AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments A bit of fun.

http://raelori.blogspot.com/p/2010-sf...

I signed up to read 25 and am on #16.

message 2: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. We should do this in this group. Maybe from now until the end of the year.

message 3: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Green (laurieagreen) | 146 comments Love that idea, Carolyn.

message 4: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments I just signed up for this challenge. Looking forward to a bunch of new SFR reads.

message 5: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 67 comments I'm game! Glad to see so many folks on board. :-)

I have a bit of a ways to go but I got my pile ready to dive in!

message 6: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments I have 23 of 25. Would commit to 50, but I have a BAB to write. (grin)

message 7: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments Okay, I've already got 10 SFR books under my belt this year. I'm planning on buying something for my sony reader. What's the very best, only available for ebook, title I could get. It needs to be long enough to justify my dollars and has to be available in a format I can use. So no Kindle only books.

I posted about some of the SFR books I've read recently and in the past at by blog at
http://lonejackfiber.wordpress.com/

message 8: by Pauline (new)

Pauline (paulinebairdjones) | 345 comments There are lots of multi format (so available for Sony) titles at fictionwise.com. Also Carina Press has some SFR, ebook only titles you can read on a Sony. It took me a minute to pull up the title I bought: In Enemy Hands by KS Augustin.

message 9: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Heard a lot about that title. Maybe you should get that one, Jacqueline!

message 10: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) | 67 comments I second that! I'm reading that one now, it's pretty cool so far. Really great characterization and developing romance mixed with awesome SF world building.

message 11: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments Okay, I think I'll try that one.
Thanks everyone.

message 12: by Chaeya (new)

Chaeya | 31 comments I would love to get in on the reading challenge, but things are too stressy right now with finishing my own book, in the studio and got a bunch of faires coming up.

message 13: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. This is a great idea as a challenge. I've just signed up!!!

message 14: by Jadetyger (new)

Jadetyger Sevea | 56 comments Hello, there. I just wanted to pop in here and say that I am also doing the challenge over at my Goodreads page. Only a couple of reviews so far, but I'm working on catching up. :)

Cheers!

message 15: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments I've just joined up. Hey better late than never!

message 16: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments @Mandy,

The good thing is you can grandfather all the sfr books you've already read this year. I just checked the "Best SFR books" list here on Goodreads and found some books I didn't know were sfr. LOL.

message 17: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda | 86 comments Going to look now... Thanks Anna C :)

message 18: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments You're welcome, Mandy. I have to go back and add more to my wishlist. LOL.

message 19: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments Just read my 14th SFR book of the year. Review is in my sci fi romance list. Beloved Enemy by Janet Miller

message 20: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Well, I finished my first one. The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee . Absolutely fantastic book. First time I've read this author.

message 21: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Cool, Carolyn! How's the romance in that one? :)

message 22: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Even though the heroine Jane is young (16), there are sex scenes as at that time people are having sex fairly young (like it's any different now - I was around the same age myself - don't tell my mom). You kind of forget about the age thing later in the book. It's a real tearjerker and very romantic.

message 23: by new_user (last edited Aug 16, 2010 12:18PM) (new)

new_user | 755 comments Oh, sounds great, Carolyn! Thanks! Btw, you might be happy to learn there's a sequel to that book. :D

message 24: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I'm reading it right now!

NebulousGloom (FK) (nebulousgloom) | 30 comments I've signed up to read a bunch (maybe 25 or 50). So far, I've read:
An Accidental Goddess by Linnea Sinclair
The Quantum Rose by Catherine Asaro
Naked In Death by J.D. Robb
Sweet Starfire by Jayne Ann Krentz
Moonstruck by Susan Grant
The Planet Savers by Marion Zimmer Bradley (didn't like)
Close Encounters by Katherine Allred
Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
Gabriel's Ghost by Linnea Sinclair
Agent of Change by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
Finders Keepers by Linnea Sinclair

The Drylands by Mary Rosenblum isn't considered SFR, I don't think, but it definitely has romantic elements and is a fantastic book.

message 26: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Just finished my book #2 Metallic Love (Silver Metal Lover 2) by Tanith Lee ****.

message 27: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Wow, you guys are on a roll! Keep it going!

message 28: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I've just finished book #3 of the challenge. He, She and It by Marge Piercy . Pretty good book - 3.5 stars.

message 29: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Since I just started a series, and agreed to read this bb's book here's my plan to finish my commitment to the Challenge:

Signed up to read 25 SFRs, have finished 19.

#20 Shades of Dark (currently reading)halfway done.
#21 Driven (currently reading for here)
#22 Hope's Folly
#23 Rebels and Lovers

24 and 25 are still up in the air. I don't know what I'll feel like reading by then. LOL. I expect those last two spots will be filled by BOM books from here. :-)

So that's four months to read six books, many of which are pretty long. I hope I can do it!

message 30: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I just finished my 5th book so Earth Read done!!!

