I nominate Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill. It is a story about a young girl kidnapped from Africa and sold into slavery. It carries her struggles through being a slave, the Revolutionary War, and her further struggles to become a person recognized as a human being. The book spans sixty years.
Hey Marialyce and everyone, Someone Knows My Name was published in Canada as The Book of Negroes. Not sure why the title change, but I just picked up that book! In 2009, it won a national yearly radio contest we have called Canada Reads. Super excited that that book got nominated!
