguistics. It's the most fascinating subject I've ever studied
(On a separate note, has anyone had the opportunity to read the picture book Flood by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley. The illustrations are the most stunning I've seen in a long time, it just looks so wet.)

I love the look of that book Sharnie, thanks...I'm going to try to hunt it down!

Thanks for the tip re Flood, Sharnie, and thanks Brenda, for the link. I think this book might be one my students would enjoy.

I'm never cheeky.
I just honestly thought Canberra was inhabited entirely by zombies.
I'm sure they're very pretty zombies...

Welcome Carol...lovely to have you with us:) Definitely keep dreaming as Emily says, and in the meantime, check out all the threads, and before you know it, your TBR list will be HUGE!!! :)

A very big welcome Catherine, lovely to have you with us:) Feel free to browse, ask questions as you wish....enjoy!

I am Alison, and a member of the thriller writing partnership, pen-name Lambert Nagle. We are Kiwi/Brit citizens with Australian permanent residency and are serial relocators. I moved to Sydney straight after university and we have been criss-crossing the globe ever since. We both just relocated from Melbourne to the South of England just over a year ago. I miss coffee and cake from Brunetti!
Hi Alison, a very big welcome to you! Looks like you'd best come back soon, for your coffee and cake;P
Your debut novel Revolution Earth by Lambert Nagle sounds great! I have added it to my TBR!!

Hi Brenda, great to meet you and thrilled that you've added our book to your TBR!
Kind regards,
Alison

We never got to do that drive from Melbourne to Adelaide as we'd planned (did Sydney-Melbourne twice instead)-once during a locust swarm.... plenty of material for anyone out there who writes sci-fi1
Am so glad to have found this inclusive and welcoming group of Aussie readers.

Hi Bec, Sharnie, Marcia and Sharon, and anyone I might have missed.
Ahh come on! The Canberra jokes just aren't funny, not sure they ever were. Although I must admit I've never agreed with my Mother's sentiment: Canberra: A Personal Perspective, I don't love Canberra, but I certainly think that it's a town that has a higher than average percentage of interesting people. Zombies my butt! Grrr, Tony, grr, shame on you for continuing with the stereotyping. (I forgive you though, as I'm sure you can't help it, probably born in Surfer's or something ;D)

And hi to Catherine and Alison too...

Gina, Tony's from the UK...that's worse isn't it;P lol (joking Tony!!)

I see! Then I shall be magnanimous, and sympathetic at the same time. ;D;D

Best to you all,
Alison

Alison my husband has been meaning to buy a barbecue since we first met but we need some decking to make an outdoor entertainment area and Robbie has so many other projects on all the time I'm beginning to think we might just be celebrating our silver anniversary before we get the barbie lol

Really!
For starters, it would have taken a lot less paperwork to get married :0)
Yeah, I'm not a massive fan of my old home country. England is rather rubbish, if I may say so.
I do miss the castles though...
I was born in England. We immigrated to Australia when I was four. I remember the Australian landscape being totally alien, the gum trees in particular. My first few years in my new home were spent trying to be as Australian as possible, and attempting to ditch my pommie accent. :)
Tasmania is as English as you can get in terms of landscape. There's even a Melton Mowbray down here! But no castles unfortunately....

Let me know when your castle is finished Tony...I'd love to visit! Just make sure it's an old, authentic one...1700's would do!! ;P
