Outlander Series discussion

Things that make me go hmmm....
The sheep comment got me too! I have no clue what Jamie meant by that. We all know he loves her behind, but other than that I'm not too sure!
He's always saying how beautiful she is though...surely he doesn't think that.
I've only read the first three books, so not sure what other topics you're talking about. Hope you figure them out!
:)
The sheep comment was a thought he had, when still hadn't really seen her, had only heard her voice, felt her presence, and just knew she was the one. So what he meant was, it didn't matter to him what she looked liked, she simply was the one for him, and he knew it beyond a shadow of a doubt, instantly, without even seeing her. Lucky for him, Claire was beautiful cause he would've married her even if she had a face of a sheep. Atleast, this was my take on it.
Shell wrote: "The sheep comment was a thought he had, when still hadn't really seen her, had only heard her voice, felt her presence, and just knew she was the one. So what he meant was, it didn't matter to him ..."I think your right :) Thanks for the input!
I agree with Shell. Plus I think he is just screwing around. That scene made me laugh out loud- one of my favorites in the whole series! As far as Brianna's bracelet, that doesn't make sense to me either. Hoping someone can explain it.
Here is another hmmm moment that isn't addressed in the books, but this whole time travel thing has my mind whirling. If Jem does go back in time and stays, marries, and has children, did he have great, great grandchildren older than him when he was in the 1900's, going to school?
This discussion is making me want to go back and read Outlander for a 3rd time. I love that scene when Jamie tells Claire he loves her. I also think he was just teasing her with the sheep comment.
Shell wrote: "The sheep comment was a thought he had, when still hadn't really seen her, had only heard her voice, felt her presence, and just knew she was the one. Well that, and I want to read the highlander ghost scene in which Jamie is watching Claire through her window.
Dorothy wrote: "Here is another hmmm moment that isn't addressed in the books, but this whole time travel thing has my mind whirling. That, and wondered if Bree and Roger were going to find the current Frasers in the future (descendants of Ian and Jenny). I also wondered what would stop Claire from being born (even if she dies in the past) because her ancestors are still alive and kicking in England and France... what is going to stop her birth?
i really love the quote on Brianna's bracelet from Roger, especially that it is in french! so i did a research on what it meant because i wanted to buy the actual bracelet. apparently its what you say when you pluck the petals from a flower and say "he loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, he loves me not....." So you say " je t'aime beaucoup, un peau, passionement, pas du tout" for each petal.
Dorothy & Amy, Me too wondering the same thing. -- How Bree, Roger, Jem, and Mandy fit in to the future. Does that mean J&C's direct Fraser line has 200 years gap? (Between they step thru the stone in late 1700's to the time they went back to the future in late 1900's.) If anyone can explain to me in plain English, please do. If not, I hope to see Diana at the National Book Festival in DC in September whenever the opportunity arise I will definitely ask her.

There is an entire thread dedicated to this, where I remember having a passionate exchange of ideas with Shell, Heather, and numerous others.... there are many theories, and we can't all agree but Diana did explain her idea about time travel in the Companion. Her idea is that time is linear, so if Claire goes back in time, she exists there and she is not born again in the future. I like to think of the time thing as circular - that we can change the past by our actions which effect the future,\; so she would still be born in the 1900's and possibly repeat the traveling back in time until something in the past changes the future (like killing your great-great-great-great-grandma, so that things don't 'line up' the same in the future). Just my thoughts - haven't read Echo yet cause I'm holding out, so I've yet to read about Jem traveling....
Mara wrote: "i really love the quote on Brianna's bracelet from Roger, especially that it is in french! so i did a research on what it meant because i wanted to buy the actual bracelet. apparently its what you ..."I'm glad you clarified this! I was wondering about it too.
The sheep comment was Jamie teasing Claire. He was laughing and she was throwing things at him while he was making those statements.
Here's one that makes me wonder in Voyager: Why did Jamie think he needed to offer his body to Lord John in exchange for John giving him word of his son from time to time. Seems way over the top for me. They had already established a friendship at that point. I just thought jeez Jamie how about trying to just ask a favor first.
I think Diana used it to illustrate the magnitude of the situation and I guess Jamie was looking to 'proove' to LJ that he would do anything to ensure William's protection. His self sacrifice in that situation made it really powerful and personally, I liked it.
Eva was right. In the later book(don't remember which on), Claire asked Jamie that very question -- what would he do if LJ took him up on his offer. His answer -- he probably would snap LJ neck and kill him on the spot.
Sarah wrote: "Here's one that makes me wonder in Voyager: Why did Jamie think he needed to offer his body to Lord John in exchange for John giving him word of his son from time to time. And there was a specific reason for Jamie's "offer".
One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to the right time. If that is the case, how did Claire accidentally end up in the past initially? She was just looking at some plant at the stones, so how did she end up at that specific time period?
I haven't read Echo in the Bone yet, as I am trying to stretch the series as long as possible to avoid withdrawals until the next book. I don't want any spoilers on that book, but I was wondering, does she address who the mystery hand in Fiery Cross belongs to? Remember when they were at Jocasta's for some celebration and the men & women all slept in different rooms. Claire was lying in the dark and someone started rubbing her feet and upward. She suspected it was Jamie, but wasn't 100% certain. Do we have confirmation yet as to whose hand it was?
Theresa wrote: "One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to the right time. If that is ..."She did notice that the plant was really unusual, and had never seen it before. Since Diana seemed to hint that other living things could travel through the stones (loch ness monster), perhaps this plant, now extinct, also traveled through the stones from the 1700's. Which could explain why she went back there after thinking about the plant. Or it could just be the 200 year thing. I dunno. Def something to make you go hmmm.
Wan wrote: "Yes it was Jamie."Yeah... I don't think it was confirmed in the books, but Diana confirmed it herself in a question/answer session.
Theresa wrote: "One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to the right time. If that is ..."I do recall reading something about that, and apparently it was Black Jack Randall who she transported to (not Jamie - and BJR was the first one she met as well) because she was thinking of him and her conversation with Frank about his ancestor..
Eva wrote: "Theresa wrote: "One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to the right t..."ohhhhhh I never thought of that.... but that makes sense
I considered that, since Frank had been talking to her about him. I thought maybe I was reaching though, because she didn't really seem all that interested in the information. That seems the most probable though. Thanks! Also, thanks for the info on Jamie's hands.
Eva wrote: "Theresa wrote: "One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to the right t..."Oh!! I didn't think of that. That's good one Eva. Now it makes perfect sense.

