SOLVED. Roman soldier who rolled dice for Jesus' clothes is punished with immortality [s]

This Roman soldier cannot die, and goes through time living as a soldier, fighting in different wars. This is a series of books, I read one in the late 1980's. That book had the Roman soldier fighting for the Nazis in WWII. At the end of the war, he flees and joins the French Foreign Legion, where he ends up in French Indochina fighting at the battle of Dien Bien Phu.

Wow the series is still going since 1979 though with a different author now. The most recent book was released this month.