--The Earth Reading Challenge – Read 5 SFR novels.
The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee *****
Metallic Love by Tanith Lee ****
He, She and It by Marge Piercy *** 1/2
The Time Weaver by Shana Abé ****
Relentless by Lauren Dane ****

message 31: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Good job, guys! Hope that was good reading!

message 32: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Just finished Shades of Dark. I must say the ending was a twist I didn't expect, though in hindsight, as a writer, I can see how she set it up. Well done, Linnea! Loved it!

NebulousGloom (FK) (nebulousgloom) | 30 comments I tried The Silver Metal Lover by Tanith Lee, but the female lead was just too damn young for me. I have trouble sometimes when the chick is supposed to be a naive 20-something. Teens was too much. Give me a 35-year-old heroine any day.

message 34: by Erica (new)

Erica Anderson (ericaanderson) | 6 comments Just finished Metal Reign by Nathalie Grey--a M/F SFR novella--(recently discussed at The Galaxy Express) and posted my review for the SFR challenge.

message 35: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Felicia, I get tired of the naivete too since I can't in the least relate, LOL.

message 36: by AnnaM (last edited Sep 10, 2010 11:48AM) (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments I can't relate anymore. LOL. I do have some heroines in my wips who are in their late 20's and not naive. In my WIPS, I mean. But many of mine are older.

message 37: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I finished #6, Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre , which was wonderful. I'm plan on reading the rest of the series.

message 38: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Sounds good, Anna. Carolyn, I loved the first book. I wasn't too hot on the next ones.

message 39: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments Just finished In Enemy Hands by KS Augustin. Thanks Pauline for the recommend. Really liked it. Don't know what number I'm on. 16 or so? I better count.

message 40: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Glad to hear that's good. I plan to read it. :D

message 41: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments Just finished Close Contact (Alien Affairs, #2) by Katherine Allred . I really liked this one. There wasn't so much female shamanish stuff as in the last one which spoiled that one a bit for me. This one was entertaining. I enjoyed it greatly as I went along. There wasn't quite as much romance perhaps as the last one. The H and h were not actually together for a large part of the book. I nearly always enjoy books better if the H/h are together struggling against an outside force either literally or figuratively. Here they were sort of working separatly. Still a good read and a recommend if you need another for the challenge. That makes 18 for me.

message 42: by Jacqueline J (new)

Jacqueline J | 154 comments I also recently finished Rapier by Candy Dance which I would not in fact recommend. But it is inexpensive if you need a quick read.

message 43: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments Oh, that's too bad, Jacqueline. One you liked and one you didn't, that's not a bad turnout though. :)

message 44: by Frances (new)

Frances (mothindarkness) You guys put me to shame! I thought I was doing well at:

Grimspace
Nexus Pointe
Unchained
Unleashed
Unearthed
Unraveled

So, at six, Im guessing Im in the minors. lol

How long do they have to be? Ive devoured a few short SFR ebooks as well. But were talking really short.

message 45: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments I don't think there's a page limit. Personally the shortest "novel" I've read for the challenge is the one I'm reading now that my Sony says is 177 pages. The rest were all 250 pgs and up.

I'm on number, I think, 22 now. Only 3 more books to read this year and then I may take a break and read some straight SF or tv tie-ins.

I haven't heard of Nexus Pointe. Was it good? Is it an ebook?

message 46: by Frances (new)

Frances (mothindarkness) It's in print and ebook, and Jaleta is going to kill me, cause I misspelled it. :-S
It's Nexus Point, no "e" and it's fantastic.
The author (also fantastic) is Jaleta Clegg.

The story is more romantic sci-fi than SFR, but it is one edge-of-your-seat fun read.

message 47: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Thanks, Frances. I've heard of the author and can't remember but may be on a list or two with her. I'll look the book up.

message 48: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments HI! So, my previous list of what I thought I'd read has gone by the wayside.

My #22 was Kiana: The Rea Cheveyo Chronicles.

I posted a short review here: http://sciencefictionwithlove.blogspo...

I don't know which story I'll pick next but since all of the novels in all of the SFR series I've read this year are really long, and the fact my life for the rest of the year is a carnival ride that's just begun to spin (and will turn everything into a blur soon) I think I'll pick three short ebooks to finish my committment.

Keep in mind that other than genre I know nothing about any of these stories. Some possible titles are:

Auch das Schone
Belle Starr
Braking Chance
For Love of Kumiko
The Key (Hi, Pauline!)
Killing Silk (sfr??)
The Lancaster Rule (sfr??)
Master of Fate
Nebula's Music
Old Man's War
Solar Wind (sfr??)

I'll probably try to look up all the blurbs and read three soon and the others as time permits.

Happy Reading, everyone!

message 49: by new_user (new)

new_user | 755 comments You have some interesting ones there, Anna! I don't think I've read any of 'em! LOL.

message 50: by AnnaM (new)

AnnaM (annamc) | 1111 comments Keep in mind I'm not sure if some are actually SFR, but I believe most were advertised that way. I'd look them up to be sure you want to buy them. :-)

Oh, and Braking Chance is supposed to be BREAKING Chance!