I always thought about what brought her to that specific time n that makes perfect sense. Man I have to read these books again!
Stacia wrote: "Shell wrote: "The sheep comment was a thought he had, when still hadn't really seen her, had only heard her voice, felt her presence, and just knew she was the one. So what he meant was, it didn't ..."Hi stacia,
I just started reading Outlander (2nd time around) and could not figure out who the gentleman ghost was that was looking at Claire through the window. I thought it might have been Jamie but then thought it might have been the guy who traveled through the stones in the later book. I don't want to spoil it for any one who hasn't read it...so all I will say is he wasn't related to Claire. Thank you so much it was bugging me!
I'm new at this so I don't know if I am doing this right! Hope so! I have a few things that confuse me also..... In Outlander what on Earth does Claire mean when she tells Jamie to make love like a hedgehog very carefully? Then they laugh? I have googled this and tried so hard to figure it out! :) Also, given Jamie's character and they way he is with Claire (and the way he reacted when she disobeyed his orders while he met w Horrocks) why doesn't he ask her why she went to Geillis' house while he was hunting w/ Dougal and the Duke? Since he had to save her, again, after she did something he asked her not to do...knowing how Jamie is, I can't believe he didn't ask her?
The first question is easy. Hedgehogs are spiney like porcupines. Would tend to be painful if making love to wrongly. The second question I pondered myself for along time untill a few books later. If Jamie knew why or who sent Claire to Geillis' house, it would have messed up a future story line in a later book. If I was sure you had finished all books, I would explain better.
Thank you! And yes, I see what you mean about the future story line. I have read all the books- Outlander 4x and the others twice...I'm a bit obsessed lol! I guess I didn't think about how her explaination would have made the later situation hard, but it does make sense now.
I think that part of him not getting after her about having gone to Geillis' house is that she revealed who she really is and that took precedence over him getting mad at her ;) I think that it was such a whirlwind, they didn't have a down moment between him rescuing her and then her explaining her situation to him. That would be a lot to take in!
I am re-reading the series and I have gotten about 1/2 way through voyager... In the beginning of Outlander, what is up with Frank seeing the Scottish ghost? I think he mentioned it had a brooch with a deer on it. When Claire was in the past she mentioned several brooches with stags, but nothing that sounded similar to the one Frank described. in the first 7 books, have we figured out who the "ghost" was? Has Diana mentioned it anywhere. This is just one of those things that really bugs me.
Amanda wrote: "I am re-reading the series and I have gotten about 1/2 way through voyager... In the beginning of Outlander, what is up with Frank seeing the Scottish ghost? I think it has something to do with his dreams. I mean, how else could he know what a telephone looks like, etc? Now how that all fits together? I have no idea. I just wish Diana would hurry and finish writing so I can find out!
Ashley wrote: "Amanda wrote: "I am re-reading the series and I have gotten about 1/2 way through voyager... In the beginning of Outlander, what is up with Frank seeing the Scottish ghost? I guess it will be worth the wait!
Ashley wrote: "Amanda wrote: "I am re-reading the series and I have gotten about 1/2 way through voyager... In the beginning of Outlander, what is up with Frank seeing the Scottish ghost? One other thing that is bothering me too, is the gravestone of Jamie's that Claire found in the future. I keep wondering about the dates and if they purposely left them off so they wouldn't know. Hmmmm.
Pinda wrote: "Ashley wrote: "Amanda wrote: "I am re-reading the series and I have gotten about 1/2 way through voyager... Lindsay wrote: "I'm new at this so I don't know if I am doing this right! Hope so! I have a few things that confuse me also..... In Outlander what on Earth does Claire mean when she tells Jamie to make love like..."
Again back to this hedgehog scene. There is a reference to it in another thread, but can't find it now, sorry. And there someone is wondering about Claire thinking (page 329, mass market Voyager): "So now we know just how old that one is!" DG refers to an old, old joke that goes: How does a hedgehog make love? - exactly what Jamie asks Claire two lines above - with the answer: carefully, very carefully!
Wan wrote: "Eva wrote: "Theresa wrote: "One thing that bothered me was in Drums of Autumn, they kept emphasizing how Bree and Roger needed to think about the person they were trying to reach in order to get to..."Wan/Eva,
I actually did think of this and posted it in another thread but did not get to much feed back. I placed a lot on this theory. So I was thinking.... Please share your thoughts....
Roger and William B. went to teleport after Jem. (book 7) They had to be thinking of him because they went to save Jem but Jem never went. Brianna is with Mandy in a bad situation. Do you think Roger will show up in book 8 to save her??? I want to say so bad that Roger never made it to the past. Again, Roger was thinking of Jem, wouldn't that allow him to time travel to Jem's time period. Nowhere?
Sorry for being so vague, I am trying not to use to much detail so it doesn't spoil for those who haven't read.
So many times it has come up how thinking of the person you love brings you to their time period.
Claire to Jack Radall, the first time. She was think of Frank once she was sucked into the port. Remember it was the time of year when the port was open so it pulled her in instead of her choosing. It brought her to a Randall.
Gellis wondering how she made it so many times without blood, stones, etc... Jamie was Claire's number one and she went right to him.
Roger thought of his father when trying to get Brianna the first time and didn't make it. His father is dead. Not until the second time when he felt so desperate to get to Brianna.
William didn't make it because he was not thinking of his wife. Brianna got that out of him in the kitchen.
Brianna went first returning because her love for her daughter health was the strongest, then Roger and Jem followed her.
Diana is playing the law of attraction within the time traveling element.
hmmm....?
Totally - Law of attraction (or motivation).I think Roger will be back to save Bree and Mandy.
I don't think we know for sure, yet, about William B. There are still 2 possibilities --he had died during the travel (as Bree suspected) or would be back in the future? Either way, it'd yield the same result as far as the MacKenzie's family tree goes.
From the excerpt of Jem's bit (don't remember the #) -the poor baby did sense the portal in the tunnel but we will have to see what he would do and if he actully go thru it -- WHEN he would end up. It could be nowhere at all just like when Bree did. May be Roger'd end up in the tunnel with Jem??? Can two portals be connected?
As for Geillis, she was a die-hard "Jacobite" may be that's what pulled her to that time period. She was married so may be the ring protected her.
This is so much fun. I love discussion like this. It makes you think.
What about Mr. Willowby? The Chinese friend of Jamie during Voyager? Do we ever hear what happened to him?Just curious....he left home and was never heard from again...
I'm not missing or ignoring anyone, just trying not to read too many of these posts because I haven't read Echo yet, and don't wanna read any major spoilers...: ^ )

