Mark Welcome, Isabel! Ahhh... I see you assume that we are real people, rather than nanobots, computer viruses, or chipmunks with preternaturally good typing skills! None of this can be proven, and we deny everything.

I think you're exactly right, though. Asking people is definitely the best way to go, rather than, say, throwing a dart at the bargain table (or at a salesperson). You're extremely welcome, here. We're an extremely friendly group of people, most (of the others) not noticeably insane, and people are always happy to make recommendations for you, though the goodreads software will also do that, once you've rated enough books. You should tell us what you're in interested in (genres, authors and so forth). Hit many threads, and have a good time.

Hi Isabel. I find so many great books on GR. I follow people whose tastes I like, and regularly check my friends' reviews or what they are currently reading. A warning though, Goodreads can be quite addictive! :)

I have a kindle too. That's even more tempting! One click and the book is yours. :):)

Michele Hi everyone, I just found this group and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Michele, I am originally from Melbourne but am now living in Vietnam. We have been away from Australia for around 10 years now, but are fortunate to be able to visit on a regular basis. Like most of you, I love to read and cannot imagine being without a book or two on the go!

Welcome Michele...so glad you found us:) Enjoy browsing the threads, and I'm sure you'll find lots more to read by doing so;)

Will you come back to live in Australia some day?

message 3061: by Michele (new)

Michele Thanks Brenda, yes we will come back to Australia eventually - no immediate plans though.

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 46 comments Hi Michele!
Do you find it easy enough to find English language books over there? Or do you read in Vietnamese? Ha - stupid question, I guess after 10 years you'll be able to! But are thee many English language books available, like in second hand bookshops? I've never been to Vietnam, so have no idea what it's like there!
Tony

message 3066: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Michele. :) Gina

message 3067: by Michele (new)

Michele Thanks everyone :) Tony, It is quite difficult to find English books here, we have a couple of used book stores in a nearby town, but I tend to either shop when I come home or buy for my kindle. I have also been re-reading some of the books I bought over with me. Sadly I don't speak Vietnamese, we have only been here for 18 months, we lived in Guam and Sth Korea prior to moving here and I discovered in Korea that learning a new language is not one of my talents :)

If you don't know of them already Michele, Book Depository will help you out...free delivery and amazingly cheap prices:)

Michele Thanks Brenda, I have heard of them but haven't tried them yet - mail delivery here is a bit dodgy at the best of times and then there is the censorship issue to deal with. If customs are not aware of the book you have to pay for someone to sit down and read it to make sure they approve of it entering the country.

Michele Michael, definitely not as bad as China but Facebook is often blocked, especially when the Party has a big meeting. I found out the other day that the novel 1984 is banned here. Luckily they didn't search my shipment on arrival :) Also, no books on Vietnam and in particular the war are allowed.

Wow! I had absolutely no idea....are there any safety issues for you and the family Michele?

message 3075: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello! I'm from Victoria. Anyhow, I;m really attracted to paranormal romance kind of books. I love TEA! Without tea, my life is like a missing puzzle. Um. I'm a typical Asian. Oh, I am 14 years of age. And call me Chu Chu (I know weird name)

Brenda | 80157 comments Mod
Welcome Chu Chu (we'll probably call you Lee after awhile, as that's what your message says!)! Enjoy the group...and your tea (I'm a tea drinker too!)

message 3077: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Chu Chu. :)

message 3078: by Michele (new)

Michele Brenda, the only real safety issue here is the driving - definitely something you have to see to believe - otherwise it is a very safe country.

I'm glad everything else is safe Michele...I've been to Bali, it surely couldn't be as bad as that!!!

Mish | 3601 comments Welcome to all the new members! It's great to see you all here :)

message 3083: by Michele (new)

Michele Brenda, I was in Bali many years ago and I don't remember being as freaked out by the traffic as what I am here! Most road rules are ignored, driving on the wrong side of the road is normal, when crossing the road you have to look in both directions before stepping out, that is if you have managed not to get run over on the footpath! LOL...I could go on :)

message 3084: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80157 comments Mod
Ha! Michele that sounds scary!! Not a place to be blase while out walking, for sure!!!

message 3085: by Tony (new)

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 46 comments Wow, that traffic sounds awful! The worst I saw was in Jordan, where they have a three-lane ring road through the centre of town - with six plus lanes of traffic fighting their way along it! I quite often saw cars going sideways across the streams to try and get into one that was moving faster. Or at all! I couldn't imagine ever driving there, bt in a cafe I met a Melbourne couple who were - apparently (said the wife) 'he loved the challenge!'
Craziness. I haven't even dared drive in Australia yet...
Tony

Living in Vietnam must be wonderful Michelle, my sister is headed there this Xmas for a holiday and the pic's she's shown me of the places they intend to visit look absolutely glorious.

And Chu Chu - I have to ask, cause I'm nosy like that, where did you get that name?

Thanks Tracey, it is fun living here, but can be challenging at times. Is your sister going on a tour or are they travelling by themselves?

message 3088: by Bec (new)

Bec | 12 comments Hi Everyone
I've just joined the group so I thought I'd introduce myself...I'm from Perth, mum to 2 kids & a 4 legged variety called Lucy.
I love to read anything really. I've just ordered a kindle as I'm completely out of space on my bookshelf & have a list of books ready to download when I get it. If you've read something recently & loved it please reccomend it to me! I'm currently reading Gypsey by Lesley Pearse after reading the 50 shades trilogy which I enjoyed. I look forwards to chatting with you all :)

They're doing a tour, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - I think they're gone for just under a month. Can't wait to see all their pics when they get back.

Also a warm welcome to Bec - good to have you here at Aussie Readers.

Cheers,
Trace

Hi Bec, and welcome. I'm envious of you with your new Kindle. I am still using the free PC app but am 'saving up' to one day buy a Kindle. Shame Amazon doesn't do laybys! JB:)

Tony Slater (tonyjamesslater) | 46 comments Hi Bec! Welcome!
What genres of books are you looking for on your shiny new Kindle?
(Best decision you could have made by the way - I love mine, or would love it, if the wife ever allowed me near it)
:0)

But Dick Smith and Big W do JB, and Dick Smith is where I got my Kindle..it's the exact same one, and there's no problem with repairs etc should you need them...

I ended up getting a refurbished kindle from eBay so I hope it's ok. It still comes with the full warranty.
I checked out the recommendation list & have added heaps more books to my to read list! Haha! I'm going to have to give up my day job so I can read more :)

Monica Lamperd | 51 comments Welcome Michelle, Chu Chu and Bec! Hope I haven't missed anyone out there.. :)

I second Brenda's message... my TBR list grew from about 3 books before I joined GR to over 200! Eeek! (I do love having such a large list though.. it means that every time I go to the library I find something from my TBR to borrow!)
