Sasha Yay for babbling about travel! (And whatever else!)

I'd say travel is what I do when I'm not reading, but when I'm traveling I'm also usually reading, so that doesn't really work out. We just got back from London and Paris; we've done the major tourist stuff in Paris already, so we were able to spend a lot of time sitting in cafes and parks...reading. Well, reading and drinking. And speaking lousy French. Honestly, I got a much better feel for the city that way than I did visiting the Eiffel Tower, which is, of course, full of people who aren't French.

My uncle's garden an hour outside of Paris, where I did a lot of reading:

Ireland looks gorgeous. We might get to go there next spring! If we do I'll ask you for more details on your itinerary, because that abbey looks freakin' amazing.

Donna, that is really cool! Are you on Etsy?

You can buy them here:

Forever Creative

I also make ones for specific books. That one shown was made for a fellow GR'er and it was for Poison Study

message 7: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Gah! You make them for specific books? That is the coolest f#$%ing idea ever. If you have pics of ones you made for other books, I'd love to see them. (Didn't see book-specific ones on your Etsy.)

And in general, I think you should make ones for big dogs that lots of people read - I'd like to say Anna Karenina but Girl Who Played With Fire is probably a wiser choice. If people knew they could get them from you, they would sell faster than you could make them. It's just a killer, killer idea.

message 8: by Sasha (new)

Sasha That's a pretty doily, and a clearly brilliant child. Glad you're getting her started early on the drum lessons.

We buy a ton of stuff from Etsy too. There's such a lot of weird ideas there...I mean, pretty much everyone in the world who's making some kind of freaky art puts it on Etsy. So if you have the patience to surf around there (which I don't, but my wife does), periodically you find something that really speaks to you; and it's usually affordable, too.

thanks!!! I made a lot of YA ones simply because we do a swap for that specific group but you are right. I think I will do a Stieg Larsson one!

Was there for ten days. We did a giant road trip - travelled more than 1100 miles.Had such a blast. It really is one of the most gorgeous places to visit, even though it rained EVERY DAMN DAY.

Sasha Road trip! Cool way to do it.

How affordable was Ireland?

message 15: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments The Euro stinks for us, but overall not that bad. There are a ton of package deals right now. We went through Dan Dooley and got air/car/B&Bs all for one really reasonable rate. Much lower than if you booked them all individually.

B&B's are pretty cheap and they are ALL OVER. Most of what we did was scenery/historical oriented. Didnt do any fancy dinners, mostly ate (and drank) in pubs the whole time, which kept the food pretty low too.

Having your own car makes you really flexible too, which helps. You dont have to sign up for all the tours and organized activites that cost boatloads.

They also have this cool historical society pass thingy, where it is 21Euro to buy in advance, but you get into basically every historic site/castle/church/etc. for free after that. And it lasts for a year, so you can pass it on to others if you know people going. Definitely wish i knew about that before going...

message 16: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I do all kinds of needlework which include but not limited to kniting, petit point, quilting, etc. If I can ever get my daughter to show me how to add pictures to this site I'll be able to share some of them. I spend a few days a week at a local yarn shop and I also have a group of friends that meet at my place to sew. Also spend alot of time reading, on goodreads and spening time with family and friends eating out or going shopping (of course my favorite is the bookstore) and going to the movies.

message 17: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Karen, if you click the "some html is ok" link above your comment box, it'll show you how to do that - not sure if it'll be enough to help you out, but maybe. :)

Euro apparently took a nosedive yesterday...everyone, quick go to Europe!

Thanks for the tips Bridgit, particularly about the pass! I like the driving / B&B idea; that's the kind of trip we like to take, too.

message 19: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Alex, thanks for the tip. However I'm not very computer savvy. I did see what you said would be ther, But honestly I don't know what a url is. One question though. I now know that you can't click on the link, if that's what it is. lol I have to laugh at myself so some of you might want to join in! Is the link that you see something taht you typr into your browser and that takes you somewhere to explain how to do it? I also don't know what an html is. Go on y'all you can laugh now. I'm kinda, sorta, a litle bit old.

message 20: by Sasha (last edited Aug 12, 2010 01:22PM) (new)

Sasha It's okay Karen, you don't have to be computer savvy here. :)

A URL is a web address. When you type something into your browser, like google.com or icanhascheezburger.com, that's a URL. Sometimes it's longer than that; for instance, the Goodreads URL in your browser right now is pretty long, because it points to this exact page, not just goodreads.com.

A link is some text you can click, like this link to Google, and it'll take you elsewhere.

So when Astrangerhere wanted to post that picture of the UNC soccer team, first she found the URL, which is:
http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/1207/...

If you click this link to go to that URL, you'll see that the only thing on your screen is that picture, and that exact URL shows up in the box on your browser.

Then she typed <img src="http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/1207/...

And that makes the picture show up in your post.

HTML is the word for...well, for making stuff like pictures and links happen. Any time you see those angle brackets - < and > - you're probably seeing HTML.

