SOLVED. SF About Colonising a planet [s]

The people are atacked by a creature (I think 'Dragon' is in the title). This creature changes form as it goes through its life cycle. Though incredible it is based upon the life cycle of a South American frog. Published at least 20 years ago. There were 2 books to the series. Believed the planet was called 'helicon' or similar sounding. Any suggestions

It's "The Legacy of Heorot" by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Stephen Barnes. I just discovered it this spring. Great read.

The sequel is called "Beowulf's Children". Haven't read that one yet.

Thanks Lisa, Yes it it definitely the right book. Will move it to the 'solved' folder ASAP. New to this site so have to find my way around it. regards BW