I haven't read Echo yet either. DG books usually take up so much of my time, so I wanted get some other books read before I started Echo. Plus, I want to stretch it out for a little while, because I know it will be at at least a couple of years before the next books is released.
Cindy- I forgot all about Mr. Willowby!! I wonder if he will reappear anywhere. Hmm.
One thing that has bothered me for a while from Outlander was at the end of the book and Jamie and Claire are looking up at the full moon and the book says it is a Christmas moon but we know that Jamie was set to be executed on Dec. 23rd and was rescued the night before his execution. You can tell a lot of time has passed between his rescue and trip to France and his recovery but surely not a year and when in the heck did Claire get pregnant during that time I know they didn't have sex when he was so injured. Just wondering if anyone has figured this out.
Sarah wrote: "One thing that has bothered me for a while from Outlander was at the end of the book and Jamie and Claire are looking up at the full moon and the book says it is a Christmas moon but we know that J..."Doesn't Claire, in the monastery conjure some kind of "spell" to help Jamie get over his torture by Jack Randall which eventually leads to their first pregnancy?

Brianna's bracelet: "I love you a little... a lot... passionately... not at all". What does this mean? I could understand it with something in relation to Roger saying... I will love and have all of you... or not at all. But where does the... "I love you a little" come in?
In Echo, when Jamie and Claire are in the garden (sigh)... she wants to know what he's thinking. He whispers it in her ear... and she immediately replies... "I take it back. I don't want to know what your thinking." What was he saying to her? It's driving me crazy. I can only assume it was something embarassingly erotic, or something like that. But still I wanna know.
Then, in the first book when Jamie was first telling Claire he loved her... he says "what does it matter if she has a face like a sheep." He doesn't really think that, right? He was just saying that he loved her before he saw her, right?
I dunno... these are all I can think of for now, but I'm sure a lot more will come to mind.
