So what are you saying Barb? You don't want in our club?

message 102: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I probably never will. Maybe we could have a subgroup in our club for us.

message 103: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I never thought of you as a joiner, Larry. Are you the kind of man who belongs to a club, or the kind of man with a club that belongs to him?

message 104: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) It depends on my mood on any given day, Jonathan. But thanks for asking.

message 105: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Anytime.

message 106: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) We still haven't heard from janine.

message 107: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Come to think of it, you could probably form a club for people who wield clubs. The two activities are not mutually exclusive.

i might be quitting the club next week, because i still plan on seeing true romance. quentin tarantino is butt ugly, but i adore his films.

unless there are cool club activities of course.

Félix (habitseven) Now that BunWat has joined, I feel certain there will be cool club activities, in spite of Jonathan's warped ideas about mutual exclusivity. But then, he hasn't actually joined us yet.

Don't quit, janine, no mattter if you see it or not. Just don't tell us if you do.

message 111: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Well, I'd love to join, but I've seen True Romance, Pulp Fiction, etc. So I think I'm not up to club standards.

If, however, the club activities will be as cool as you're suggesting, Larry, I might be inclined to lie about my qualifications in order to meet the entry requirements.

message 112: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Being a good liar is one of the basic qualifications. Why, I myself ... oh never mind.

message 113: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I never minth words about plinths.

message 114: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I thought it was a pillar.

message 115: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Honestly?

message 116: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) (I won't tell anyone.)

message 117: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Hey Jonathan -- is that picture of My Shady Hero Nixon supposed to represent "jawboning?"

message 118: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments What is True Romance?

Boy now there's a loaded question.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Is is something like Lady Gaga's Bad Romance?

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Larry wrote: "Hey Jonathan -- is that picture of My Shady Hero Nixon supposed to represent "jawboning?""

I believe that is a jawbone he's holding but have no idea what the occasion could have been with all the festive cave-person garb.

message 122: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Well it made me think.

message 123: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Oh yes, the image could certainly be seen as a visual pun.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Anybody here read any Will Self? Is he any good?

message 125: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments True Romance was my favorite Tarantino movie. I loved loved loved it when it came out. It has a sweeter soul than most of his movies, and a FANTASTIC cast.

RandomAnthony wrote: "Anybody here read any Will Self? Is he any good?"

No. To the first question. In my mind I associate him with Nick Hornby, whether that's fair or unfair, and I do not like Hornby's fiction.

message 127: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Hmm. I don't know Will Self, but I like Nick Hornby.

message 128: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Hornby has a secret joy behind most of his books - even the more cynical ones.

message 129: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yes and no. Music is a common theme, but the relationships are complicated, and not necessarily romantic relationships.
He wrote a book about four strangers who all had the same idea to jump off the tallest roof in town on the same night. And a very funny book about faith in which a couple that goes through a crisis when the husband undergoes a dramatic personal change. And some great essays about his son with developmentally disabilities.
And yeah, music.

message 130: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Thanks for the Self feedback, people...

message 131: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i'd like to add i like hornby. right now i'm reading fever pitch which, even though it's very much like a memoir centered around his passion for arsenal, and i never read memoirs, or know much about football, is a great read. it's more an analysis of his love for football and the culture of football and how it has shaped his life than an analysis of all the games he went to, even though that's how the book is ordered.

message 132: by [deleted user] (new)

Hornby's latest novel, Juliet, Naked was sublime and very touching. Like Sarah stated before, music is a big part of his novels, but this one truly touched about the one-on-one, love-hate relationships music fans have with their favorite artists, and vice versa. I dare say this may be Hornby's finest novel yet.

message 133: by [deleted user] (new)

Everyone keeps telling me to read it, Gus. One of them even gave me the book and told me I could keep it. Ordinarily that would not bode well for the book, but She doesn't re-read...ever, and she doesn't save things either, so it really didn't mean anything.

Still, there it sits on my shelf.

message 134: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments If I give someone a book it doesn't necessarily mean that I didn't like it. Actually, it's more likely that I loved it and can't bear not to share it.

I liked Juliet, Naked too.

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

Kev, Winona Ryder has been lame for a LONG time. Pretty much since Reality Bites.

message 136: by [deleted user] (new)

"Gretchen wrote Do you like films Gus?

I still totally heart Gus, I've missed Gus.

Barb: ... I can honestly say that seeing Quentin Tarantino's name on a movie actually makes me avoid it.

Me too, without fail. I think I was the only person I knew at the time that hated Pulp Fiction. Plus, he's just so smarmy and full of himself!

True Romance...I had no idea it was a Tarantino movie, but it was shite too.

message 138: by [deleted user] (new)

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm just a selfish bitch. Not really, just don't like people touching my books sometimes...and my paints. Otherwise I share.

message 140: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Hmm. My 5th star is "I loved it so much that every time I see a used copy I will buy it so that I have giveaway copies to press on my friends."

message 141: by [deleted user] (new)

Now there's an idea!

I'm here! Just doing my usual hit-and-run on TC before I start hanging around her more, once time permits.

Brrrr.

I have a huge nice copy of Adventures of Mark Twain to read. Either that or a Beatles biography.

Which should I read next?
(I'm working through JOTC, LG.)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I really loved the girl in the foreign film, but at least they tried to keep some of the edge with Mara's look. Lisbeth needs that edge. There was just something about the foreign film actress (don't remember her name) that spoke to me.

Phil | 11837 comments I hate airbrushed photos. Nobody's chest is that smooth. Hollywood always goes overboard, too -- making her too flashy alt.

I thought Larsson went overboard, myself. She came off like a cartoon character.

I'm one twentieth of the way into a 1000 page reading project. Cut me some slack!

There is no slack-cutting at Lobstergirl University.
