Liz I love Miss Austen as well, most ardently!

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Ah. Becky, you are very smart. just saying. Me, I have not read Austen so I am staying neutral.

message 753: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments The only reason why I haven't read Jane Austen yet is that I have this huge hardcover of her full novels and I really don't care like dragging it around. I'm thinking I should've bought all of her books separately.

message 754: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That's why I don't like to get those huge collections. They are... huge. O_o

message 755: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I thought it was a good deal at the time. It was $12 for all of her novels. I'll probably break down soon and just buy them all separately, just so I can read Jane Austen and see whether or not I like her writing style.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Getting the whole collection can be annoying if you have to keep them together otherwise if you can seperate them and it has a deal offer than I guess it is ok.

message 757: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 5 comments Just two
1. Jane Eyre
2. The Yearling

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Ari said Jane Eyre:

I tried reading that and had to stop, got really bored. So I have to agree.

You should see if you can get them from Paperbackswap or a used bookstore, or from the library even. If you've never read them, you shouldn't pay twice for them!

message 760: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments At least you don't have to worry about whether or not all the books you have by her match, if you care about that sort of thing.

But I also love Jane Austen :)

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments A lot of people like Austen, A lot of people don't. And a lot of those people are part of this group. Sorry. It just seems to keep coming back to Austen. Scroll up. You will see what I mean.

message 762: by Maggie (new)

Maggie | 9 comments I always feel guilty when I say I don't like Jane Austen's books - I have read some but I just don't like them. Each to their own. Nothing could make me read Lord of the Rings though.

message 763: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Why not? Have you tried them?

message 764: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments Whaaat, Lord of the Rings is SWEET.

message 765: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Jessi wrote: "Whaaat, Lord of the Rings is SWEET."

Yes. Yes they are.

message 766: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) I liked them, but they involve a *lot* of exposition. That's the appeal, really. So if you aren't into the "world-building" I can see why it's not very interesting.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Got me through my adolescence - The Lord of the Rings deserves a medal!

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments I don't want to offend anybody, but I really don't like Lord of the Rings! My brother is 8 years older than me so when he was like i don't know 12? He really liked them and used to watch them and it really creeps me out!

message 769: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10631 comments Mod
Mahum, everyone is entitled to an opinion, do not think that just because you dislike a book someone else does that it will end up offending them.

It also goes without saying that, this being a thread about books you didnt like, you are bound to see lots of people discussing the pros and cons of said books....

Just go with the flow.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Thank you Lori, you are very nice and very wise. There are a lot of smart people in this thread!!!!

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Personally, Xox, I quite like Narnia.

message 772: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL Xox... Tell us how you really feel! :P

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Well, Xox, I guess it was kind of anti- women and preachy. But I do think it was good writing.

Like I said, it was good writing and a waste of talent. He could have wrote a much..."

Well, I guess it is just a matter of opinion.

message 775: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 10 comments I want to like Jane Austen. Really I do. I loved P&P the movie and miniseries, but I picked up the book to start reading a few years ago and just had a hard time getting into it. Maybe I should try again. Here are my picks for worst books I've read:

1. Wuthering Heights. I read one chapter and hadn't gotten into it at all by then so I took it back to Goodwill. :-)

2. The Lovely Bones. Someone here said it wasn't as good as the hype. I agree very much with that.

3. Revolutionary Road. Eh. The movie looked intriguing so I read the book. It was only OK and the movie kinda sucked.

4. Twilight - the entire series. Can we say...overrated?!?! I don't mind young adult fiction every now and again (The Hunger Games trilogy is one I HIGHLY recommend!), but come on. Whiny characters drive me crazy! Not to mention her boyfriend wanted to eat her because she smelled good. Oh geez.

Maggie | 9 comments I love Narnia too! Yes, did start Lord of th Rings - do not like though.

message 777: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 10 comments I'm reading The Chronicles of Narnia right now. I don't dislike them, but I think there's something to be said for growing up reading them as opposed to reading them for the first time when you're 24...

message 778: by Chantelle (new)

Chantelle (chantelle13) | 90 comments Definitely the Twilight series...top of my list.
Don't hate me - The Book Thief. I love Holocaust-era literature and usually *must* finish books I've started to read. I've gotten over halfway through it and just. can't. finish. it. It kind of breaks my heart.

Me too. Tried 3x to read that and couldn't continue.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments I hate the twilight series most of all! I mean, it is just pointless. And as for the book thief, I keep thinking oh, maybe I should read it but then I read the back or the inside flap and it just puts me off. And I find that really annoying.

message 781: by jessi (new)

jessi (infinitevantage) | 86 comments Xox wrote: "1. Book of Mormon - Absolute bullshit and boring.

