What are you reading?
Rachel, I read Running Around (And Such) a while ago it it reminded me also of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books.I also like your "happy book" rule before getting married!!! :)
I just started the book "Missing" by Shelley Shephard Gray. I'm only on chapter two but it looks like a winner!

Glad we agree - on both fronts! :) I'm nearly finished Running Around (And Such) and I think I would have really appreciated it as an Amish version of the Little House books when I was a young teenager. Lizzie can be a bit whiny in places, but it's a fun book.
I've started listening to A Simple Winter by Rosalind Lauer on auidobook. I know it's not winter (although some days the Scottish weather would suggest otherwise) but the storyline intrigued me.
I just finished Amy Clipston's series Amish Bakery Series which has 5 main books and 2 side books and I really enjoy her storyline and how it flowed. I love how in the beginning of the books she would include a translation for people who are not familiar with the Amish terms and also included Amish recipes in between several chapters. She is a favorite author however she has a limited selection on books. Just started a new book by Beth Wiseman "An Amish Love" I am bored with it unfortunately.
I like reading books by several authors & I've just started "Plain Perfect" by Beth Wiseman. (book 1 in a series of 3) This is the first of her books for me.

I also enjoyed the last story, I don't remember the author, about the older Amish couple dealing with empty nest syndrome. It was a different aspect of Amish fiction that has not been explored much.
I just finished reading another great story from Marta Perry, i.e. Danger in Plain Sight. This is book #3 in Perry's Amish suspense series. The first two are Murder in Plain Sight and Vanish in Plain Sight. This is a great series. I highly recommend it!!
I'm reading The Survivor: Families of Honor, Book Three. I never got approved to review it so I just bought it in DEC and finally am getting around to reading it. My problem with it is that about every 6 pages or so on the Kindle edition it is missing the top two lines of the page. I can usually figure it out but it sure is frustrating!

Maybe you should contact amazon about it. I don't think you should have to guess at what going on if you paid for a whole book.

I still have half of Ella Finds Love Again to finish but I started Redemption while I was on vacation. I am so loving it! It will be hard to read other books knowing that I have the rest of the series waiting to be read! :)
I love the Redemption series... it's a great story of the power of family. Since there are so many books in the series it's just more to savor :)
I have just finished reading a delightful book by Laura Bradford, entitled Hearse and Buggy. I suppose it falls into the category of a "cozy" mystery. Anyway, it is a great story. I think you will enjoy it. The second book in this series, Assaulted Pretzel, is scheduled for release on March 5, 2013. I am looking forward to reading it.
I have Finished Amy Clipston books execpt for A Season for Love, though I have Read Almost all of Shelley Shepard Gray Series (Just one more series) other then the ones she working on. Though I have read all of Wanda E. Bruestter (SP?).At the Moment I am on the Book Called "The Bridesmaid" By Beverley Lewis

Karen wrote: "House Calls and Hitching Posts by Dr. Elton Lehman as told to Dorcas sharp Hoover..."I borrowed that from my mother a year or two ago. I found that the stories are very interesting and insightful to the care of the Amish people.
I'm currently reading Waiting for Summer's Return by Kim Vogel Sawyer and listening to Summer Island by Kristin Hannah. Guess I've got summer on my mind right now?
Rachel wrote: "I'm currently reading Waiting for Summer's Return by Kim Vogel Sawyer and listening to Summer Island by Kristin Hannah. Yep, we turned on our router this morning and it was up and running earlier than we expected! Amusingly, we got a text from our phone company a little later saying that our broadband would be activated on the 11th? Not sure what happened, but our internet is working now, which makes returning to university next week a lot easier, especially as we're living so far from town now :)
Hey everyone! I just finished reading Marta Perry's "Murder in Plain Sight." While I really like her writing style & overall liked this book, I have to say I was very disappointed with the ending - felt some important things weren't explained. Anyone else read this book & have any thoughts?
I am reading another of Cindy Woodsmall's books about Rhoda and her garden in "A Season for Tending" first book in series Amish Vines and Orchards.
I have just finished reading Finding Mercy by Karen Harper. I really enjoyed it. It is the third book in the Home Valley series. There will be a fourth book in this series, entitled "Upon a Winter's Night," that will be released in the fall of 2013. It will be a Christmas romantic suspense novel.
I have just finished reading Shunning Sarah by Julie Kramer. This book is not quite what I expected. The primary focus is on a TV news reporter who is investigating the suspicious death of a young Amish woman, Sarah Yoder. It is a good story; I enjoyed it, although I was deeply disturbed by the reason for Sarah's shunning. I would love to hear what anyone else thought of the book. It has received excellent reviews.

