Aussie Readers discussion

Introduce yourselves!

I'm a keen reader of travel books, especially the comedy variety, and am trying to be a travel writer as well. Sigh! Aren't we all?
I'm 33, a pommie bloke, currently living in Perth, where I emigrated in December after spending the last 7 years bouncing around he world. (That's a lot more painful than it sounds, as most of the world is quite hard to land on).
Moving to Australia has been really exciting, and ridiculously labour-intensive; you should see the paperwork had to fill out! Enough to make a grow man cry... but it had to be done. And, once a little friendly advice had been solicited, re-done correctly...
It was all worth it!
Oh, and I'm married to a stunning Aussie girl called (imaginatively enough) Roo. She has hair dyed in all colours of the rainbow... and consequently is having fun finding work... :0)
I love to read - far more than I love to write! - and I love to travel. Things I hate: stopping reading, stopping travelling, stopping drinking - and getting out of bed. Especially if I'm reading and/or drinking in there...
I'm also absurd. Well, if that's grammatically possible?
Okay. I'm an idiot. That'll do :0)
Looking forward to meeting you all!
Tony

Amber & others, there is a great thread to talk about travels if you haven't browsed it yet, we'd love to hear about where our members have travelled around t..."
Thanks for the link Carmel, I will go and check it out :-)

Hi Tony, I think I have seen you hanging around the Kindle Board. Great to see you here as well. JB :-)

I'm also going to head to that travel thread - travel is what I love most in the world (whoops! After the wife I meant, of course) and I can talk about it forever! Which means you may yet live to regret offering the link to that thread...
For the record, I haven't been to a vast number of places, as some keen travelly-types have - I prefer to spend a while wherever I go, get a feel for the place so to speak. So I live for a year in Thailand, 2 in NZ and 2 here in Oz, had several months in Ecuador (which I wrote about) and a few more in various places around Europe. I think I've visited just over 30 countries at last count, but quite a few of those were just for holidays!
Thanks again folks, look forward to chatting :0)

I've just been invited to give an all-day workshop on self-publishing next year, so I'll be keeping Perth people informed on stuff as the months go by.
Stay tuned.

Rosanne, are you involved with the Perth Writers' Festival? I'll be there for sure next March - I just applied for a job helping to organise it, but I think they were after someone who, you know, had experience of organising things... :0)
I must say, I'm loving Perth at the mo. The temperature is just about right for an English lad like me! I've yet to meet any writers (present company excepted) - but that's probably because I hardly dare leave my desk these days, frantically tapping away at the next great epic! :0)
Hi to Tony and Amber.

I have two teenagers... so nuff said! But I might be going to Bridgetown for that little festival in July... unless it clashes with one of my kids' events. Both musicians, see?
I might have more time for stuff like that in a few years. I am giving a big one-day workshop up at KSP next year - I just gave one a fortnight ago and they want me back. I enjoyed every minute.
Way back before I had the kids I was on the Literature Board - I was much more involved in "live appearances" then. Now I'm mostly half-dead.

Now there's a great argument for kids if ever there was one! I suddenly feel blessed that I've not been... blessed!
I must admit, I don't know how some peope do it (yourself included) - I'm managing to avoid getting a day-job, in order to carry on writing. If I had one of those, who knows how little I'd get done. If I had KIDS... and heaven frbid, a LIFE... well, it just doesn't bear thinking about! :0)

Wow, I had no idea there was a qualification you could do in Librarianship! Sounds like a dream job! Though I'm sure it'll have its less exciting moments, like most office-type jobs. But imagine working every day surrounded by thousands of books... ahhhh!!
Hi David. My husband's an ex-chef too. It's a sod of a job. We ran a restaurant/cafe/gallery together in Braidwood, N.S.W. A librarian sounds a much pleasanter occupation. Far away from hot fat, sharp knives, and the stress of creating ridiculous amounts of food in a very short space of time.
(We also lived on the South Coast of N.S.W until about three, odd years ago. Cobargo, near Bega. )

We had a small baby then too (she's a bit older now) and then I fell pregnant with my second child. At first I'd wait on tables and fill the dishwasher, with my daughter in a backpack on my back. Then she grew too big and I did too (with my son). We left it behind us, sold up and moved on, then on again. Now we live in Tassie, growing and selling organic veggies.
Yep, local markets at the weekends, and we also grow for a local veggie box (Channel Living) scheme. I have chooks and ducks and sell their eggs too. We live in Mathew Evan's country, you know, the Gourmet Farmer?

Welcome Tony! I lived in Perth for a very short time while I was growing up, only for 18 months or so, but I absolutely adore the city! I knew quite a few English people who lived there, kind of polar opposite weather to what they were used to!! :)

Carmel, maybe you could let me know when you decide to come to France. I can point out some "off the beaten track" things for you;

David, I'm kind of in the same boat as you - I'm writing a novel, a compilation of short stories and studying for my Masters thesis From Christ to Constantine. It's a lot of hard work and means I have to be super disciplined with my time but it's well worth the effort. I hope you get the job you're looking for and that it brings you immense satisfaction.

Yes Carmel, I live in France, in the Paris area.
As to presenting myself, well, I don't know about that. I'd be a fish out of water, so to speak, seeing you all are living in Australia! I've joined the group so I can be aware of other Australian authors. But if you have any questions about me I'd be happy to answer.

My name is Karen Tyrrell. I'm the Brisbane author of
Me and Her: A Memoir Of Madness, a teachers journey into and out of Insanity.

I hope no one will take amiss my joining. I'm generally enamored of things Australia, but more to the point, I'm writing from the US, I'm invariably awake at four in the morning, going quietly mad, and no one else in the world appears to be conscious. I'm a retired professor of extraneous-stuff-of-no-particular-interest, and I like extremely short walks on asphalt parking lots, and deconstructing Finnegans Wake. Actually, I'd be happy to talk about *anything* whatever.

Regarding my books, I'm not surprised you haven't read any. To date, they've had a very small circulation. Jenny Schwartz, and Australian author, gave the second one, 'A Taste of Life and Love in Australia', an encouraging review. This same book is also scheduled for Shelleyrae's attention and report on her well respected blog in late July. Fingers crossed!
