Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments how about one about a historical time period...something like, if you could travel back through time to any period, read a non-fiction book about it as well as a fiction book...

I agree that the best site would be one that gives the most options. Thanks for checking it for various titles. All of the ones I threw in gave more options.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Thanks to everyone who liked the fair task.
in reponse to the person from the UK, midway food would be any wonderful junk food that is eaten at a fair or festival. It wouldn't have to be from the USA as long as the food is described, and it isn't something usually eaten at home - it would be great to learn about "fair food" from other countries.

Ah ha! That would be me asking about midway food. Thanks for the explanation :) Fair food in the UK is usually hot dogs, burgers and so on, but festival stalls have almost anything - noodles, curries, fancy pies... I like Cornish pasties myself!

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments In the Pumpkin Patch

I. Read two books, each one that features a type of pumpkin in the title. Types of Pumpkins

Example: Autumn Gold - Blood and Gold by Anne Rice AND Sugar Sweet - The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen

OR

II. Which pumpkin size do you like best? Baby or Jumbo? How about both! Read (1) book that's 100+ pages AND (1) book that's 600+ pages. This is a two book task.

Example: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (288 pages) AND Dune by Frank Herbert (608 pages)

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Use a random number generator then use that number and read the book on your to be read shelf that matches that number.

Does that make sense?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments does it have to match it exactly or can there be + or - ten pages? Also what type of pumpkins are there?

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I have ideas but I'm not sure how to turn them into book ideas. Can someone/anyone help me? I'd like to work with someone through messages.

Will this work for people who completed the the challenege???

message 266: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (eagle1964) | 270 comments There has been no mention of reading anything other thyan a book. What about magazines?? Most are more that 100 pages and you could select one you consistently read and one you would not normally if ever read. Just asking.

I want to remind everyone of the opportunity to win the chance to design a task for the Fall Challenge via task 20.6 Seasoned Reader- the new take on "Always a Bridesmaid"

20.6 SEASONED READER – Each player who has never created a task for any challenge earns one ticket for each challenge they have participated in. For example, if this is your first challenge you would be awarded one ticket. If this is your third challenge, you would get 3 tickets.
A random ticket will be drawn to determine who creates this task.
Players selected for this task will not be eligible to be selected for this task again.

We are building a database to distribute tickets. We need to know your participation in past challenges. Please post your information in the Bridesmaids or Rookies thread in the Summer Challenge Folder

Moderators decision: no tasks requiring only magazines

Goodreads Librarian's Manual says that magazines are "unencouraged" which means no one could post a link.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thank you, PJ. I think the last magazine I picked up was a cooking magazine. I don't read them, and certainly not cover to cover.

message 272: by Amy (new)

Amy (jusamy) | 166 comments Thanksgiving Dinner:
Read a book with some ingredient of Thanksgiving dinner in the title: Mashed Potatoes = The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Halloween: Read a novel in the "horror" genre

On the East Coast, in N.C. There is an October Bike Rally. Read a book with a motorcycle on the cover.

Are You Ready for Some Football? Read a book about football, or that has your favorite team in the title: Ex: If you like the Dallas Cowboys:
Living Dead in Dallas or
The Cowboy

message 273: by Amy (new)

Amy (jusamy) | 166 comments Costume Party! Read a book with what you are dressing up as in the title: Son of a Witch or The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I like that one Amy. Great Task!

message 275: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments I like it too! It works for many things even if you are not dressing up you could read something with what you would dress up as in the title.

message 276: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments In Mexico, Halloween is a time devoted the dead...literally. Except in Mexico, the celebration starts at midnight on October 31st. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is actually on November 2.

Read a book that takes place in Mexico or is about Mexico.

OR Read a book with DAY or DEAD in the title.

OR Read a book with a predominantly Red, White, or Green cover

Wanna know how flaky I am after my workout? I thought you were trying to claim points. Wow, do I need my head examined or what? lol

The football one could be fun...would it need to be a pro team (ie. could I use my school district's team)? Or what about sports teams in general, so we can include the international peoples, too?

And the potato one is just cute :3

message 278: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) November is (amongst other things) National American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month. Read a non-fiction book on the history of any American Indian or Alaskan Native tribe or an individual.