Xox, I didn't know you were in this group! :) Anyways, I'd have to agree, but generally speaking, a lot of Christian stuff goes without saying. Notable exceptions being Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments I think I agree with you Jessi. And Xox, I know this sounds like a parent and patronising, but it is the way I was raised: Please mind your language.

I tried reading Moby Dick and couldn't get very far, I don't think I made it to the third chapter. BUt I do like James Patterson's Maximum Ride and Daniel X series.

Woah. Xox... we do not verbally assault books like that here in TNBBC. That language is really uncalled for and offensive, ESPECIALLY when you consider what it is that you are assaulting.

I am going to ask that you go back and edit your posts. I am not asking that you change which books you dislike - just the way you express your dislike.

Further posts like these can potentially lead to your removal from the group.

Just a heads up.

message 786: by Carol (last edited Mar 08, 2010 04:26PM) (new)

Carol I like his Maximum Ride series also just not the Alex Cross ones. To psychotic for me. I think I read the first 10 chapters of Moby Dick and chucked it back on the shelf. Maybe one day in the far future. My crystal ball says not for another 10 years.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Thank you, both Lori and Carol( a kitty kat). So Carol, I have not read his Alex Cross series, but it seems to have done very well. I wonder why he writes psychotic books along with Maximum Ride and Daniel x. His books seem to very from genre to genre. Don't you think?

message 788: by Carol (new)

Carol His first books were the Alex Cross series. Along Came A Spider,Jack and Jill, Roses are Red etc. It deals with the criminally insane. yes his books vary a lot . But I think my favorite is the Maximum Ride books.

message 789: by Carol (new)

Carol Sigh Xox you did not edit your posts enough. This club has all age groups. Some as young as 11 years old. I find your views interesting and compelling, just not your choice of expressing them.

message 790: by Carol (last edited Mar 08, 2010 05:04PM) (new)

Carol I did not realize that Rowling had hate mail. I did not read Harry Potter, but I did see a couple of the movies. I found nothing different than The Sword and The Stone or other fantasy books.

message 791: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 10 comments I'm not surprised she has hate mail. I know in a lot of conservative churches Harry Potter is looked down upon because of the witchcraft and whatnot. This is not my personal view (although I do attend a more conservative church) because the HP series is probably one of my most favorite (if not absolute favorite) series' of books. I can respect if people don't like it and have reasons to back it up, however, I get really turned off when people attack Harry Potter and say it's evil and horrible and terrible and they haven't even read them to know what they're talking about.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Xox wrote: "Jessi,

I hope Rowling would have a public fall out with her religion after all the hate mail and attack she got from the church people.

Good to see you here."

By Rowling, Do you mean J.K. Rowling?

message 793: by Carol (new)

Carol Xox my profile is private only my friends have access. You do not. How did you compare my books with yours? I looked at yours and we don't have a lot of books in common, but you do have interesting shelves. There are some there I am considering adding to my list.

And some people find any foul language offensive. The choice is yours though.

message 794: by Carol (new)

Carol Don't think so. They rarely make mistakes here. So What books do you really really have no use for other than religious thesis? Are there any other genre's you do not like? Me personally I don't like the horror books. I just can't settle into them.

message 795: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10631 comments Mod
Xox... I find it interesting that you think it is a religious bias, as I never mentioned religion in my post to you. And you still need to go back and edit your first post.. it is still filled with profanity.

I am not sure where you see me typing in all caps. And I certainly hope you are not calling me rude, after your choice of launguage and childish display of dislike.

It is my job as moderator of this group to protect my members from abusive language and hostile posts.

You are correct, by the way. There are alot of books being bashed here. However, if you go back and read through them - compare and contrast yours to everyone elses - the other members are respectful and bash the books tastefully.

Again, you have a choice. Follow the guidelines and behave respectfully. If you would rather not, you are free to leave the group. If you CANNOT, or CHOOSE not, well.. then...

For clarification:
ANY curse word is considered inappropriate. Unless of course, you would allow a child to use the word "shit".

To be honest, I dont think it is the WORD perse, but the way in which you chose to use it.

message 797: by Carol (new)

Carol Xox you do not want to make Lori angry. We all like different views. No one is trying to censor you. Just your chosen language style.

Mahum *It's Summer!!!!* (madaboutmusic) | 65 comments Yeah, I do not think you would like getting kicked out of a thread, Xox.

message 799: by Carol (last edited Mar 08, 2010 06:12PM) (new)

The Dave Barry books I have not read anything by him , they sounded interesting.

message 800: by Carol (new)

Carol No that thread is dire judgment. This one is what someone personally can't get through or does not like.