I read it a while back, Carolyn. Being a fan of mystery novels, I really enjoyed the way the book was written, with the main character, Riley, an outsider to the Amish community. Like you, I thought the reasons behind Sarah's shunning was pretty disturbing. Unfortunately, things like that happen in all sorts of communities. I thought that Julie Kramer took quite a risk for writing about such a thing in the highly religious community of the Amish. This, I think, really helped to make her book one of a kind. Not many authors want to tackle such a weighty subject.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher, so I wrote a review if it, if you want to read more.
I'm glad you like it. If you haven't, you might like to read her other books in the series. I read Shunning Sarah first, then went to the others and really liked them.

Brittany: I think I will try to read Julie Kramer's other books. You are right about Kramer tackling such a subject, although I have read one other Amish story that addressed that subject. Unfortunately, I don't remember which book it was. Certainly, Shunning Sarah is one of a kind--something a little different.
Brittany and Caroline....I'm the author of SHUNNING SARAH...thanks for reading it. I don't want to post any spoilers, but know that it was a very tricky book for me to write and rewrite. I used to be a journalist and do extensive research to try to break new ground in all of my books. I realized, as I wrote Shunning Sarah, that it was provocative. I appreciate that you recognized this. I grew up fourth generation on a family farm that we've worked for more than a 135 years. My father was friends with area Amish and I think he would have been pleased that I told this story. I've had some interesting discussions with book clubs about the choices I made in the story-telling. If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to answer them.
I'm reading the Kauffman Bakery Series by Amy Clipston which has been fantastic and they are on sale right now for Kindle for $3.99.

I just finished Faithful to Laura by Kathleen Fuller and will start Soul's Gate by James Rubart.Faithful to Laura was an Amish story. I have a summary in my bookshelf.
Soul's Gate isn't out yet. I got it through Book Sneeze.
I read his book Rooms which was fantastic. I also just learned that it was book one of a Trilogy. Will have to look for the other two.
I have just finished reading The Silent Order by Melanie Dobson. What a great story!! I really enjoyed it. It is a little reminiscent of the movie "Witness" (still my favorite movie). The story takes place during the prohibition era in Cleveland and Sugarcreek, Ohio. I think you will enjoy it if you haven't already read it.
Life with Lilyas soon as I finish reading and get my book review up I also have bookmarks and postcards to give away from this book!
A Voice in the Wind I have read it before and thought I'd read it again while waiting for my books to get to the library...it's as great as the last time I read it!!!
Just finshied Faithful to Laura and started A Promise for Miriam - I am stuck on this one though. had to put it down for a little bit and try something else before finishing it. So picked up a non amish for a change.
I just finished reading Beyond the Storm by Carolyn Zane! It's the first in the Quilts of Love series from Abingdon Press. Has anyone else read it? I really enjoyed it -- I laughed, got angry, cried, and cried a little more.
If you aren't familiar with the series, 16 books by 16 different authors, including Barbara Cameron & Vannetta Chapman, come out one a month through early 2014.

I'm about halfway through Running Around (And Such) by Linda Byler, which is totally different from any Amish book I've read before but it reminds me a lot of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books. It's a nice, easy read, even if I do get frustrated with the characters at times. It fulfils my "Only read happy books until the wedding" rule :)