That probably didn't help much - it's a lot easier to understand when someone's showing you in person than typing at you on the web - but maybe it'll help a little bit.

message 21: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Thanks Alex. I'm going to print this info out. Maybe I can figure out how to do it. And I agree about the someone showing you aspect. It is much easier. I do still have to take notes with an on hands teacher, but at least I'll be able to write hte directions out my way in order to understand better.

message 22: by Bridgit (last edited Aug 12, 2010 01:42PM) (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Karen -

Another way to upload a photo, if you have it on your computer already:

1. go to www.tinypic.com

2. Click on the "BROWSE" button and find the picture on your computer. (it is usually in the My Pictures folder)

3. Once you find the image, click on the "UPLOAD NOW" button

4. (sometimes there is a security feature where you have to type in the words that you see. If there is, type them in as you see them and then hit UPLOAD NOW)

5. The next screen should have 4 fields. the top field should read: "HTML for Website" and then there is a yellow box under it with a long code.

6. Click on the code there and copy it (CTRL + C)

7. Then, come back to your Good reads post and paste the code into the comment box (CTRL + V). That will make your photo appear here on Goodreads once you hit submit.

Hope that helps!

message 25: by Caity (last edited Aug 12, 2010 04:29PM) (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) I travel and do photography, usually together, but certainly not always. I will always do photography while traveling, but sometimes I just do shoots wherever I happen to be.

Photobucket
From my trip to NOLA (New Orleans) last March for the NCAA men's basketball tournament

Photobucket
From a photoshoot I did of some friends

Photobucket
From the same NOLA trip as mentioned above

Photobucket
Taken during a convention my sorority and our brother fraternity hosted at our school

Photobucket
Taken at the end of an outdoor concert that concluded in the 1812 Overture, with canons, fireworks, full symphonic orchestra, and full (and huge) choir

Photobucket
Taken in NYC from Central Park

Photobucket
Sunset over the Hudson Bay in NYC on July 4, 2009

Photobucket
Taken in San Antonio, TX as we band members prepared for the semi-final game against UConn during the women's NCAA basketball tournament

I could go on posting pictures all day, but I think I have enough. I also used to be in marching, concert, and basketball band playing sax (tenor and bari), and I have a degree in film (it looks pretty on my wall...). Lately I've just been doing a lot of waiting.

The other big thing I did during college, though, was this:
A News Sensation
A Latte Love

message 26: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Cindy, those shots are amazing. I like photography, but my only successful shots have kindof a lonely quality to them. Shots like your last, the Texas shot...that hits something terrific that I'm very jealous of. You can take my kind of picture too - that accordion player, for example - but your skill for showing personality (like that black guy shot) must come in handy an awful lot, because you can turn normal picture-taking situations into really good photographs. I totally lack that skill. Those are really nice pics.

message 27: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Thanks, Alex, but I'm pretty sure my name is Caity, not Cindy.

message 28: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Hell, I knew I was mistyping that and made a mental note to go back and check it, and clearly got too excited about photography to do so. Sorry, Caity.

IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards

URL for E-Mail & IM

Direct Link for Layouts

You want to choose the very top most one: HTML for Websites. The one that starts with:

Caity (adivineeternity) Scrapbooking! That's another thing I do... Sort of. I need to work on that, but I'm too lazy to print the pictures for it. Well, that and I need to figure out how to organize it.

I also really like to play with my cats:

This is Misha.

Photobucket
And this is Emma. They're sisters and my baby girls.

And just because I think this one is really cool:
Photobucket

message 43: by Sasha (new)

Sasha God Caity, even your cat pictures are good. What camera do you have? We use a Rebel.

message 44: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Actually, the picture of Emma was taken with my iPhone (which is why it's a bit grainy). The two pictures from NYC in my first post were taken with a Sony Cypershot W30 (point and shoot). The rest of them were taken with a Pentax K20D and I think an 18-55mm lens.

If I am able to get a job soon enough, I'm going to save for, at minimum, a Canon Rebel T2i, because all I have is the Sony point-and-shoot right now, and that's a let down after the Pentax, which I borrowed from the journalism department at school.

Photobucket
This one was taken on a Rebel XTi with an 18-55mm lens during my school's big holiday in 2009. If I had gotten the girl's name and her parents' permission, it would have been published in our newspaper.

Photobucket
And this was taken with the same lens as above, but using a Canon D40. There was a hot air balloon flying over campus one day and they landed behind our art and theatre building, so I sprinted halfway across campus barefoot to get pics.

message 45: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Alex, Bridgetand Erika. This has killed me also. I get the pic to show on tinypic.com, but I can't seem to transfer it to this site. I can't seem to get into photobucket (it keeps giving me an error message). And I do know if y'all are running out of patience, but I sure am. I know that I'm doing something wrong but I can't seem to figure out what it is. I'm even having problems downloading a pic for my avatar. Maybe for your SANITY and mine I should just wait for some hands on help. I really do appreciate all the help that y'all have given me. It may take me a few weeks to get some over here but I'm not gonna give up.

message 46: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) For anybody who would like to post pics but is struggling to do so, here is a quick guide with pictures so you can see what to do with tinypic.com (after you get it uploaded):

Once you have uploaded your pic, you'll get a screen like this:
Photobucket

The code you want is in the box indicated by "HTML for Websites:"
Photobucket

Click in that box so that the entire thing is highlighted:
Photobucket

Then copy and paste the entire thing into a comment box on GR:
Photobucket

You can hit enter after the code, as I did, and write a comment beneath the picture, as well. If all is done properly, then you should have a lovely picture in your post!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Look! It's a picture! And I'm a comment! :D

message 48: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice Caity, your my angel! The one thing that I didn't know to do was to hit enter after the code was posted. Thankyou, thank you.

This is a from my patio right before the storm hit.