For a two-book challenge, read a book as mentioned above AND read a fictional story in which the main characters are American Indians or Alaskan Natives.

message 279: by Nicki (new)

Nicki (luluminstrel) | 279 comments Please, if you decide on an American sports-related task can there be options for those of us not in the US? There was a task a year or so ago about baseball that was really hard for us foreigners :)

message 280: by Usako (last edited Aug 12, 2010 06:37AM) (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Turn Over a New Leaf -- Read a book about a favorite past-time NOT of your country. Example: I am from the US. So I wouldn't read a book about pumpkin chuckin' or American football. I could read about High Noon Teas, soccer, bullfighting, etc.

For those unfamiliar with pumpkin chuckin...

Elizabeth (Alaska) Tanja, soccer is a very big sport in this country, so you couldn't read a book about soccer.

message 282: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments Hopefully one or more tasks will focus on covers .... I think it's so cool that goodreads allows you to post covers in comments! Either covers of a specific color or a cover with a tree on it or whatever .... maybe a cover with a Halloween symbol on it? (one example: a dancing skeleton The Dance of Death (Roger the Chapman, #18) by Kate Sedley ) or whatever the task designers come up with.

message 283: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 815 comments Deedee are you thinking something like...

Read a book whose cover is predominantly a fall color (red, orange, yellow, brown).

or

Read a book with a picture that is normally a halloween figure (i.e. skeleton, pumpkin, witch, ghost, haunted house, spiderweb, etc.)

message 284: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments Or read a book with a picture of someone wearing a mask or costume (if it is historical, the costume must be from a time period different than the book's)

message 285: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments Read an adult fiction with at least six pictures in it--can be anything from the old tipped-in pictures in the novels from 1920-40's to a graphic novel.

Sarah D | 9 comments Go to www.yournextread.com and enter the last book you read or the first book you read for the Fall Challenge (not sure what the easier/best option would be) and read one of the books that it recommends.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I put in a book on that one and it came up with seven other versions of the same book, including one in Spanish.

I got the same thing as Elizabeth...it just gave me other versions of the same book, and there was one other book with a similar name.

Sarah D | 9 comments Fail.

Well it worked well with the few books I tried. Oh well, better to figure it out now rather than later.

I think you have to click on your version of the book and then it gives 8 other titles that are similar. Then if you click 'more books' it gives up to 8 more options.

message 292: by Sarah D (new)

Sarah D | 9 comments Thanks Patricia for noting that. I forgot to mention that you do have to click on the book you are reading in order for the "spider web" looking thing to show up!

It might be better if we are allowed to test more than one book. Apparently, my favorite book is good for testing these sites, as it is not a widely read book. Once again, the site was only able to recommend books by the same author (with the exception of To Kill a Mockingbird).

Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I put in a book on that one and it came up with seven other versions of the same book, including one in Spanish."

The initial results are possible matches of your query. The site asks that you select the intended book and then it will display "your next read" based on your pick.

Example: The last book I read was Almayer's Folly: A Story of an Eastern River by Joseph Conrad.

-After my search I got these results: possible matches for Almayer's Folly

-Then I selected one of these matches and the site displayed eight other books I may be interested: my next read

So the site seems to be working. Just need to go an extra step. I like your task idea Sarah!

message 295: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (last edited Aug 12, 2010 01:05PM) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I re-did it and it gave me 4 by the same author, 2 of which I've already read, and 4 others. Still, do I want to be reading more of the same with a challenge? I thought the object was to stretch your wings.

ETA: The last thing I need is another site suggesting books for me to read. I'm having a hard enough time keeping up with the books I learn about here and in other groups.

message 296: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments I found the site worked best if I was not reading a book that was part of a series. But the stand-alones had some very interesting choices.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I never read series, so I'm not sure that's true.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Jayme and I came up with this idea: Mazes (part of the fun of a pumpkin patch). So read a book where a maze is part of the plot. A maze is like a puzzle that you have to figure out, so read a book where the main character has to figure something out.

Also what if instead of using initals we used the title of the book for FALL... for example: Lover's Lane
