ipod helplessness

Does anyone know why some things in my itunes library will not be show up in my ipod when I search them by Artist.
i.e. if I want to hear King Kong by Daniel Johnsten I can find it by searching under "song" but I can't find Daniel Johnsten listed under "Artist"

I've had weird crap happen where the album info is set to a "compilation" and then the artist doesn't appear.

yes! I don't want to put to fine a point on this but YOU ARE FUCKING AWESOME!!! I mean I knew you were great when you wrote about the little boy that exposed himself to your daughter but now I really think you're great!!!!! I have been frustrated by that stupid glitch for years and you were right! I unclicked "compilation" and there he is, Daniel Johnston listed under Artist.
