SOLVED!: frozen wolf howls thaw in spring [s]

I used to read this book to my kids about a rural family in America and told from the fathers point of view. He repeatedly refers to the children as "my little lambs" and the book incluedes the puzzling and scary sound of wolfs howling when none around until they decide it was just frozen howls from last winter thawing in spring and the neighbors razorback hogs destroying his garden.

Anyone know this book ? Thanks for any help
