Nikki Boisture Is it that much more difficult to use proper grammar and ask "Where are you?"

message 2: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell Indeed, there you be.

message 3: by Tesse (new)

Tesse (hooksinmyhead) WAZZZAP?

Inspired by Donna, I really wanted to see Montgomery Clift say wazzzap.

Then we'd have to change the name of that Beck song to "Where It Is." Singing that chorus just doesn't have the same ring....

"Where it is...I got two turntables and a microphone."

Nope, not the same.

message 5: by Tesse (new)

Tesse (hooksinmyhead) I am sure Nikki will allow for poetic license when she sees fit.

Nikki Boisture Absolutely. I like grammar, but I don't mean to be the grammar nazi. Beck is Beck, I hereby grant him that poetic license. (Also, we'd have to change it to "I HAVE two turntables and a microphone). The average redneck walking down the street talking on his cell phone and saying "where you at?" does not get the same license.

Emma Blue (litlover) I also hate when teens use "Gangsta" or "wud" instead of with. Ahh!

message 8: by Carlie (new)

Carlie .....I bet that's what the real English constantly say of American English. Y'all really need to realize that language is not static and much of our present sentence structure, grammar, and vocabulary would not be acceptable to the people of the past. I think it's exciting how the youth of today are changing the language and can't wait to see how different it is decades from now. If language is about communication, as long as your target comprehends your meaning, does it really matter?
And I dare say I am shocked how many people don't know about artistic license. I get sick and tired of hearing complaints about Timbaland's "the way I are". SO kudos to you Nikki and Tesse.
But I do acknowledge how biting it can be to the ear to hear improper grammar but it seems it will soon become the proper grammar and we'll just sound like whining old fogies. :)

message 9: by Carlie (new)

Carlie and isn't it Where y'at?

message 10: by Tesse (new)

Tesse (hooksinmyhead) The apostrophe is optional.

message 11: by Carlie (new)

Carlie I wasn't aware of that option. do u mean where yat?

message 12: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Boisture It's funny the way different ears hear the same thing. Putting aside that it's grammatically incorrect, to me "Where you at?," sounds harsh and demanding. Kind of drill sergeant-esque. Maybe it's the hard T at the end of the sentence. On the other hand, "Where are you?" has a softer more polite tone.

message 13: by Mama'sGurl115 (new)

Mama'sGurl115 i know what u mean...i want to be an english teacher so i am CONSTANTLY correcting my own teachers grammar. SO ANNOYING!!

message 14: by Tracy (new)

Tracy capitalization is overrated.

although admittedly, it's probably best to only forgo one of the above at a time, lest you look like a moron.

message 15: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) Wow, I wish I would have known that you had translated it below before I struggled through the block form. It hurt my eyes.

message 16: by Mama'sGurl115 (new)

Mama'sGurl115 i correct my friends all the time too and it drives them crazy, but my mom does it to me at home. i think it's become a habbit, correcting grammar.

Jackie "the Librarian" How do you feel about having your spelling corrected? Or your capitalization?

message 18: by Mama'sGurl115 (new)

Mama'sGurl115 i hate it...but all people have their quirks. like my friend loves talking about her boyfriend for hours on end, but anyone does, and it's illegal

message 19: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Boisture Am I the only one who does not quite understand what mzzzz is saying here?

message 20: by Tracy (new)

Tracy i believe that talking about one's boyfriend for hours on end is in fact, legal. even if it is very, very annoying.

message 21: by Inkdaub (new)

Inkdaub I love slang and find it fascinating but I hate people who use it naturally and seriously.

message 22: by Mama'sGurl115 (new)

message 23: by Gemma (new)
